BY JEFF FRANKEL Staff Writer Essex County officials gathered at Bloomfield’s Glendale Cemetery on a rainy Tuesday to unveil plans for a monument honoring veter- ans. While most of the cemetery, split on the Bloomfield-Belleville border, is owned privately, the county owns a portion. The improvements are great news for Belleville resident Donna Vangieri, who visits the grave of her father Salvatore every morning. The World War II Army veteran died in October 2010 but is not buried in the veterans’ section. Still, Vangieri did not want to see the area in the state it was previously. She said she called Belleville veter- ans’ advocate Joe Fornarotto, who got the ball rolling. “This is where my father lives now,” she said. Officials said the design is drenched in symbolism. The veter- ans’ area will resemble a sundial to represent the passage of time and to keep the memory alive of those who served. A 35-foot flag pole will stand at the center and the shadow will touch seven shorter 15-foot flag poles with flags representing the five main military branches, as well as the Army and Air national guards. A walking area around the flag poles will be constructed in granite and in the shape of a star will be in the middle to symbolize America and the Armed Forces. Near the center flagpole will be an “eternal garden” where ashes can placed. The existing walkways leading up to the center of the veterans’ area will be replaced with brown and red brick pavers symbolizing earth and blood. In addition, benches will be added.
