ATTENDANCE POLICY

WE WANT YOU HERE! It is important that you are at school every day ready to learn and succeed! The law requires that every student attend school regularly. Even if absences are excused by a parent/guardian, you will still miss important instruction and lessons that can cause you to fall behind in your work.

• To have an absence excused: Bring a written note from your parent or guardian to the Counseling Center within 5 school days of the absence. Absences will not be excused over the phone. Be aware that the number of excused absences is limited to 7 days or 35 class periods.

o Excuse notes should include: student’s name, date of absence, and parent/guardian’s name and signature.

o Doctor’s notes will be accepted at any time during the school year. Please bring a note from your doctor’s office to the Counseling Center or they can fax notes to 385-646-5156.

o After 7 full days or 35 class periods of excused absences, a doctor’s note may be required to excuse subsequent absences.

o Excusing an absence does not excuse a student from school work. It is the student’s responsibility to coordinate with their teachers to make up missed work immediately upon their return to school.

• If you need to leave school early: Parents and guardians can check out a student by requesting a street pass from the Counseling Center.

o Bring a signed, written note to the Counseling Center before school or in-between classes. Your street pass will be delivered to you when you need to leave.

o OR a parent or guardian can check you out in person in the Counseling Center. The person picking you up must be listed as a contact on your school records and will be required to show picture ID.

o If you leave with a street pass and then return to school in the same day, please check back in at the Counseling Center before returning to class.

• Extended absences: Parents are encouraged to seek prior approval for extended absences. If pre-approved by administration, those absences will not negatively impact the student’s citizenship grade.

TRUANCY Truancy is defined as an unexcused absence. Truancy may result in the loss of eligibility for activities and offices, lower citizenship grades, loss of work for academic credit (no make-up work offered), lunch detention, in-school suspension (ISS), parent conferences, referral to Truancy Court, and/or out of school suspension. A student who is at school but is in another teacher’s learning area is also considered truant. This form of truancy causes more disruption than other forms of truancy and therefore has more severe consequences.

CITIZENSHIP GRADING The following will be considered when determining a student’s citizenship grade:

• Behavior: Any behavior that interferes with the process of teaching and learning is unacceptable and will result in lower citizenship and other appropriate consequences.

• Attendance: Granite School District’s policy is used to determine citizenship grades based on attendance and tardies.

Granite District policy states:

1. Seven or more days (or equivalent class periods) of excused absences within a school year are considered excessive and may require a doctor’s note to excuse subsequent absences.

2. After five or more days (or equivalent class periods) of unexcused absences within a school year, the school will mail the student and parents a Truancy Letter asking for the parent’s help with their student’s attendance and warning of consequences for further truancy. Please note, a student must be in attendance 4 (four) hours of a school day to receive credit for one full day.

3. After ten days (or equivalent class periods) of unexcused absences within a school year, the school will mail the student and parents a Habitual Truancy Notice/Pre-Court Hearing. The Habitual Truancy Notice requires the student (under age 14) and parents to appear at a Pre-Court hearing. Schools may assess a $48.00 truancy fine.

4. Students will be referred to the Third District Juvenile Court. 5. Students with two or more unexcused absences may not receive higher than a “0” in

citizenship. Granite District policy requires all students to maintain a 2.0 CPA (Citizenship Point Average) in order to graduate from high school. Excessive absences may jeopardize a student’s ability to graduate from high school.

6. Students wishing to participate in junior high or high school athletics and activities must maintain a 2.0 CPA.

TARDY POLICY

You are expected to arrive to your classes on time. If you are late to class, there will be consequences. There will also be rewards for students who are not tardy to class. Students with an excused tardy MUST come with a note from a parent! The secretary will not be able to accept phone calls to excuse morning tardies. Tardies are school wide, not per class. Each new term is a fresh start. Administration will assign the following consequences each week: 1st & 2nd tardy = warning and note to class 3rd tardy = detention during lunch in a separate room not with friends in the cafeteria

4th tardy = overnight suspension – student may only return with a parent the next day to attend a mandatory conference with administration

5th tardy = all day in-school suspension doing homework and making up missing work

ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY

PLEASE NOTE: Eisenhower Jr. High school personnel are not responsible for lost,

stolen, or damaged electronic devices. Administration is not required to investigate

lost or stolen items. Students who bring these items to school assume all risks.

A. Use of cell phones and electronic devices at school is subject to these restrictions:

• Cell phones may only be used during a student’s lunch.

• Cell phones may not be used in classrooms, unless otherwise directed by a teacher.

• Cell phones may not be used in hallways, including during passing time.

• Except during lunch, ear buds/headphones are not allowed to be worn and should not

be visible.

• Other electronic devices such as iPods, MP3 players, and gaming systems, should not be

brought to school or be on school premises. If a student brings such a device to school,

Eisenhower is not responsible for the theft, loss, or damage to that device.

• Students who bring such devices to school are subject to the confiscation policy set forth

below in accordance with GSD Policy.

• Students who use cell phones in violation of any provision of the Discipline Code, the

school’s policy, or Granite School District’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy, will

be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary

responses set forth in this document.

B. Confiscation and return of electronic devices:

• Teachers and administrators may take disciplinary action if a student is

using a cell phone or any other device during instructional time.

• If a device is confiscated by a teacher and brought to the office, a

parent or guardian will need to pick up and sign for the item.

• A $10 fine will be assessed on the third violation in which an electronic

device is confiscated and brought to the office.

C. Personal Property:

• Lockers are assigned to each student. Lockers are the property of the school and are

subject to search by school officials at any time. Never share locker combinations. A friend

today is not always a friend tomorrow! Students are responsible to keep the locker issued

to them clean and free from damage. A fine may be assessed for damage or misuse.

• Backpacks, bags, and purses must be left in the student’s locker during school hours.

They are not allowed in classrooms or other areas of the building.

• Bikes must be parked in the bike racks on the north or south side of the school. All bikes

should be secured with a lock. The school is not responsible for any theft or damage to

bikes on school property. The bike area is off-limits to students during school hours,

including lunchtime.

SCHOOL SAFETY

Student acts of violence, use or possession of a weapon (real or look alike), criminal behavior, or gang related activity is prohibited in all Granite District schools, on school grounds, at school-sanctioned activities, or when students are being transported in vehicles dispatched by the district. Students found in violation of the Safe School Policy are subject to disciplinary action, as outlined by the district and Utah State Law. The School Safety Policy absolutely prohibits the following:

1. Any threat of violence. 2. Possession of any type of real, look alike, or pretend weapon, regardless of intent. 3. Any form of gang activity. 4. Any type of criminal behavior. 5. Any destruction or defacement of school property. 6. Willful disobedience or persistent defiance of authority.

Violators of this policy may subject themselves to the following:

1. Immediate request for police investigation. 2. Automatic suspension from school. 3. Mandatory parent or guardian conference with school or district authorities. 4. Referral to District Student Services Office for placement determination. 5. Placement in an alternative program. 6. Expulsion. (A mandatory one year suspension for any incident involving firearms).

Students involved in a fight will be suspended for up to three days and will be assessed a $50.00 fine. Drug Free School Policy: Granite School District prohibits any illegal use, possession, distribution, sale, or being under the influence of alcohol, any controlled substances or intoxicants of any kind, or possession of drug paraphernalia while on school property, within 1000 feet of the school, or while engaged in or attending a school sponsored activity. Violations of this policy will result in an automatic law enforcement referral, suspension, and district notification. Sexual Harassment: Sexual harassment typically involves offensive or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct or unwelcome communication of a sexual nature targeted at another individual based on that individual’s sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or conformance/non-conformance with a real or perceived gender or sexual stereotype that creates an intimidation, hostile, or offensive educational environment. The State Office of Risk Management has created a five-point test for determining sexual harassment:

1. Is the harassment sexual in nature? 2. Was it unwanted and/or unwelcome? 3. Was it severe, persistent, or pervasive? 4. Did it reasonably interfere with or create a hostile work/classroom environment? 5. Would a reasonable person similarly situated be affected?

Anyone who is a victim of sexual harassment or who personally witnesses sexual harassment has the right to file a complaint with the school administration or district authorities. The school and district have a zero tolerance policy toward sexual harassment.

Definition: Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

When bullying happens, there is a variety of interventions and/or consequences based on the situation. Here are some examples:

• The students participate in a mediation with a counselor who helps them understand the impact bullying causes to students.

• Parents may need to come to school to meet with an administrator about the problem.

• The bully may receive school discipline (i.e. In School Suspension).

• The bully may be referred to the district’s safe course classes.

• The bully may need to see the school’s police officer.

• The bully may be suspended. In extreme cases, the student may be referred to Safe School.

Most bullying happens when someone is trying to be funny at the cost of someone else’s feelings. The other most common bullying happens through gossiping about others.

A LOT of bullying happens on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Texting. If what you post on social media or text affects the learning of students at school, you will have serious consequences. “Stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.”

If you see bullying…

• Stand up and tell the bully to stop

• Tell an adult at school and your parent or guardian

• Be a friend to the person being bullied

If you are acting like a bully…

• Stop immediately

• Think about how your actions and words are hurting another person

• Apologize to the person you are bullying

If you are bullied…

• Tell him/her to stop

• Walk away to a safe place

• Tell an adult at school and your parent or guardian

• Remember, it’s not your fault

ADDITIONAL SCHOOL POLICIES AND EXPECATIONS

Academic Grading: Students will receive disclosure statements from their teachers. Disclosure statements provide detailed information on individual teacher’s evaluation criteria, expectations, and general policies. Students and parents should read each disclosure statement carefully to ensure understanding of the teacher’s policies. Advisory/STAR Time: Advisory/Star Time will be after first period Monday through Thursday, beginning at 9:05 AM. Students may participate in extension activities and/or receive additional help in academic classes. Assemblies: Students will report to the auditorium with their advisory class. All students must remain seated with their class throughout the assembly. Students will be orderly, quiet and respectful of the auditorium as a space for special events. Students will be removed from the assembly or the assembly may be canceled if the audience fails to be respectful. Students are to remain seated until dismissed. Binder: Students are expected to attend school prepared with their school-issued binder each day. As part of the basic school fee, each student will receive a binder which includes: basic organizational supplies, planner pages, sections for each class, and this student handbook. Students are expected to use their binder in every class. Bullying, Cyberbullying, Hazing, and Retaliation: Any type of these behaviors is prohibited. Bullying and other similar conduct can be physical, verbal, or written. It can come in the form of social pressure, criticism, or disrespectful treatment. It can also look like intentionally excluding others from an activity. This type of conduct may be obvious or it may be subtle, and it can include convincing another person to commit the prohibited actions or even agree to be the victim of the treatment. Bullying and other types of similar conduct can also be considered discrimination or harassment if the conduct is based on a person’s race, gender, or some other personal characteristic. Reporting Bullying: There are several avenues for reporting unsafe behavior including incidents of discrimination, harassment, bullying, cyberbullying, hazing and retaliation.

• A “Buddy Box” located across from Mrs. Cochran’s office may be used for making written reports

• You can use the SafeUT app on your phone or your parent’s phone • You can talk to any principal, teacher or other staff member at the school

Granite School District will promptly investigate all reports and take appropriate steps to eliminate the offending conduct, address its effects, and prevent it from reoccurring. In addition to making complaints to school administrators, complaints may be filed with a Designated District Official by calling (385) 646-4009. The District will attempt to resolve issues working collaboratively with parents, guardians, and patrons at the lowest possible level. If civil rights concerns cannot be resolved at the school or District level, complaints may be filed with the Office for Civil Rights, Region VIII, U.S. Department of Education, Federal Building, Suite 310, 1244 Speer Boulevard, Denver, Colorado 80204.

Prohibitions described in this handbook shall be enforced for conduct occurring outside of school, school hours, or school-related activities if the conduct materially disrupts the educational environment. Students found in violation of District/School policies regarding school safety, discrimination, harassment, bullying, cyberbullying, hazing, and retaliation may subject themselves to student discipline including parent/guardian conferences, suspension/expulsion, referral to law enforcement, placement in an alternative program, and/or other consequences and action steps appropriate for the circumstance. Buses: Busing is provided by Granite School District for students who live more than two miles away from Eisenhower. Students who live less than two miles from Eisenhower are considered walking students. Transportation by bus is a qualified right, dependent on good conduct of the student. Misbehavior on the bus will result in parent notification and may result in suspension or termination of the student’s right to ride. Cafeteria: The EJHS cafeteria serves breakfast and lunch daily. Food from any source needs to be consumed in the cafeteria and may NOT be taken into other parts of the building. The cost for breakfast is $1.05 and for lunch is $1.65 per day. Lunch deposits can be made in the main office in the box next to Mrs. Cochran’s office. Students may also pay online at www.PayPams.com. Application forms for free and reduced lunches are available online at www.myschoolapps.com.

Please observe these cafeteria rules: Wait Your Turn

Class Changes: Students wanting to make changes to their schedule should fill out a request to meet with their counselor. Class schedule changes will be considered on an individual basis and may require administrative approval. A $5 class change fee may apply. Closed Campus: Granite School District Policy mandates a closed campus for all junior high schools. Students must stay on school grounds from the time of arrival until school is dismissed. Students are not permitted to leave at lunch time. Students are not permitted to order take-out food for delivery to the school. Unless with a supervised after school activity, all students must leave campus by 3:00 PM. Students waiting for rides at 3:00 PM will be asked to leave campus and begin walking home. Please plan accordingly. Counseling Services: If you are having a problem or conflict, need to change your schedule or just need to talk to someone, your counselor is the person to see. The letter your last name starts with determines who your counselor is:

A-De TBA Di-Ha Anissa Christensen (M-Fri mornings) He-O Larae Thomas P-Z Tere Gerber

Deliveries: Students are not permitted to order take-out food for delivery to the school. We are not able to accept packages and deliveries in the office for students. Please do not send them. Discipline: Discipline measures may include, but are not limited to the following:

As such, the District prohibits all discrimination, harassment (including sexual harassment), and retaliation against any individual based on race, color, sex, pregnancy, religion, national origin, age, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity in its educational programs, activities, admissions, access to facilities, or other treatment. Discriminating or harassing behavior targeted at an individual or group of individuals often takes one or more of the following forms:

• committing aggressive or violent physical acts or making threats of the same

• unwelcome communication, jokes, stories, pictures, gestures, or displays of offensive material

• isolating, humiliating, or demeaning an individual or intentionally excluding from participation in or access to any facilities, programming, activities, employment, or other benefits

• using epithets, slurs, or negative stereotypes or engaging in name calling, verbal abuse, or offensive comments

Emergency Procedures: Junior High Schools are required to conduct two emergency evacuation drills per year. The school is also required to hold multiple lockdown drills and an earthquake drill. Teachers have emergency packets that indicate where their class is to stand on the field during an evacuation. When a drill occurs, students are required to be on their best behavior, follow their teachers to the designated area, and stand quietly until the drill is over. Students who are disruptive, insubordinate, or not with their assigned group will be required to meet with an administrator for disciplinary action. End of Year Activities: The requirements for year-end activities are as follows:

• A cumulative CPA of 2.0 at the end of third term

• A cumulative GPA of 2.0 at the end of third term

• Ninth Grade Students need to have earned 5.00 credits at the end of third term and grades should indicate adequate progress towards graduation. Any “F”s in the fourth term.

• NO suspensions and no detentions owing during fourth term.

• School Fees, Lunch Balances, & Fines are current Hall Passes: Students should plan restroom breaks for lunch time or passing time between classes. Students will be allowed a hall pass for emergencies only. For identification purposes, the hall pass is an orange vest with the teacher’s room printed on the back. Students must wear the vest. Only one student can use a hall pass at a time. Incentive Activities: Incentive activities/rewards include, but are not limited to the following:

• The 200 Club – This is an incentive program for rewarding school-wide positive behaviors. Faculty members will stamp student cards for positive behaviors. Once a student receives 5 stamps he or she will turn their card in for a prize, and their names will be entered on the 200 Club Board. When this Board becomes full, all names will be put into a drawing for a larger prize.

• Student of the Month – Every month, staff members are asked which students have greatly improved in one of the school wide behavioral expectations, academically or in social skills. Students receive the honor of having their picture placed in the main hall where visitors and fellow students are reminded that the students of the month have received a special award.

Internet Usage: Every student and their parent/guardian are required to read and sign an Internet Usage Policy form. When using a computer at school, students should be on websites or projects authorized by a supervising adult. Students who write, search, or lookup inappropriate things on a computer at school will have their privilege taken away and will be reported to an administrator for further disciplinary action. Lost and Found: Lost and Found is located in the main office, cafeteria, and gym. Items not claimed will be donated to local charitable organizations. Lost and Missing Items: Eisenhower Junior High School is not responsible for personal items that are lost or stolen. Students are encouraged to leave all valuable items at home. In the event an item becomes lost, students should complete the “Lost or Stolen Item Report” from the Assistant Principal’s office and give it to the police officer so he can investigate. Make-up Work: Students are expected to obtain all make-up work from their teachers immediately upon return to school. Each teacher’s disclosure statement contains the procedure for make-up work in that class. Medication at School: Granite School District has outlined specific requirements that must be met before medication can be given to a student by any staff member. A student requiring medication while at school must notify the Counseling Center, fill out required paperwork, and follow the district policy regarding such before the medication can be brought to school.

Under no circumstances besides those stated above will a staff member dispense any prescription or over-the-counter medication to a student.

Report Cards: Students and parents may access current student grades via the district parent portal or through the Portal Login link at http://schools.graniteschools.org/eisenhowerjr/ A final report card is sent home with the student at the end of each term (within one week after the term ends). Fourth term report cards are mailed home. Substitute Policy: If there is a substitute in the classroom, students are required to treat the guest teacher as they would their regular teacher. If students are sent to an administrator by a substitute, the student will be out-of-school suspended for the rest of the day. Visitors: Parents are always welcome at Eisenhower Jr. High. All visitors must report directly to the main office with picture ID to be issued a visitor’s pass. Parents wishing to visit with a teacher should make arrangements beforehand as to not interrupt class instruction time. Parents are not allowed in the cafeteria during lunch. Please note: No student visitors are allowed during school hours.
