Chronic Disease Self-Management Class The Chronic Disease Self-Management class in October and November was a great

success! The class learned about the ‘Self-Management Tool Box.’ This ‘Tool Box’ offers

many tools to help manage our chronic disease. A couple of the tools learned about: a) breathing techniques, which can be used to help to control pain; and b) action planning, which can help us improve how we care for ourselves.

A couple comments from participants: • ‘The book, ‘Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,’ was a great

resource.’ • ‘Good class. Also made me more aware of other disabilities people deal with.’

After taking the class, many who participated said the class has helped them to manage their chronic condition better. Most also said they would recommend the class to others.

“We suffer because we live in a fallen world. When sin entered the world, death entered. Chronic pain, illness, and disease are a form of death."

We will never understand why we suffer. But we can understand a couple truths from God’s word: ‘Suffering produces intimacy with God. (Job 42:5). ‘Suffering helps us to comfort others,’ (2Cor.1:3-5). ‘Suffering conforms us into God’s image.’ (Romans 8:28-29).

Season of Advent

“Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to

your holy name and glory in your praise.” (Psalm 106:47)

With this our theme verse, our “Together …” Advent series will help us celebrate as the

family of God the coming of his Son for our salvation. Each week will focus on a different activity for our “to-do list” that is centered on giving and sharing instead of on materialism.

Sunday Worship at 8:00 & 10:15 a.m.

December 10 Send Peace (Micah 5:2-5a) Beyond sending cards to loved ones this Advent season, we do all we can as the family of God to send peace to one another because the Prince of

Peace is on his way.

December 17 Share Joy (Zephaniah 3:14-20)

In this time when we share cookies and other treats with one another, we share joy with those around us that they might taste and see that the Lord is good to us through the birth of his Son.

At 10:15 worship, the Sunday School Christmas program “The Legend of the Candy Cane” will be

presented.

December 24 (morning) Wrap in Love (1 John 4:7-12)

In this season of hustle and bustle, we move from wrapping presents to wrapping people in love, as

Mary wrapped the Christ Child so lovingly in swaddling clothes.

Christmas Eve, December 24th

Three distinct Christmas Eve worship service.

4:00 PM Family Christmas A Star is Born

With playful presentation, this collection of skits, songs, and readings creates joyful worship and a fresh examination into the story of Jesus’ birth.

Ideal for children of all ages.

6:00 PM Traditional Christmas Be the Light

The theme of divine light shining in deep darkness is captured in this service of

candlelight, special music, and Holy Communion.

10:00 PM Traditional Christmas – With A Twist

Returning to the Manger This service highlights how we should continue to return to the manger during and beyond the Christmas season to marvel in the wonderful

event that happened there. Candlelight, worship band, and Holy

Communion.

“Simply Giving” Offering Cards Available

More than 57 ALC households use “Simply Giving” to give their offerings via electronic funds transfer. While this is a great way to give regularly and systematically, givers often would like something tangible to put in the offering plate. The Bible instructs that giving offerings is the central act of our worship of God, so being able to participate in the offering during worship is important to many “Simply Giving” givers, and it is a sign of the broad support of our ALC ministries.

Cards are available in a basket near the main sanctuary entrance that read “An Offering through Simply Giving.” If you give through “Simply Giving,” feel free to pick one up before worship and place it in the offering plate. If you do not use “Simply Giving,” you can sign up through the church office at any time.

REMINDER OF COMMUNION CARD

INSTRUCTIONS The synod requests a count of

American Lutheran members who commune at lease once during the year. It is therefore necessary to fill out only one Communion Card each year recognizing your having communed here at ALC. This can be done at any time during the year. If you have not filled out a card for 2017, please do so before the end of the year.

~ The Worship & Music Committee

Thank You from the Stewardship Committee

Because of your generosity, more than 159 households have already returned their Time &

Talent forms and/or Estimates of Giving forms for 2018, and they continue to come in. ALC

members who haven’t yet done so are encouraged to return their forms to the “Faith Chest” located in the narthex or to the church office; additional forms are available in those locations as well.

Thank you to all for your generosity in sharing from your heart!

Thank You for Your Generous Support!

Thank you American Lutheran members and friends for your generous support of our congrega-tional mission through prayer and the giving of time, talents and financial resources. Your love and commitment to Christ and your church enables us to carry on a wide and varied ministry. As we approach the end of our fiscal year, people often wonder where we are at when it comes to the budget. Here is a snapshot of our annual operating budget (“Box 1”) for January-November:

Actual Income $401,834 Expense 417,233 Net -$15,399

Though we do not send out personal giving statements until after the end of the year, some would like to have this information earlier to check their progress toward their estimate of giving for the year or for planning year-end giving. Please know that you can ask the church office (376-5264) at any time for a printout of your personal giving.

Your generous gifts during December will enable us to accomplish our planned ministry for 2018. Thank you again for your generosity as we carry out the mission Christ calls us to do together.

- Your Budget & Finance Committee, Stewardship Committee and Church Council
