The complete acetate version of Soldier Boy is closer to master take 15 than to any other released, completetake (Jordanaires have figured out the finally used ending by this take), but is recorded in a much fastertempo than any of the others. Since no other fast version has surfaced, it is likely that they tried the fastarrangement between takes 8-11. The pitch is about 3.7% too slow on the 'Colonel's Collection'representation of the acetate. Update 2003: 'Close Up' confirms take 10 (and pitch).

Make Me Know It take 3 and Soldier Boy take 1 on BMG's 'Essential' vol. 6 appear to have the mostconservative equalization of anything released from this session, whereas the outtakes on 'Fame and Fortune'and 'Today, Tomorrow and Forever' may have a slight midrange lift that could be difficult to spot without'Essential' 6 and the different releases of the masters to refer to.

Raising the amplitude above the 0 dB-limit does have its advantages in the digital domain, but the FTD take7 of Soldier Boy is mastered at least 1 dB louder than acceptable and dynamic range is slightly sacrificed onloud vocal parts. Make Me Know It take 11 on the FTD 'Fame and Fortune' is mastered more than 1 dB tooloud, even when accepting hard limiting now that BMG has entered the LOUDNESS RACE. Apart fromthis, the sound quality is very good and all the old problems of the early to mid-90' are considered solved.Takes 17-18 on the Box 'Today, Tomorrow and Forever' are much more carefully raised, resulting in verylittle dynamic range loss and virtually no added distortion.

Fame and Fortune runs about 0.4% too slow on '24 Carat Gold' (no big deal) and sounds a little brittle due tonoise reduction and slight lack of low frequencies. 'There's Always Me' volume 4 is much better.

The DCC release of 'Elvis Is Back' is considered a slightly better source of the masters with genuine signalall the way up to 21 kHz. The difference is small. BMG's 1999 release of 'Elvis Is Back' and the 60's Box arevery good as well. Some may like the ambient Japanese 24-bit release of 'Elvis Is Back' although (orbecause) it is loud, just too loud on a few songs.

Notes:Source update to follow. On the 'Peace in the Valley' box BMG added noise between 15-22 kHz to compensate for the poor filtersused on 'Amazing Grace' so they are definitely aware now that they screwed up the remastering in the firstplace. The 'Peace in the Valley' restoration does work; some of the high-end artifacts are masked. Still, theyneed to get back to the tapes to get it right. The Japanese paper sleeve edition of 'His Hand in Mine' appearsto be from a more conservative source although some songs are unnecessarily loud. Overall the Japanese CDhas slightly less high-end (between 2500-10000 Hz) than BMG's 'Peace in the Valley' remaster, but it'sprobably the latter that has been re-equalized. Older US/Japanese CD versions and the old RCA 7.5 ips reel-to-reel will be compared later to solve the eq. on this one.

The outtakes from this session on the FTD CD 'Easter Special' have been subjected to hard limiting, noclipping, just an amplitude raise about 6 dB(or 100%) above "what's possible" with compressed peaks toallow for it. +100% is too much without sacrificing dynamics.

The stereo outtake of Lonely Man (record version) on 'Movie Session Memories' seems to come from a hissy tape oran acetate and is poorly restored. Hopefully this has been released elsewhere.

The TCB CD 'The Complete Wild in the Country Sessions' is actually a pretty good source, although noisy, for thismaterial if the pitch is corrected and only one channel kept. It runs a little more than 5% too fast, which is a lot. TheLaurel LP 'In My Way', with only some takes, is even better. The Laurel double LP with the session is unfortunatelynot that flawless. On 'Elvis Meets Presley', noisy and 2% too slow, but great stereo versions without echo can befound of In My Way take 2 (first note missing) and Forget Me Never take 3 (master). Stay away from the "RadioRecordes Luxembourg" CD 'Wild in the Country Sessions' (PEWCCD129) since it has the worst kind of noisereduction!

It may appear that there was a left channel guitar overdub on Forget Me Never. This can be heard on the CDs 'ElvisFor Everyone' and 'Elvis Meets Presley', but not on 'Double Features'. This responding guitar is however present onthe releases that were mastered from the mono session tape. So it probably was removed for the 'Double Features'release rather than overdubbed in the first place.

The stereo version of Wild in the Country with overdubbed maracas was probably not overdubbed during the originalsession. Tunzi says it was overdubbed by Boots Randolph during the post production of the movie. Some lists thisoverdub version to be take 40, but that is surely because a "take 40" announcement by Elvis(!) had been poorlyadded to the overdubbed Wild in the Country on the bootleg LP 'From the Beach to the Bayou' and perhaps others.The "take 40" announcement was naturally a joke and is actually preceeded by an interrupted "take 15"announcement by the engineer. The announcement sounds like it's from a 1950's session and can probably beidentified.

Notes:The 1997 remastered Blue Hawaii CD has much more added echo and dynamic compression than the original mix.On 'Command Performances', the masters of Can't Help Falling in Love, Beach Boy Blues and Rock-a-Hula Babysound more natural as they seem to be remastered from the original mix.

Possible sources for this session are the 4 TCB LP's 'Blue Hawaii/The Complete Session' (TCB 21-23-3-61) and theLaurel 4-LP 'Blue Hawaii Box' (BPM 501-A). The latter is not as complete and seems to be slightly noise reducedand compressed. The TCB LP's have more noise and some pitch problems (>4% too fast), but it is the most completecollection and even has some takes in stereo.

Avoid the three "Trade Secrets" Blue Hawaii CD's, PECD056. There is not one single note of music on any of them.

The second edition only of "Alt. Golden Hits vol. 3" includes Beach Boy Blues take 1 in stereo right after Can't HelpFalling in Love. Thanks to Wolfgang Pesch for this find.

Notes:There is some confusion regarding the master of Angel. In one of Paul Dowling's interviews, Ernst Jorgensen saidthat the stereo master had survived because "they spliced Angel and A Whistling Tune back on one of the outtaketapes. I don't know why but they did.". This doesn't have to mean that the master was spliced from two takes, but it'sa guess. In "A Life in Music" it is still listed as take 7. It is unknown why a vocal overdub was recorded as well, or ifit was used for the (possibly) spliced master.

The Argentinian CD, "25 Grandes xitos"(74321 49055-2) includes Follow That Dream take 2 although the covernotes claim that it is the lost stereo master (take 6). The mistake can probably be blamed on the fact that BMG hadused take 4 on "Command Performances" without saying so, not even an "unreleased" note, and that version waslater listed as "take 2" in "A Life in Music".

Source update to follow. This session has been released in better quality than listed sources on the import CD 'KeepFollowing That Dream'(Kwimper Records 0761) and on the Czech CD 'Complete Follow That DreamSession'(Memory 2003). The Kwimper CD is a bit noise-reduced and edited, but seems to be mastered from a DATsource. Spectral plots of the Czech CD imply a MiniDisc source and it is about one or two generations down. Still, ithas more ambience than the Kwimper ditto and it isn't edited. So a third, "best of both worlds" release would still bewelcome...("The Complete Follow That Dream Session"(AR 10008) is slightly better than "What a Wonderful Life"(Ranwood1963). The CD "A Dream to Follow" hasn't been verified but ought to be identical to AR 10008. The takes on theAngel Records CD can be slightly improved by a high-lift and by stretching the pitch to 104.2%-104.9%.)
