Quip: Delivered by Florence Thibodeau (Obtained from Joe Giannetti)

Why are the people of Oklahoma called “Sooners”? In the 1800s, when the American West was first opened, the early pioneers were offered free land east of the Rockies, but to ensure fairness, they could only stake out 40 acres after a race to the region on a specific date and time. Those heading for Oklahoma who jumped the gun and settled on the best land before the official start of the race were cheating and were called “Sooners” because they arrived “sooner” than those who obeyed the law. Why do we say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”? If you wish to gain esteem and avoid grief, then it’s wise to respect the customs of the majority within any culture you may find yourself. When St. Ambrose was sent on a mission to Rome by St. Augustine, he was concerned about which holy day to observe since the Romans fasted on a different day than was his custom. St. Augustine’s wise advice is still with us: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”

50/50 Raffle: Won by Julia Kane who donated the proceeds back to Kiwanis. Thank you Julia.

Happy Dollars: Ann Giannetti - $3 – Joe made it through surgery and is now walking and I can hang my nurse’s cap up and that’s a pleasure. I have one because I did

Not make Doreen’s induction and I felt bad because we don’t miss too many. You’re a very special person Doreen. And one for Bob because we did

Not make Bob’s last meeting. So we didn’t do well this September.

Bob Gollnick - $4 – Happy to be alive. I was in a bad car accident where both airbags went off. Me and my dog are ok. It wasn’t my fault and the

Other guy does not speak English. Another dollar is because Bob Meister’s daughter smashed up his truck. Tax season – people procrastinating

Done Monday, so I’m going to take some time off. Cow Plop – sell tickets. I sold my 40 tickets and looking to sell more. The signs are up – one has

Been stolen already in front of the hospital. I heard there has been chatter on Facebook. I need publicity.

Dave Elkin - $1 – So good to see John O’Brien here. You know he cut my grass and plowed my driveway in the last century.

Julia Kane - $1 – Glad to see everybody here and hope everyone stays well.

Kiwanis Club of Meriden | P.O. Box 733, Meriden, CT 06450 | www.meridenkiwanis.org

Ed Murphy - $1 – nice to see our new President.

Bob Meister - $2 – For Doreen – good luck and glad to have you here. The second is for my daughter. She was going to school and the brakes went

Out in Prospect. Going down a hill she didn’t want to drive head-on into traffic so she swerved off the road and swiped some trees and hit a big tree

She totaled the truck and is due to have surgery next week. It’s good to see Joe and looking good.

John O’Brien - $1 – Good to see all these old friends.

Elaine Murphy - $1 – Our first grandson had a wedding and it was beautiful

Sandy Gollnick - $5 – for everybody and especially for my husband just to think I could’ve lost them in the blink of an eye.

Doreen Roddy - $3 – I lived through my first board meeting. I planned and planned. I rearranged my kitchen and thought all was well until the

People arrived and everyone looked squished. My first luncheon meeting – I hope I make it through; and for John O’Brien approaching us to speak

To us. I’m very happy about that.

Service Leadership Programs: We need club advisors for Roger Sherman and Lincoln Middle School. We are working to establish new clubs at Thomas Hooker, Hanover and Nathan Hale. We will need advisors for those schools also. Washington Builders Club has worked on Super Hero Capes. We can donate these to the children’s Hospital as an indoor winter project. Lincoln Builders Club has worked on hospital dolls. They have cut out the fabric. Kiwanis members need to sew on labels and add stuffing to the dolls. This can be another indoor project. Brian Cofrancesco and Cathy Batista are working together to offer officer training for KKids and builders Club leaders. There will be installation of KKids and Builders Club Officers as well as training on October 24th at John Barry School from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This training will also be for advisors.

What’s Happening:

The Bike Ride in which many of our members participated had over 100 motorcycles on 10/1/2017 and raised over 4,700. What a great cause.

PROGRAM/GUEST SPEAKER:

John O’Brien is a Meriden native and former member of the Meriden Kiwanis club. He is an employee of the City of Meriden Highway Department

and has been with the city for 22 years. John is a representative of Legal Shield/IDShield which company deals with identity theft. There are many

facets to identity theft. There is financial, medical, Social Security theft, documents, insurance. 25% of all identity thefts are medical. He emphasized

that by law in Connecticut, we do not have to furnish our Social Security Number to medical personnel. If someone steals your medical information,

they could change your medications, blood type, allergies, etc. Your next medical emergency would result in disastrous medical situations. Your

character could be damaged immeasurably due to identity theft and very hard to convince people who you really are. Of course, financial identity

theft we are all very familiar with. John’s company offers security in knowing they will fight for you and restore your life if this occurs to you. John

presented a slide presentation and a short video. John’s talk was very informative and he was well received by all the members who knew him as a

former member of Kiwanis. Thank you John for your time.
