    Types of Electric Vehicles

    Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)they use only a batterypack and an electric motor to power the cars movement.Battery pack is charged by plugging into electric grid(Nissan Leaf).

    Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) All of theelectricity stored in the battery is generated by

    the internal combustion enginecannot plug

    into the electric grid (Toyota Prius).

    Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) Intended to run predominantly off of electricity, and theinternal combustion engine is present to extend the rangeof the vehicle, kicking in when the electricity from thebattery has been depleted (Chevy Volt).

    State and Federal Tax Credits

    Federal: Min. credit amount is $2,500 and up to $7,500, based on each vehicle's battery capacityand the gross vehicle weight. Through December 31, 2011, qualified plug-in electric vehicleconversions are also eligible for a tax credit for 10% of the conversion cost, not to exceed$4,000. 19

    South Carolina - Income tax credit equalling 20% of federal credits for PHEVs and BEVs;Battery Manufacturing Tax incentives: the taxable value of manufacturing machinery

    purchased for use at a renewable energy manufacturing facility may be reduced by 20% of theoriginal cost.

    North Carolina CFAT project would provide funding for HEV support, but as of October 2010,no funding is available.

    Tennessee - $2,500 tax rebate for first 1,000 BEVs sold in state and HOV exemption for low-emission vehicles; ECOtality is offering free EV supply equipment to anyone who purchases anEV in the Nashville, Knoxville, or Chattanooga areas.

    Florida -EVs are exempt from most insurance surcharges. Limited PHEV conversion rebates of$5,000 also available, EV charging equipment financing, hybrids can drive in HOV lane,Coulomb Technologies provides free EV supply equipment to anyone in the Orlando area whopurchases an EV

    Georgia -Income tax credit for up to 20% of BEV cost (max. $5,000) or 10% of conversion cost(max. $2,500). PHEVs not included; An income tax credit of 10% of the cost of EV supplyequipment (up to $2,500) is available to businesses so long as the equipment is accessible tothe public.

    they are able to store significantly more electricity.

    The typical consumer will be most likely to purchase a hybrid electric vehicle when the fuelsavings outweigh the additional cost of the vehicle. The EIA predicts that by 2030 fuelsavings will still be lower than the additional cost of the car unless gas prices reach $6 agallon.
