Elon UniversityNew Student Orientation
Spring 2017
Welcome to Elon!We are glad you chose to join us at Elon for Spring 2017! Whether you are coming to campus as a transfer student or a first-year student, our goal of New Student Orientation is to help make sure your transition is smooth and enjoyable.
As your Orientation Leaders, we understand that the college transition, no matter the stage, can be a challenge. When arriving in the spring, it may seem like everything is already moving so quickly, which can be a little overwhelming. We want to assure you that we are here to help you find your home at Elon.
During Orientation, you will begin to acclimate to Elon’s academic and intellectual climate and learn about our community’s values. The events on your Orientation schedule are designed specifically for transfer and spring admit students, who may be coming to Elon with prior experinces different than those of traditional first-year students.
We are here as Orientation Leaders because we are passionate about helping others bELONg at Elon! We look forward to getting to know you and seeing you around campus in the Spring!

What is the difference between meal dollars, food dollars, and Phoenix Cash? Meal dollars come with your meal plan and can be used to purchase anything in a dining location. The amount of meal dollars you have depends on the level of your meal plan. Food dollars need to be added to your Phoenix Card separately and can be used to pay for food in any on-campus dining loca-tion. Food dollars save you the cost of tax and give you a small discount on anything you buy. Phoenix Cash is a debit system in which you add money to your Phoenix Card to be used in on- and off-cam-pus retail locations.
Is it too late to get involved as a spring admit or spring transfer student? No! It’s never too late to get involved at Elon. The Spring Organization Fair takes place on February 9. Here, representatives from Elon’s hundreds of student organizations will be available to answer questions, and to sign you up for their first spring meeting. Phoenix Connect is the online hub for stu-dent organizations. You can use Phoenix Connect to search for events or organizations with a certain theme.
Who will be my academic advisor? If you haven’t declared a major, will be placed with a general academic advisor who will help you with registering for classes and making an academic plan. When you declare a major, you will be assigned a new advisor in your disciplinary area.
What do I do if I have transfer credits from a previous college or high school class?Make sure any college transcripts or AP/IB test scores from high school are sent directly to the Reg-istrar’s office at Elon. Even though Elon’s classes are worth four credit hours, you will still receive full credit for a course if it were worth three credits at another institution.
What is campus like on the weekends?Elon is busy on the weekends, with most students staying on campus for events and activities. There is plenty to do on the weekends, like catching a current movie, attending an a cappella concert, or participating in a service project. Be on the lookout for events at local buisness in the town of Elon like music at the Oak House or trivia at Fat Frogg.
What is New Student Convocation like? Should my family stay for it?Convocation is on Sunday, January 29th at 1:30pm in Whitley Auditorium. Convocation is a special event for new students and their families that marks the beginning of your time at Elon. Because fac-ulty, staff, and senior administrators like the President or the Provost will be present, you are encour-aged to dress in business casual attire. After the ceremony, you and your family will have time to take pictures on Elon’s beautiful campus before you go to your next Orientation session.
