Putting into service (starting)

Reception checkImmediately upon receipt check the motor for externaldamage and if found, inform the forwarding agentwithout delay.

Check all rating plate data, especially voltage, windingconnection (star or delta), category, type of protectionand temperature marking.

Turn shaft by hand to check free rotation, removetransport locking if employed.

Motors equipped with roller bearings:Running the motor with no radial force applied to theshaft may damage the roller bearing.

Motors equipped with angular contact bearing:Running the motor with no axial force applied in theright direction to the shaft may damage the angularcontact bearing.

The type of bearing is specified on the rating plate.

Motors equipped with regreasing devices:When starting the motor for the first time, apply at leastthe specified quantity of grease until new grease isforced out from the grease outlet. For details see section Machines with relubricationsystem on page 8.

Insulation resistance checkMeasure insulation resistance before commissioningand when winding dampness is suspected.

WarningDisconnect and lock out before working on themotor or the driven equipment. Ensure no explo-sive atmosphere is present while executing insula-tion resistance check procedures.

Resistance, measured at 25°C, shall exceed the refer-ence value, i.e.

10 M ohm (measured with 500 V dc Megger)

WarningThe windings should be discharged immediatelyafter measurement to avoid risk of electric shock.

Insulation resistance reference value is halved for each20°C rise in ambient temperature.

If the reference resistance value is not attained, thewinding is too damp and must be oven dried. Oventemperature should be 90°C for 12-16 hours followed by105°C for 6-8 hours.

Drain hole plugs, if fitted, must be removed duringheating. After heating, make sure the plugs are refitted.

Windings drenched in seawater normally need to berewound.

Direct-on-line or star/delta startingThe terminal box on standard single speed motorsnormally contains six winding terminals and at least oneearth terminal.

For two-speed and special motors, the supply connec-tion must follow the instructions inside the terminal box.

Earthing must be carried out according to local regula-tions before the machine is connected to the supplyvoltage.

The voltage and connection are stamped on the ratingplate.

Direct-on-line starting (DOL):Y or ∆ winding connections may be used.E.g. 690 VY, 400 V∆ indicates Y-connection for 690Vand ∆ -connection for 400V.

Star/Delta starting (Y/D):The supply voltage must be equal to the rated voltageof the motor in ∆-connection.Remove all connection links from the terminal block.

For increased safety motors, only direct-on-line startingis normally allowed. If star-delta starting is required, please consult ABB Motors.

Other starting methods:If considering any other method for starting, e.g. softstarter, consult ABB Motors first.

Terminals and direction of rotationDirection of rotation is clockwise when viewing theshaft face at the motor drive end, and the line phasesequence L1, L2, L3 is connected to the terminals asshown in figure 1.

To alter the direction of rotation, interchange theconnection of any two line cables.

If the motor has a uni-directional fan, ensure that thedirection of rotation is according to the arrow markedon the motor.

Use

Operation

WarningDisconnect and lock out before working on themotor or the driven equipment. Ensure no explo-sive atmosphere is present while the work is inprogress.

The motors are designed for the following environ-mental conditions:Normal ambient temperature limits are -20°C to +40°C.Maximum altitude 1000m above sea level.

If these limits are exceeded, all electrical data must bechecked to equalise the surface temperature with thetemperature class according to Ignition temperature ofgases or dust. Please contact ABB Motors.

Particular attention must be paid to corrosive atmos-pheres when using flameproof motors; ensure that thepaint protection is suitable for the ambient conditionsas corrosion can damage the explosion-proof enclo-sure.

Page 16: EEx d, EEx de, EEX e, Ex nA, Ex N, EEx nA, DIP · ^eskimi i \lektrotehni^eskimi standartami, a takve soglasno sledu@]im ewropejskim normam: ... 1 Klass 2 ili EEx d, EEx de ,EEx e

Safety considerationsThe motor is intended for installation and use by quali-fied personnel, familiar with health and safety require-ments and national legislation.

Safety equipment necessary for the prevention ofaccidents at the installation and operating site must beprovided in accordance with local regulations.

WarningSmall motors with supply current directly switchedby thermally sensitive switches can start automati-cally.

Points to observe1. Do not use the motor to step on.2. The temperature of the outer casing of the motor

may be hot to the touch during normal operation.3. Some special motor applications require special

instructions (e.g. using frequency converter sup-plies).

4. Lifting lugs must only be used for lifting the motoritself. They must not be used to lift the motor whenit is attached to other equipment.

Handling

StorageThe motor should always be stored indoors, in dry, vibration free and dust free conditions.

Unprotected machined surfaces (shaft-ends andflanges) should be protected with anti-corrosive paint.

It is recommended that shafts are rotated periodically byhand to prevent grease migration.

Anti condensation heaters, if fitted, should preferably beenergised.

TransportationMotors fitted with cylindrical-roller and/or angularcontact bearings must be fitted with locking devicesduring transport.

LiftingOnly lift the motor using the liftling lugs. The center of gravity of motors with the same framemay vary due to different output, mounting arrange-ments and auxiliary equipment.

Check that eyebolts or the lifting lugs integrated with themotor frame are undamaged before lifting. Damagedlifting eyes must not be used.

Lifting eyebolts must be tightened before lifting. Ifneeded the position of the eyebolt must be adjusted withsuitable washers.

Ensure that proper lifting equipment is used and that thesizes of the hooks are suitable for the lifting lugs.

Care must be taken not to damage auxiliary equipmentand cables attached to the motor.

Machine weightsTotal machine weight can vary within the same framesize (center height) depending on different output, mounting arrangement and added features.

The following table shows estimated maximum weightsfor machines in their basic versions as a function offrame material.

On machines weighing more than 25 kg, the actualweight is stamped on the rating plate.

Installation

All rating plate values relating to certification must becarefully checked, to ensure that the motor protection, atmosphere and zone are compatible.

Standards EN 1127-1 (Explosion prevention and protec-tion) and EN 50281-1-2 (Electrical apparatus for use inthe presence of combustible dust) must be respected.Special attention should be paid to dust ignition tem-perature and dust layer thickness in relation to themotors temperature marking.

When fitted in a vertical position with the shaft pointingdownwards, the motor must have a protective coveragainst falling objects and fluid.

Ensure that the motor protection corresponds to theenvironment and weather conditions; e.g. make surethat water cannot enter the terminal box.

The earth terminal on the frame has to be connected toPE (protective earth) with a cable according to Table 3of EN 50014.

Cable connection between network and motor terminalsmust fulfil the requirements stated in country standardsfor installation or in the standard EN 60204-1 accordingto the rated current indicated on the rating plate.

Motors are intended for fixed installation only. In othercases ensure only certified cable glands for increasedsafety and flameproof motors are used. For non-spark-ing motors, cable glands should comply with EN 50014.The IP-class of the cable gland should be at least sameas the motor protection.

Page 17: EEx d, EEx de, EEX e, Ex nA, Ex N, EEx nA, DIP · ^eskimi i \lektrotehni^eskimi standartami, a takve soglasno sledu@]im ewropejskim normam: ... 1 Klass 2 ili EEx d, EEx de ,EEx e

NoteCables should be mechanically protected andclamped close to terminal box to fulfil requirementsof EN 50014 and local installation standards (e.g.NFC 15100).

CoolingCheck that the motor has sufficient airflow. Ensure thatno nearby equipment or surfaces radiate additionalheat to the motor. For more information about higherambient temperatures and cooling, see the MotorGuide or contact ABB Motors.

FoundationThe purchaser bears full responsibility for preparation ofthe foundation.

Metal foundations should be painted to avoid corrosion.

Foundations must be even, and sufficiently rigid towithstand possible short circuit forces. They must bedimensioned to avoid the occurrence of vibration due toresonance.

Foundation studsBolt the foundation studs to the feet of the motor andplace a 1-to-2 mm shim between the stud and the feet.

Align the motor directly using appropriate means.Grout the studs with concrete, check alignment and drillholes for locating pins.

AlignmentCorrect alignment is essential to avoid bearing failures, vibrations and possible fractured shaft extensions.

Slide rails and belt drivesFasten the motor to the slide rails as shown in figure 2.

Place the slide rails horizontally on the same level.Check that the motor shaft is parallel with the driven, ordriving, shaft.

Any belt must be tensioned according to the suppliersinstructions.

WarningExcessive belt tension will damage bearings andcan cause shaft breakage.

Do not exceed the maximum belt forces (i.e. radialbearing loading) stated in the relevant product cata-logues.

Motors with drain plugs for condensation

Non-sparking & Increased safety motorsCheck that open drain holes face downwards when themounting orientation differs from standard horizontalmounting. Motors with sealable plastic drain plugs aredelivered with these in the closed position in M2AAmotors and in the open position in M2BA motors. In verydusty environments, all drain holes should be closed.

Flameproof motorsDrain plugs, if requested, are located at the lower part ofthe end shields in order to allow condensation to escapeof the motor.

Periodically turn the knurled head of the drain plug inorder to prevent jamming. This operation must be donewhen the motor is at standstill.

The regularity of checks depends on the humidity of theambient air, and on the local weather conditions. Thiscan initially be determined experimentally and must thenbe strictly adhered to.

Dust Ignition Protection MotorsThe drain holes must be closed on all dust ignitionprotection motors.

Motor protection against overload and stallingFor increased safety motors (EEx e) the maximumtripping time of protective devices must not be longerthan the time t

E stamped on the motor rating plate.

A line sensitive device should be used to protect the Ex-motor and DIP motors against overload and motorstalling. Such devices should have good reliability and atripping time accurate to ±20%.

BearingsSpecial care should be taken with the bearings. These must be removed using pullers and fitted byheating or using of special tools for the purpose. How toreplace bearings is described in detail in a separateinstruction leaflet available from ABB Motors.

Special recommendations apply when changing thebearings on D.I.P. motors (as the seals should bechanged at the same time)

Fitting coupling halves and pulleysCoupling halves and pulleys must be fitted using suit-able equipment and tools that do not damage thebearings and seals.

Never fit a coupling half or pulley by hammering it intoplace or remove it using a lever pressed against thebody of the motor.

Mounting accuracy of coupling half:check that theclearance b is less than 0.05 mm and that the differencea1 to a2 is also less than 0.05 mm. See figure 3.

Connection

In addition to the main winding and earthing terminals, the terminal box can also contain connections forthermistors, stationary heating elements, or PT 100resistance elements.

WarningVoltage may be connected at standstill inside theterminal box for heating elements or direct windingheating.

Connection diagrams for auxiliary elements andconnection parts can be found inside the terminal boxcover.

Approved connectors must be used to connect theauxiliary elements. Thermistor relays, like otherswitches and relays, must be placed outside the explo-sion hazard zone.

Non-sparking & Increased safety motorsStandard motors have the terminal box fitted on the topand cable entry possibilities on both sides. A full de-scription is contained in the product catalogues.

Unused cable entries must be closed with appropriate(certified for EEx e) plugs and with same IP protectionas stamped on the rating plate.

Flameproof motorsThere are two different types of protection for theterminal box:

- EEx d for M2JA-motors- EEx e for M2KA-motors

Unused cable entries must be closed with certifiedplugs and the same IP protection as stamped on therating plate.

EEx d-motors / M2JAIn an EEx d motor, the connection to the terminal box isstandard, but care must be taken when selecting thecable gland. This must be chosen according to twocriteria:

The cable gland must be of an approved design andhave at least the same protection as the motor. It shouldbe remembered that some cable glands are approvedfor a maximum amount of free space in the terminalbox. The amount of free space for the range is listedbelow for reference.

The type and dimensions of the cable gland mustconform to the type and section of the cable. Thedegree of protection and diameter are specified in thedocuments relating to the cable gland.

When closing the terminal box cover ensure that nodust has settled on the surface gaps. Clean and greasethe surface to ensure easy dismantling in the future.

EEx de-motors / M2KAIn an EEx de motor, the terminal box connection isdefined by very precise norms.

The letter e or box EEx e is written on one part of thebox.

The cable gland must be of an approved design. Thetype and dimensions of the cable gland must conform tothe type and section of the cable. The degree of protec-tion and diameter are specified in the documentsrelating to the cable gland.

Please ensure that assembly of the terminal connectionis carried out precisely in the order that is set out in theassembly plan, which can be found inside the terminalbox.

The creepage distance and clearance must be conformto EN 50019.

The seals of the terminal box must be placed correctlyin the slots provided, in order to ensure complete airtightness. A leak could lead to penetration of dust orwater, creating a risk of flashover to live elements.

Dust Ignition Proof motorsStandard motors have the terminal box fitted on the topwith cable entry possible from both sides. A full descrip-tion is contained in the product catalogues.

Unused cable entries must be closed with appropriateplugs according to EN 50014. The IP degree of protec-tion must be the same as for the terminal box.

Cable glands must have at least the same IP protectionas the motor.

When closing the terminal box cover ensure that nodust has settled on the surface gaps and check that theseal is in good shape if not it has to be replaced withone with the same material properties.

WarningDo not open the motor nor the terminal box whilethe motor is still warm and energised, when explo-sive atmosphere is present.

Dismantling, re-assembly and rewinding

Follow the instructions given in standard IEC 79-19regarding dismantling, re-assembly and rewinding.

Any operation must be undertaken by the manufacturer,i.e. ABB Motors, or by an accredited company.

It must be remembered that no manufacturing alter-ations are permitted on the parts that make up theexplosion-proof enclosure and the parts that ensuredust-tight protection. Also ensure that the ventilation isnever, under no circumstances, obstructed.

Rewinding should always be carried out by qualifiedEEx approved repair shops.

When re-assembling end shield or terminal box to theframe, check that the spigots are clean of paint and dirtwith only a thin layer of grease.

BearingsSpecial care should be taken with the bearings. These must be removed using pullers and fitted byheating or using special tools for the purpose.

Bearing replacement is described in detail in a separateinstruction leaflet available from ABB Motors.

Any indication placed on the motor, such as labels, must be followed.

NoteAny repair by the end user, unless expresslyapproved by the manufacturer, releases themanufacturer from his responsibility to conformity.

Balancing

The motors rotor is dynamically balanced.

As standard, balancing has been carried out using halfkey, and the shaft is marked with a RED tape, with thetext Balanced with half key. To avoid vibration, thecoupling-half or pulley must be balanced with a half keyafter the keyway has been machined.

When balancing with full key, the shaft is marked with aYELLOW tape, with the text Balanced with full key. Toavoid vibration, the coupling-half or pulley must bebalanced without a key after the keyway has beenmachined.

In case of balancing without key, the shaft is markedwith a BLUE tape, with the text Balanced without key.

Special instructions for motors with afrequency converter

ABB motors with protection types EEx d, EEx de, EEx e(on request) and Ex nA/Ex N or EEx nA are certified foruse in variable speed drives.

The use of a motor with a frequency converter must bestudied in advance. Check that the motor fulfils thespecifications. The maximum loadability (T = f(N)) of themotor and the type or characteristics of the converterare shown by an additional rating plate or by a testreport delivered with the motor.

Flameproof motors EEx d(e) operating with a frequencyconverter must be fitted with passive thermal protection(thermistors, PT100). For non-sparking motors Ex nA/Ex N or EEx nA such protection is recommended. Theconverter must be capable of processing this informa-tion.

Bearing currents with frequency converterdrivesThe operation of a frequency converter induces addi-tional high frequency shaft voltages, which can causesparking and high frequency current flow through themotor bearings.

The motor cable must be symmetric and shielded. Themotor must be grounded and connected according tothe manual Grounding and cabling of the drive system. The shield must be connected to both motor frame andthe inverter PE-terminal.

Bearing voltages and currents (sparks) must be avoidedin all Ex-motors. To prevent sparking and high fre-quency bearing current flow inside the motor, a properlydimensioned filter at the converter output is highlyrecommended when nominal voltage is higher than600V. Insulated bearings are fitted as listed below:

Sizes 280-400Insulated bearing in the N-end (non-drive end).

The insulation method is indicated on the motor ratingplate, e.g. INSULATED BEARING IN N-END.

ConnectionIn frequency converter applications, motor frame exter-nal earthing must be used for equalising the potentialbetween the motor frame and the driven machine, unless the two machines are mounted on the samemetallic base. See manual Grounding and cabling ofthe drive system.

For motor frame sizes above IEC 280, use 0.75 x 70mm flat conductor or at least 2 x 50 mm² round conduc-tors. The distance of the round conductors must be atleast 150 mm from each other.

When the motor and the gearbox are mounted on acommon steel fundament, no potential equalisation isneeded.

To comply with EMC-requirements, use cables andconnectors approved for this purpose. (See instructionfor frequency converters).

NOTE: The oscillating frequencies of common modecurrents are very high, from 10 kHz to 1 MHz dependingon the actual drive set-up. Therefore, special attentionshould be paid to the hf-impedance of the potentialequalising lead. A flat wound copper conductor or flatcopper bar is strongly recommended. The conductorlength should be as short as possible.

NoteFor motors with a nominal voltage above 600 V,du/dt filter or sinusoidal filter must be used.

Maintenance and lubrication

WarningStandards relating to connection and use ofelectrical apparatus in hazardous areas must betaken into consideration. Only trained personnelfully acquainted with such standards must handlethis type of apparatus.

Depending on the nature of the work in question, disconnect and lock out before working on motoror driven equipment. Ensure no explosive gas ordust is present while work is in progress.

General inspection1. Inspect the motor at regular intervals. The regular-

ity of checks depends on the humidity level of theambient air, and on the local weather conditions. This can initially be determined experimentally andmust then be strictly adhered to.

2. Keep the motor clean and ensure free ventilationairflow. If the motor is used in a dusty environment, the ventilation system must be regularly checkedand cleaned. For DIP motors respect the environ-ment specifications stated in standard EN 50281-1-2.

3. Check the condition of shaft seals (for example V-ring or radial seal) and replace if necessary. For D.I.P. motors the shaft seals should bechanged at least once a year depending of envi-ronment conditions as mentioned above(1).

4. Check the condition of connections and mountingand assembly bolts.

5. Check the bearing condition by listening for unu-sual noise, vibration measurement, bearing tem-perature, inspection of spent grease or SPMbearing monitoring.

When signs of wear are noticed, dismantle the motor, check the parts and replace if necessary. When bear-ings are changed on D.I.P. motors, replacement bear-ings must be of the same type as those originally fitted. The shaft seals have to be replaced when changingbearing; with seals of same quality and characteristicsas the original ones.

For flameproof motors, periodically turn the knurledhead of the drain plug, if equipped, in order to preventjamming. This operation must be done when the motoris at standstill. The regularity of checks depends on thehumidity level of the ambient air, and on the localweather conditions. This can initially be determinedexperimentally and must then be strictly adhered to.

Lubrication

Bearing types are specified in the respective productcatalogues. On motors size 160 and larger, the bearingtype is indicated on the rating plate.

Motors with permanently greased bearingsMotors up to frame size 180 are normally fitted withpermanently greased bearings of either 1Z or 2Z types.

As a guide, adequate lubrication can be achieved forthe following duration, according to L1 at ambienttemperature of 25°C.

32 000 - 45 000 duty hours for 4 pole machines.1)

16 000 - 26 000 duty hours for 2 and 2/4 pole machines. 1)

The shorter times are valid for larger frame sizes.1) Depending on application and load conditions, see

applicable product catalogue.

Hours of operation for vertical motors are half of theabove values.

Motors with relubrication system

WarningBeware of all rotating parts.

Relubrication procedure:- Remove grease outlet plug if fitted.- Press fresh grease into the bearing until all old

grease has been forced out.- Let the motor run 1-2 hours to ensure that all

excess grease is forced out of the bearing. Closethe grease outlet plug if fitted.

Regrease motors while running. If this is not possible, lubrication can be carried out while the motor is at astandstill. In this case, use only half the quantity ofgrease, then run the motor for a few minutes at fullspeed. When the motor has stopped, the remainingquantity of grease can then be forced in until the oldgrease has been replaced.

After 1-2 running hours, close the grease outlet plug (iffitted).

The grease outlet plug must be removed permanentlywith automatic lubrication.

If the motor is fitted with a lubrication information plate, follow the values given; otherwise use the values in thetable below.

ABB Motors policy is to have reliability as a vital issuein bearing lubrication intervals. That is why we followthe L1-principle (meaning that 99% of the motors aresure to make the interval time). According to the L1principle, the lubrication intervals are as follows:

Lubrication intervals for vertical machines are half of theabove values.

The amount of grease stated in the table should bedoubled if an automatic regreasing system is used.

The table values are based on the motor running atrated output in an ambient temperature of about +25°(approx. 80°C bearing temperature). The values shouldbe halved for 15°C increase in bearing temperature andmay be doubled for 15°C decrease in ambient tempera-ture.

WarningThe maximum operating temperature of the greaseand bearings must not be exceeded.

Higher speed operation, e.g. in frequency converterapplications, or lower speed with heavy load will requireshorter lubrication intervals. Consult ABB Sales Officein such cases.

Suitability of bearings for high-speed operation mustalso be checked.

LubricantsWhen regreasing, use only special ball bearing greasewith the following properties:

- good quality grease with lithium complex soap andwith mineral- or PAO-oil

- base oil viscosity 70-150 cST at 40°C- consistency NLGI grade 2 or 3- temperature range -30°C - +140°C, continuously.

Grease with the correct properties is available from allthe major lubricant manufacturers.

The following (or similar) types of high performancegrease can be used

• Esso Unirex N2 or N3• Shell Albida EMS 2• SKF LGHQ 3• Mobil Mobilith SHC 100• Klüber Kluberplex BEM 41-132

NOTE! Always use high speed grease for high speedmachines and some other models, e.g. M2/M3_ 355and 400 2-pole machine, when the speed factor ishigher than 400 000 (calculated as Dm x n where Dm =average bearing diameter, mm; n = rotational speed, r/min). The following, or similar, types of grease can beused:

• Kluber Asonic GHY 72• Kluber Asonic HQ 72-102• Shell Albida EMS 2• Esso LT2• Mobil Mobilith SHC 100

The following normal types of grease can be used if theregreasing interval is halved (these types of greaseshould not be used when bearing temperature is above100°C)

• Esso Beacon 2 or 3• Shell Alvania RL2 or RL3• SKF LGMT 2 or 3• Mobil Mobilux 2• Kluber Centoplex 2• BP Energrease LS2

If the make of grease is changed and compatibility isuncertain, consult ABB Sales Office.

Highly loaded and/or slowly rotating bearings requireEP-grease.

If the ambient temperature is below -25°C or above+55°C, or bearing temperature is above 110°C, consultABB Sales Office regarding suitable grease.

WarningGrease can cause skin irritation and eye inflamma-tion. Follow all safety precautions specified by themanufacturer.
