RAISES OVER $1 MILLION

AFTER FIRST ROUND

“They have a great idea and are coming at it in a thoughtful way”

- Former CEO of ACT Richard Ferguson

Iowa City, IA - Higher Learn-ing Technologies, a startup in Io-wa’s Creative Corridor, is pleased to announce that they have com-pleted their first round of invest-ment at just over one million dol-lars. They are the creators of four top 50 grossing educational appli-cations on iOS and Android, with one of those reaching as high as number four.

What makes their product revolu-tionary is that it’s able to custom-ize to the learning abilities of each specific user.

The round includes a vari-ety of prestigious names from the business world. HLT’s investor list includes names like Dr. Richard Ferguson (former CEO of ACT), Joseph Whitters (Operating Part-ner at Frazier Health Care), Adam Ingersoll (Co-Founder & Princi-pal, Compass Education Group), Josh Cramer (CEO of Cramer Dev.), Ravi Patel (President of Hawkeye Hotels), and Bruce Leh-rman (Founder and CEO of Invol-ta).

The company, which was named by INC magazine as a startup to watch in the Midwest, creates mobile test prep applica-tions that transforms bulky text-books and flashcards into an app that users can access through their tablet or smartphone.

Currently the team has four applications available to users: Dental Boards Mastery: NBDE 1, Dental Boards Mastery: NBDE 2, NCLEX RN Mastery and NCLEX PN Mastery. The dental apps are priced at $49.99 and the nursing apps are priced at $24.99.

In the past year, the company has had over 250,000 downloads in 160 plus countries. The group plans to use the funds raised to improve their products and ex-pand into 24 other fields by the end of 2014.

The group has also added a silicon valley fixture, Murray In-dick (Senior Counsel at Crowell Moring) to the team to serve as the company’s legal counsel and as a member on their Advisory Board.

“It’s definitely been the ride of our lives so far and we know we are only part way through it”

In Late 2012, while Alec Whitters was studying at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry for his upcoming dental exams, after being buried in note cards and textbooks, the light bulb mo-ment happened. Frustrated, Alec knew there had to be a more efficient way to study. He had tried to find a way to use his new iPad/iPhone but couldn’t find any good solutions. “I reached out to publishing companies about creating an app, which they promptly dismissed as being a dumb idea,” said Alec. Whitters then enlisted two of his best childhood friends to help him. Adam Keune, a business major, and Ben O’Connor, a doctoral student, began helping Whitters develop the dental app. Alec and Ben dropped out of school and Adam left his full time job. With some help from University of Iowa dental students and professors, Higher Learning Technologies created their first app. Since, they have added 10 more members to the HLT family.

From the beginning, the company’s beliefs have stayed the same. “HLT is constantly searching for a better way of doing things by challenging assumptions, thinking outside the box and testing new ideas. We are not satisfied with the way things have always been done,” said Alec Whitters CEO. The vision HLT wants, is to transform the lives of students by giving them the knowledge and confidence they need to turn their dreams into reality. Adam Keune, CMO at Higher Learning Technologies, says “The best part of our day is getting calls and emails from students telling us how our

apps have transformed their lives.” Since announcing their over one million dollar round of investment in Febuary, the group is traveling to Silicon Valley and meeting with sever-al highly regarded members of the technology and business community. In just the past three months the company has seen over 300% growth in sales and for 2014 is on pace to surpass one million users worldwide.
