Lakshya

Lakshya pairs underprivileged children with volunteers who act as their mentors and role models. The programme helps the children realize their potential and transforms the volunteers into more socially aware leaders.

WhyTo enrich the lives of underprivileged children (Mentees) through a caring relationship with a personal mentor who will support, encourage and build their self-confidence.

To groom the leadership qualities and the sense of social responsibility in young volunteers (Mentors), our country's future leaders, by exposing them to some of the most pressing social problems of our country.

HowEnables children from classes 9 and 10 to complete the cycle of growth by guiding them to focus on a career of their choice or need. The skill-building sessions based on some of the best practices from around the world.

Lakshya is modelled on mentorship programmes like the Big Brothers Big Sisters (USA), Vaazhai, and Dronacharya & Ekalavya.

Mentors meet mentees for two hours every week and assist them with school or home work, listen to their problems and support them in challenges they encounter. In the process, mentors instil self confidence and the ability to solve one’s own problem in the children.

Mentor’s Gain: Communication skills, Leadership, Inclusiveness, Social Sensitivity

Mentee’s Gain: Absenteeism decreases, improvement in academic performance, children pursuing higher education and entering organized sectors of labour increases.

Gram Jaagran

An initiative by EEEV Foundation to understand the educational status of the children in villages across India and awaken their communities

Objective of this survey: To understand the Reading and Arithmetic Skills of the children in villages through simple evaluation tools. Though we evaluate the ability of a child to read and do math, the intention is not to grade/test them based on correct and incorrect answers but make their communities understand the scope for improvement at each level.· Make a note of the street, village, district names on top of the each sheet. Street name should be changed whenever necessary. · If there are any children between classes 3 - 5 , follow the below procedure

Before the survey:

- Contact the ASER Centre/ EEEV Foundation coordinator for your state to identify villages you can work with, our coordinators will help you choose a suitable village.

- Read through these instructions completely

- Take print outs of the Reading & Math tools from the resources section below

- If you don’t find the tool you need us email us at

[email protected] we’ll arrange it for you- Complete the survey between Oct 2 - 8. It takes 5-10 minutes per child, so if you take 2-3 friends along you should be able to complete one village in 3 hours

- Once you reach the village, try to inform the village elders/sarpanch/leaders before you start, they might help you greatly speed up your work.

14

Page 15: Ek Ehsaas Ek Vishwas

During the survey:

Surveyors are requested to put up a smile and be humble while conversing with children. Create a friendly atmosphere by breaking the ice (like asking if they watch movies/cartoons, who their favourite actor/character is) before you start using the evaluation tools on them. Ensure there is no interference (passing any negative comments about the child’s academics) from parents or neighbours during the course of evaluation. Such intervention would only mount pressure on the children to perform. Create a comfortable situation for the children to undergo this evaluation. If possible, one surveyor can speak to those around while the other speaks to the child.

Encourage the child. Be patient. Give the child ample time to read, to think and to solve.

Steps to be followed during the evaluation:

1) Reading Ability: The child should be able to read the Paragraph comfortably, not haltingly or as a loose string of words and not make more than 3 mistakes

2) Arithmetic Ability: The child should be able to do both the subtraction problems

Evaluation shouldn’t be done in front of the children as it could affect their morale.

Record the data in the Survey recording sheet

AFTER THE SURVEY – Awakening the community

· At the end of the survey you could call a meeting of the adults (esp. parents of the surveyed children) and explain about the status of education in their community.

· Do not name children but you can tell them about the general status.

15

Page 16: Ek Ehsaas Ek Vishwas

· Do not pass unqualified opinions; let the parents understand it for themselves.

· Nudge them to demand better quality from their schools and teachers· Share the results, your experiences, photos with us at [email protected]· Blog about it, share on Facebook etc and inspire youth across the nation to take up Gram Jaagran!
