ellies. Babies. Families. Life. With the gift of her talent, a creative, fresh approach and her affinity for families, award–winning photographer Lindsay Calcerano captures beautiful moments in the lives of her sub-jects. When Lindsay heard about the worldwide photo competition for the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), she just had to participate. A former registered nurse whose many encounters included mak-ing a connection with new par-ents, prenatal couples, infants and children—were the very connections that served as the
platform for the launch of Lindsay Calcerano Photogra-phy. Lindsay was fortunate that a friend was a La Leche League Canada Leader, and with her friend’s good guidance and assistance, was able to secure the two participating families for photo session time, that ultimately resulted in the award-winning shot! The photo session took place at the Kitchener Public Li-brary—a very receptive and supportive environment for these families to have spent a few hours having some inti-mate and natural moments captured in such a beautiful way.
Lindsay is grateful for the participation of these two special families, and was thrilled to be able to provide each with the shots from the day. We are also additionally thrilled that Lindsay has gen-erously donated her prize to La Leche League Canada—now that’s a gift that gives twice. Public spaces. Tandem feed-ing. Two great Moms. And the sweetest infant and tod-dler participants—it doesn’t get any better than this. Thank you Lindsay for these wonderful gifts! good words
If a multinational company developed a
product that was a nutritionally bal-
anced and delicious food, a wonder
drug that both prevented and treated
disease, cost almost nothing to produce
and could be delivered in quantities
controlled by consumers’ needs, the
announcement of this find would send
its shares rocketing to the top of the
stock market. The scientists who devel-
oped the product would win prizes and
the wealth and influence of everyone
involved would increase dramatically.
Women have been producing such a
miraculous substance, breastmilk, since
the beginning of human existence….

THANKS AND GRATITUDE TO OUR VERY ACTIVE ST. JOHN’S GROUP FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND ENTHUSIASM IN THEIR FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES THAT DIRECTLY SUPPORT LA LECHE LEAGUE CANADA. ST. JOHN’S GROUP RAISED AN AMAZING $1,742.65. JANE BANNISTER FROM THE GROUP DESCRIBES THE ACTIVITIES WHICH LEAD TO SUCH GREAT SUCCESS.
We have had a couple moms who are really great at bringing the
pledges in! Some moms only collect pledges in person, others have
made personal pages on Canada Helps to get pledges from friends
and family across Canada and around the world. We have also been
lucky enough to receive donations from a bank where the husband of
one of the local lactation consultants works as part of their community
support.
We make the actual walk a great event for the whole family. It takes
place on the weekend at a local playground that is designed for children
under 5 and is right next to a small pond with a lovely path. We collect
the pledges and paperwork, chat and have fun for a little while, then
get everybody organized to walk around the pond. There are lots of
strollers and baby carriers, big siblings and pets! Then after the walk
(which is happily quite short to accommodate little toddler legs) we
do a pot luck picnic lunch with healthy snacks provided by families in
attendance. Before everyone leaves, we have plenty of prizes and
draw names from those who raised money, with the top fundraiser
always getting first pick! The prizes are all donated either by group
moms or local businesses who cater to young families. Then after some
more playing at the playground, everyone's ready to go home for a
nap!
We couldn't do it without the dedicated group moms who promote
the event, collect donations for prizes, and help with the registration
on the day. We also had a group dad as our official photographer last
year. St. John's has 2 LLL Leaders and usually 1-2 Leader Applicants, so
it is not a huge group to draw on to do activities outside of the regular
meetings. We are so happy that we have moms eager to lend a hand
for this important and fun event!

O ne of the hallmarks of our success as an national community has been our ability to reach into every corner of our country to pro-vide critical support and information to mothers. La Leche League Canada’s PSA, Breastfeeding Mothers — starring Little
Mosque on the Prairie’s Sitara Hewitt and a supporting cast of some wonder-ful Ontario moms and their babies — is one of our most treasured resources to help connect with those needing our help.
Please share this PSA with your networks far and wide and be a part of La Leche League Canada’s continued growth. Help us reach our goal of sup-porting every breastfeeding and expectant mother.
