ter and promote environ-mental awareness in the Puerto Escondido commu-nity are striving to develop. Educational, private, and government organizations as well as individuals have fo-cused on the recollection and recycling of reusable materi-als such as PET (polyethylene terephtalat).

Eleventh-grade students of Juana de Asbaje school, located on Alejandro Cardenas n° 1 (entering La Punta), playfully finished building an “ecological office” in September of 2012 as part of a science and office computerization class taught by Rocío Conde Cuevas. The idea was to develop an innovative project that would motivate young people to use PET creatively to reduce pollution, involving the students from the ninth and 10th grades, as well as parents and neighbors. In February of 2011 they began their col-lection or “bottle drive” reaching a total of approximately 8,000 2.5 and 3-litre cola bottles. After being washed with water and bleach and cut to brick size, these were built into a 4 x 5 concrete building thanks to the support of an engineer and a bricklayer. They covered the roof with milk boxes and added egg cartons onto the inside as insulation to reduce the heat.

fomentan y promueven la sensibilidad ecológica entre la comunidad de Puerto Es-condido intentan desarrol-larse en forma positiva, así organizaciones educativas, privadas, de gobierno o de manera personal se han enfocado en la recolección y reciclaje de materiales re-utilizables como lo es el PET (tereftalato de polietileno).

En forma lúdica los alum-nos de tercer año de se-cundaria de la escuela Juana de Asbaje, ubicada en Alejandro Cárdenas nº1 (entrando a la Punta) con-cluyeron la elaboración de una “oficina ecológica”

en septiembre de 2012, producto de la asignatura de ciencia y ofimática que imparte Rocío Conde Cuevas. Su idea fue realizar un proyecto innovador que motivase a los jóvenes a usar cre-ativamente el PET y disminuir la contaminación, involucrando además a los estudiantes de primer y segundo año, apoderados y vecinos.

IT WAS A LONG WAIT for the ac-tivation of the new traffic signals in town, but worth it. A recent visit to the office of Dr. Omar on Avenida Oaxaca demonstrated the value of the new lights.

With the doctor’s visit concluded the normal routine is to cross Avenida Oaxaca to have one’s sub-scription filled at the pharmacy. It was usually a longish wait for traffic to subside, or as often as not a mad dash and a prayer to get to the other side. And then do it again upon leaving the pharmacy.

The traffic signal at that inter-section has made life simpler and safer.

According to the Agencia Mu-nicipal, monitoring and testing of the new signals continues so perhaps we can expect to see some adjustments to make fur-ther improvements to traffic flow. Some of the lights have been set to change very quickly, and slowing traffic as a result.

Now all we need do is hope that a better system has been imple-mented for replacing burned-out bulbs.

LA ESPERA POR LA ACTI-VACION de las nuevas señales de tráfico en la ciudad fue larga pero valió la pena. Una visita reciente a la oficina del Dr. Omar en Avenida Oaxaca demostró el valor de las nuevas luces.

Con la visita al doctor con-cluida, la rutina normal es cruzar la Avenida Oaxaca para el surtido de la receta en la farmacia. Normalmente se trataba de una espera larga para que disminuyera el tráfico, o con la misma frecuencia, una carrera frenética y una oración para llegar al otro lado. Luego se repetía el proceso a la salida de la farmacia.

La señal del tráfico en aquella intersección ha hecho la vida más simple y segura.

Según la Agencia Municipal, se continúa el monitoreo y las pruebas a las nuevas señales, por lo que quizás podamos esperar algunos ajustes para seguir mejorando el flujo del

tráfico. Algunas de las luces se han programado para cambiar muy rápidamente, desacele-rando el tráfico como resultado.

Ahora todo lo que falta es es-perar que un mejor sistema se implemente para reemplazar los focos fundidos.

EL AGENTE MUNICIPAL de Puerto Escondido, Arq. Antonio Aragón “El Camarón” Roldán, se presentará nuevamente como candidato en la campaña por la presidencia municipal de San Pedro Mixtepec. Aragón hizo el anuncio y renunció a su puesto de alcalde durante su segundo informe anual el 10 de marzo. Ha sido candidato por el puesto de San Pedro previamente pero sin éxito.

Su informe al público recordó las mejorías a las obras públicas de la ciudad incluyendo las re-cientes instalaciones de nuevas señales de tráfico, una campaña para promover el repintado,

again campaign for the municipal presidency in San Pedro Mixtepec. Aragón made the announcement, and resigned his poition as mayor, during his second annual report on March 10. He has run unsuc-cessfully for the San Pedro posi-tion before.

His report to the public recalled the improvements made to public works in the city, including the recent installation of new traffic signals, a campaign to encourage repainting, many road repairs, and upgrades to the Benito Juárez sports centre.

El Camarón also noted some joint efforts by the two munici-palities within whose boundaries Puerto sits. One of those is a new public walkway announced re-cently to link Playa Marinero with Playa Zicatela.

The architect Emigdio Santiago Silva will assume the mayor’s du-ties until a new mayor is elected in July.

Meanwhile, in San Pedro Mixte-pec Presidente Municipal Eduar-do Rojas Zavaleta has resigned his seat to run for the state congress, district nine.

AN ELEVATED PUBLIC WALK-WAY is to be constructed between Playa Marinero and Playa Zicatela, a joint project of San Pedro Mix-tepec, Santa María Colotepec, the Agencia Municipal of Puerto Escondido and the state govern-ment.

The $20-million MXN project will link the two beaches with a 550-metre-long bridge, wide enough (3.8 metres) to accommo-date pedestrians and wheelchairs. It will pass by the Laguna Agua Dulce, the misnamed cesspool at the mouth of the Río Regadillo.

El Camarón también men-cionó algunos esfuerzos con-juntos entre las municipali-dades de San Pedro Mixtapec y Santa Maria Colotepec, dentro de las cuales se sitúa Puerto. Uno de estos es un pasaje pea-tonal público anunciado re-cientemente para unir Playa Marinero con Playa Zicatela.

UN ANDADOR PUBLICO ELEVADO se construirá entre Playa Marinero y Playa Zicatela, en un proyecto conjunto entre las municipalidades de San Pedro Mixtepec y Santa María Colotepec, la Agencia Munici-pal de Puerto Escondido y el gobierno del estado.

El proyecto, de $20 millones MXN, unirá las dos playas con un puente de 550 metros de

largo, ancho lo suficiente (3.8) como para acomodar a pea-tones y sillas de rueda. Pasará

por Laguna Agua Dulce, el mal nombrado albañal en la desem-bocadura del Rio Regadillo.

En febrero del año 2011 co-menzaron la recolección o “boteo” que llego a unos ocho mil envases del popular refres-co de cola, de 2.5 y 3 litros, que luego de ser lavados con agua y cloro, cortados del tamaño de un tabique, fueron empo-rados a una construcción de cemento de 4x5 metros gracias al apoyo de un ingeniero y un albañil. Cubrieron el te-cho de láminas con cajas de leche mientras que por dentro agregaron casilleros de huevos dadas sus propiedades aislan-tes para disminuir el calor. El piso de cemento fue decorado con las tapas y aplicaron tra-zos de pintura sobre los envase logrando así una animada decoración que armoniza con las varas de palma que usaron

para las puertas y ventanas. Con lo sobrante reprodujeron el cuerpo humano y comen-zaron a elaborar unos sillones, y ahora se dedican a confec-cionar lapiceros, carteras, aretes y pulseras con material reciclado para reunir fondos que destinarán a la compra de equipo de cómputo.

Uno de los lugares que les apoyo con el boteo fue Suites Casamar junto con los aportes del restaurant La Selva y tienda San José, entre otros, según comento su gerente, Ulises Agatón, ya que dentro del ho-tel separan la basura orgánica e inorgánica y ésta en vidrio, aluminio y plástico.

Antes los llevaban al depósito Las Garrochas, ubicado sobre la carretera federal a Colote-

pec, donde se compacta PET en pacas de 100 kilos, pero han detenido esta labor por causas de fuerza mayor. Afortun-adamente podrán reactivarla gracias al servicio que ofrece Pablo Hernández Pacheco, quién recibe PET 1 (envases transparentes o de color verde de agua o refrescos) y HDP 2 (yogurt, shampo, detergentes) o acude a domicilios particu-lares cuando el acopio del ma-terial compactado pesa unos 15 kilos (una bolsa de basura de tamaño extra grande).

Luego de triturarlos en su máquina los lleva a Puebla donde se fabricarán hilos para ropa, escobas o vasos, entre otros objetos. Solo no acepta los que han contenido aceite de cocina o de carros porque

emanan un fuerte olor al ser procesados. Su negocio famil-iar funciona desde hace dos años todos los días y se ubica en colonia Marinero, casi jun-to a Cabañas Homero. Pueden contactarlo en los teléfonos 5823832 y 9541078252.

Complementando estas ac-tividades, vemos con agrado la aparición de basureros para residuos orgánicos-in-orgánicos en el aeropuerto y a la entrada de Puerto Angelito, así también la empresa ICA (Ingenieros Civiles Asociados) ha ubicado amplios botes de color gris para la recolección de inorgánicos. Esperemos que estas valiosas iniciativas tengan continuidad en lo futuro y surjan muchas más.

The cement floor was decorated with the lids and the exposed bottles lightly painted over resulting in a lively decor to go with the palm rods used for the doors and windows. With what was left over they reproduced a human body and began making armchairs. Now they are making pens, purses, earrings and bracelets with recycled material to raise funds to purchase a computer.

One of the places that supported them in their bottle drive was Casamar Suites, along with the restaurant La Selva and the store San Jose among others, ac-cording to hotel manager Ulises Agatón, since at the hotel they separate organic from non-organic garbage and the latter into glass, aluminum and plastic. They used to take the bottles to Las Garro-chas, located on the federal highway to Colotepec, where PET was compacted in 100-kilo bales, but were unable to continue. Fortunately they will be able to reactivate this practice thanks to the service offered by Pablo Hernandez Pa-checo, who receives PET 1 (transparent bottles or green water or pop bottles) and HDP 2 (yogurt, shampoo, deter-gents) and goes to private homes when the compacted material weighs around 15 kilos (an extra large garbage bag).

After shredding the bottles he takes them to Puebla where thread for cloth-ing, brooms and plastic cups, among

o t h e r o b -j e c t s , a r e m a n u f a c -t u re d . He only rejects bottles that have con-tained cook-ing or motor oil because these give off a strong smell when processed. His family business has operated on a daily ba-sis for two years and is located in the Marinero area, almost right next to Cabañas Homero. Complementing these activities are garbage cans for organic and non-organic waste at the airport and the entrance to Puerto Angelito, and that the company ICA (Ingenieros Civiles Asocia-dos) has put out large grey containers for non-organic material collection. We hope that these valuable initiatives are continued in the future and that many more will emerge.
