Elm Week 9 Timetable We are now in week 3 of May! Active May! Please take part in the active May challenge and let’s see how many Elms can get the Gold certificate. Also don’t forget to be doing your daily reading of 30 pages; it keeps our adventures alive! You have probably finished the revision books, so now is the time to use these amazing resources that we have below to keep our daily structure. Keep playing Sumdog, 15 minutes a day is a nice addition to the maths task each day, like our daily arithmetic at school. This week the theme is Volcanos! Such an exciting topic, which you can learn so much on. My friend loved learning about them so much, she went on to study volcanos at university so it is a good topic to explore! It is also nice to link our topic learning with our English. So I am looking forward to reading your information leaflets all about volcanos! Read about the types of volcanos first, and then try and locate each volcano and determine what type of volcano

it is. Please each of the volcanos listed below onto the map. This will help you understand where the active and

Thursday’s Science:

How to make a Volcano

Materials: • 10 ml of dish soap

• 100 ml of cold water

• 400 ml of white vinegar

• Food colouring

• Baking soda slurry (fill a cup about ½ with baking soda, then fill the rest of the way with water)

• Empty 2 litre soda bottle

Instructions: NOTE: This should be done outside due to the mess.

1. Combine the vinegar, water, dish soap and 2 drops of food colouring into the empty soda bottle. 2. Use a spoon to mix the baking soda slurry until it is all a liquid. 3. Eruption time! … Pour the baking soda slurry into the soda bottle quickly and step back!

How it Works: A chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda creates a gas called carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is the same type of gas used to make the carbonation in sodas. What happens if you shake up a soda? The gas gets very excited and tries to spread out. There is not enough room in the bottle for the gas to spread out so it leaves through the opening very quickly, causing an eruption!

Extra Experiments: 1. Does the amount of vinegar change the eruption? 2. Does the amount of water change the eruption? 3. Does the amount of baking soda change the eruption?

Friday’s RE:

Reflective starter

Watch the following video on you tube, think about what is making you feel happy today?

Do you have a celebration in your family coming up?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Lu41LulQos

Key message:

"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24

Eid, which marks the end of Ramadan, is observed by Muslims across the world. and marks one of the key events in the Islamic calendar. Ramadan started on April 23rd and will finish on Saturday May 23rd. This year families will only be able to celebrate in their homes.

How do children celebrate Eid al- Fitr? Watch the video from BBC newsround.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/36713429

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/religious-education-ks2-my-life-my-religion-

ramadan-and-eid-ul-fitr/zdv7pg8

THINK:

How will the celebration of Eid be different for children and families this year?

TASK 1 : Complete the crossword on the vocabulary of Eid

TASK 2: Make a fanoos (Eid lantern)

Friday’s P4C:

Starter: The starter is all about how we can connect things and how we can remember the connections if we know

the reason. This is similar to the shopping list game. Play this with your family and see how many you can make!

Today’s stimulus:

Discuss these points with your family:

o Who in these pictures has the most power?

o Can you give examples of ways in which

they have power?

o What does it mean to have power over

someone or something?

Activity:

Think of one person who has, in your view, a

lot of power. What would you most like to

ask them to do with that power? Pretend you

are that person and make a speech, to your

family, with the changes/actions you are

going to make and explain to them why- give

them that connection to remember!
