Congratulations also goes to Jemma Joyce, Jordan Thorne and Takoda Pemberton who were performing in the HATCHLINGS Enrichment Big Band and Jemma Joyce who also performed in Dance Elite Enrichment Dance Company. These groups are made up of students in all of the schools in the Hastings Valley Community of Schools.

This was a prestigious ceremony including students from all 8 schools in our Community of Schools.

P&C IS A GREAT GROUP OF PARENTS

Please remember to have your say and become involved in your child’s School P&C Association. The next warm and friendly meeting is Tuesday 8 August, 7.00pm in the Library. We would love to see more parents involved. It’s a really nice bunch of parents!!!

BAND CAMP

A large number of our Lake Cathie Public School band students joined me at the annual Community of Schools Band Camp at the Francis Retreat, Bonny Hills. We joined students from Kendall, Laurieton, North Haven, Moorland Public Schools and also some great kids from Camden Haven High School. Mrs Skerritt, Mrs Bruggeman and Mrs Menzies from North Haven, along with Mr Richardson, music teacher from Camden Haven High School and a large number of volunteers, joined Mrs Irving and myself for three great days at band camp. The kids were fantastic and the final band camp concert was brilliant. There were great meals, games nights, developing friendships and a good deal of fun and we encourage more of our band members to join us next year.

DIABETES TRAINING

Staff have recently undertaken another professional learning session to support students with Type 1 Diabetes in our school. Thanks to our Local Area Health Team and Vicki Barber for helping to provide us with current information to assist us with daily routine support for our students.

BUS SAFETY MESSAGE

Busways, in partnership with the Department of Transport and Schools across the state, have for a number of years maintained a policy of “Bags on the Front” when getting on and off the school buses. This is in relation to student injuries sustained when boarding the bus where a bag may contain sharp objects at eye level for the student lining up and boarding behind. When getting off the bus, bags on the front makes sure a child’s bag is not caught in the door as it closes as happened to a primary aged student unbeknown to the driver. We are in the process of arranging our annual bus safety talk with Busways where this issue will be reinforced. When children are safely off the bus, it is highly appropriate for the bag to return to the correct position on their back.

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA

As mentioned in previous newsletters, students with a confirmed disability, physically or mentally, are required to be identified on a National data collection register called the NCCD. Details of personal information are held confidentially in line with national privacy regulations and are used to assist Government initiatives and support mechanisms for students with a disability. Collection of this data is finalised this Friday 5 August. This process is conducted by the Principal, counsellor,

WELLBEING FRAMEWORK - LAKE CATHIE PUBLIC SCHOOL

CHILD PROTECTION MODULES - TERM 3

As part of our School’s planning and commitment to the Wellbeing Framework, physical, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing are being addressed through a variety of targeted programs. During Term 3 all students K-6 will participate in a regular series of lessons relating to the Department of Education’s Child Protection policies and lesson material. Content is very appropriate for each age group and staff will work carefully to ensure topics are followed sensitively and comfortably. As part of this process, the Bravehearts organisation will provide free the Ditto Show as outlined below.

FREE BRAVEHEARTS KEEP SAFE SHOW

Show supported this year by the local Braveheart Committee as a free educational experience. Last year students were asked to pay for this show. Thanks to our local Bravehearts volunteers.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in ‘Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show’.

The purpose of ‘Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show’ is to teach children personal safety in a non-confrontational, fun and engaging fashion. Bravehearts’ Education Teams deliver the shows messages into schools, day care centres, shopping centres, sporting clubs and other facilities (relating to the care of children) to provide students, parents, teachers, carers and the general community with specialised child sexual assault awareness and education.

The shows main contents address:

• Yes and No feelings

• Warning Signs

• Scared and Yucky Feelings

• Private Parts and Privacy

• It’s OK to say NO if you don’t feel safe

• What to do if you feel unsafe or unsure

In addition to the performance and to continue communicating Ditto’s personal safety messages, the team also provides an Activity Book for each student to take home and share with parents and carers.

UNIFORM PRICE LIST

As indicated by the P&C in previous newsletters, supplier costs have meant that the Uniform Shop has increased, carefully, the prices on a number of our uniform items. We are committed to having a great uniform that allows students to look great and feel comfortable whilst being visibly accountable and safe during school time and whilst on excursions or performances. An updated price list is attached.

BBQ FOR THE NEEDY

A new initiative, supported by the Laurieton United Services Club and the Hastings Council, is a Friday afternoon “BBQ for the Needy”. The initiative is designed to support those in our community who just need a little support including a place to meet and chat. The BBQ will be located behind the LUSC on Fridays from 3.00pm. How can you assist? 1. Make a donation of BBQ food on the afternoon. 2. Attend the BBQ to encourage and support those in need within our community. If you can help, please contact Graham Lee on 0413480999.

DONOR WEEK

Donatelife week starts today.

Did you know:-

One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people.

Around 1,500 people are on Australian organ transplant waiting lists at any time.

Our Little Mate will come home and back to see his friends at Lake Cathie School because of someone’s decision to be a donor.

If you’re not a donor, please think about it this week. Use the following link. It’s easy. Thank you!

SCIENCE FAIR - NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

As our schools are committed to STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) to enrich the learning, social and future learning opportunities for our students, our senior students will join other primary students from local schools at Panthers Port Macquarie for the 2016 Science Fair. Students from Camden Haven High School, Hastings Secondary College and Wauchope High School will display and demonstrate Science Projects to foster an interest in Science. The Science Fair is on Monday 15 August and transportation is free on buses provided by the local Public High Schools. This is a great initiative and one we hope students in lower grades will have the opportunity to be involved with in the coming years.

BOOK WEEK - COMING SOON

We will have our Book Week Character Day on Thursday 25 August where all students, staff and parents can dress up as a book character to celebrate our love of books and literature. This is advanced warning to get your costume ideas going.

Band Member Info

TERM 3 WEEK 2

ASSEMBLY AWARD WINNERS

Page 6: Education Week Open Day - Friday 5 August 2016...1.45pm Students resume normal class activities 8.30am – 3.00pm BOOK FAIR in Library. Purchase some great books for your children

We have just under one week until our first P&C meeting of the term, on Tuesday 9th August at 7pm. We would very much like to see some new faces. Come and find out more about the P&C and the role it plays within our school, and have a say in where fundraising funds get spent.

Fundraising – Gazebo purchaseAny day now our first major purchase to benefit the school will be delivered. Our ironman fundraising (and a little bit more) has purchased 3 sturdy gazebos/sun shelters. We have 1 sized 6 metres by 3 metres and 2 sized 3.5 metres x 4 metres. The largest has the school logo on it’s roof and the smaller two have ‘Lake Cathie Public School’ around the valances. A great branding opportunity wherever we go, and we can’t lose them either! Well done to all involved in the fundraising and the decision making.

Fundraising – School DiscoWhat a fantastic turn-out for a great cause. We added in the teachers’ contributions and will be writing a cheque for $1200! It was great to see so many children attend the disco and the fun factor was obvious. Thank you again to all the volunteers and teachers who made it such a success, especially Mrs McCleary.

Fundraising – Election DayOn the 2nd July we opened up the canteen at 7.30am and got the urns switched on for a big day. We kept the Lake Cathie Bonny Hills Lions Club well watered and they tempted our wallets with bacon and egg, sausage, and steak sandwiches. We raised $256 in sales of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, snacks and cold drinks. The Lions made nearly $1400 from their BBQ, which we handed over at about 5pm. It was a great day and a great joint effort with ourselves and the local Lions. They support us and it

was our chance to share the opportunity. A big thank you to the executive committee and volunteers for covering the canteen for the day.

Father’s Day Stall – 30th & 31st AugustOur fundraiser Father’s Day Stall will be held on Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st August. There will be a wide variety of gifts available including surf wax made locally at Crescent Head.

All gifts are $5. We have stock available for multiple purchases, however these will be limited to 2 items on the first day, additional items can be purchased on the 31st. Don’t forget your money kids!

CanteenWith the last school newsletter we sent home a roster for Term 3, hoping to attract some more volunteers. Unfortunately our call for help has gone unanswered. The same 6 volunteers are doing their best to cover the 30 shifts for the term. Simple maths, if we had 30 volunteers, that would be one session a term each. Even if you only have a spare hour, we would like to hear from you. Please contact Kylie Whiting in the canteen or myself as soon as possible. Your children will love seeing you behind the counter, believe me!

Uniform Please note new uniform prices are now in place. Uniform forms are available from the office.

Thanks for reading. Claire Briggs email: [email protected]
