Power Cable Retrofit• Higher power density, lower
cooling requirement, oil free
• Retrofit of 400' (~120 m) of three–3-phase copper underground cables with a single 3-phase HTS underground cable
• Carries the same 2.4 kA total current at 24 kV (100 MVA) as the original copper cables and leaves 2/3 of conduit space available for future capacity
• Located within the Frisbie Substation of Detroit Edison, Detroit, MI
FCL: Benefits
• Compatible with existing protection devices
• Maximum allowable current adjustable
• Greater system flexibility - higher power
• Defer transmission/distribution upgrades
• Increased power reliability/quality
• Protects utility/customer equipment
• Uninterruptible power supply to gridLOS ALAMOS
FCL: Achievements
• Under construction: 17 kV, 45 kA, 765 MVA– Three phases– Handles 2 faults of 400 msec each, 15 s apart– Fault reduction of 80%– Tested 2000 A normal and 9000 A fault– Insulation Breakdown 110 kV– Cryocooler operation
