Objective Increase the capacity of guest services at Hacienda El Refugio through construction of a new Dining Hall and expanding accommodations. Rationale The guest services experience at El Refugio is an integral part of our mission to facilitate transformation. Increasing our food service and lodging capacity will enable us to reach more people with the abundant life that Christ offers in an improved guest service experience. This also positions us for greater efficiency which means we can be more sustainable and keep the costs low for participants. Project Leader Paul Reichert Director, Hacienda El Refugio [email protected] Time Frame The first phases of the project are underway and due for completion in summer 2015. The final phase of the project, the addition of the new dining hall, is scheduled for Fall 2015.

There are over 300 million young people in Latin Ameri-ca, and yet youth ministry is severely undervalued and underdeveloped. Thousands of youth leaders are disillu-sioned and discour-aged. Millions of youth re-main unreached. For over 15 years El Refugio has wit-nessed waves of impact as lives are transformed and as a result churches are strength-ened through improved lead-ership and spiritually vibrant

young people. Our hope is that through the growth of out-door ministry programs many more will experience this blessing. Through them, a new generation of leaders would be trained, new ministries launched, existing ministries revi-talized, and the Latin Church strengthened and renewed.

In 1998, Youth World identified the need to develop a training and retreat center to serve the needs of the leaders in the na-tional church, families, and the young people of Ecuador. In De-cember of 1999, a piece of property was purchased on the edge of Calacalí, Ecuador and it began being developed into what we know today as ‘Hacienda El Refugio:’ just under 300 acres of beautiful, forested land, nestled in the Andes mountains. El Refugio was founded with big dreams and the belief that God would use it to further His kingdom by providing a unique setting for people to hear His voice in a new way. As a ministry we de-sire to see each and every life impacted as a result of their time spent at El Refugio, so we are extremely intentional about the experiences we customize for each group that we host.

Ultimately our goal is that people would be living and experienc-ing the abundant life that Christ offers. This is accomplished with-in the framework of a 4-point strategy:

1. Identify the Group 2. Create an Environment 3. Facilitate for Transformation 4. Empower Them to Pursue God’s Calling

This is a powerful process that we have seen work over and over, regardless of the group, age of the participants or their back-grounds. Ultimately, when you get people in a setting out of their comfort zone and challenge them, and then help them to process the experience, amazing growth happens. We hope to see leaders leading better, deeper relationships with Christ, churches strengthened, and outdoor ministry multiplied.

Increased Efficiency Cost-Effectiveness Increased Capacity More Sustainability Enhanced Experience

The right equipment will enable our staff to prepare quality food for up to 120 people at a time. Industrial storage means we can pursue food distribution services, buying in bulk, and cutting down on grocery store runs. Being able to serve up to 120 people enables us to host multiple groups on the same day . We’ll also be adding an additional 16 beds. All of this lends to the sustainability of the ministry by giving our staff the tools they need and strengthening the financial outlook. The beautiful design of the dining hall space includes an impressive fire place and loft area for connecting in the evenings. The open ceiling concept in the rooms will bring in much needed sunlight to warm these dark spaces.
