Cockroaches are insects of the order Blattaria or Blattodea, of which about 30 species out of

4,500 total are associated with human habitats. About four species are well known as pest.

The researcher conducted this study entitled Effect of Combined Hydrochloric Acid and

Beechwood Fruit Extract against Cockroaches (HCl and Gmelina arborea var. conosoidis

against Cockroaches).

In the conductance of the study, the Beechwood fruits were cleaned, aerated to dry, and

pounded to extract the juice. Different concentrations of Beechwood fruit extract and

hydrochloric acid were made and three treatments were prepared.

1. Treatment with 100% pure extract, Treatment B with 75% pure extract, 25% HCl, and

Treatment C with 50% HCl and 50% pure extract.2. The result showed that Treatment C has the highest mean of mortality followed by

Treatment B and C.

3. The researchers found out that the concentration with the highest amount of HCl has the

greatest mortality of cockroaches.

4. Based on the gathered results the common household chemical HCl, is capable of

exterminating cockroaches.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The world has not yet grasped the extremely of knowledge; because every time when answers

are formed, new queries are born, and the search begins de novo.

Free hydrochloric acid was first formally described in the 16th century by Libavius, who

prepared it by heating salt in clay crucibles. Other authors claim that pure hydrochloric acid

was first discovered by the German Benedictine monk Basil Valentine in the 15th century, by

heating common salt and green vitriol, whereas others claim that there is no clear reference to

the preparation of pure hydrochloric acid until the end of the sixteenth century.

Gmelina arborea leaves are considered good for cattle (crude protein – 11.9%) and are also used

as a feed to eri-silkworm.‘Kumizh tree’ when burnt yields the whitest possible ash; mention is made by certain ‘rock artenthusiasts’ that this ash is one of ingredient in the semi solid white ochre used to draw the

very ancient ‘cave paintings’ as old as 3,000 to 5,000 years or more; found in the dense forests of

Tamilnadu.

STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES

General Problems:

This study aims to investigate the effect of combined Hydrochloric acid and Gmelina arborea

fruit extract in eliminating cockroaches.

The study sought to answer the following questions:

Specific Problems:

1. What is the mortality of cockroaches after exposing the different concentrations of

Beechwood fruit extract with HCl?

2. What is the effect of Beechwood fruit extract combined with HCl on cockroaches?

Hypothesis:

100% concentration of Beechwood fruit extract is very effective in abolishing cockroaches.

However, the Beechwood fruit extract is not expected to have greater effect in killing

cockroaches than those sprayed with commercially sold chemical insecticides.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDYThe result of the study are directed in the following: Firstly, the elimination of cockroaches

using a common household material and a tree, which only its wood considered beneficial,
