Wabi Sabi was back at The Old Town Hall in Richards Land-ing, drawing hundreds of locals, summer residents and people from the surrounding areas to the fine crafts and exhibition sale. Work from 20 artisans were featured,

both from the Wabi Sabi committee as well as guest artists, so if you’ve been in years past it’s not the same lineup as year in and year out.

Of course the sculptures out front were back, as many posed with them for photos. Inside, there was a wide variety of items from stained glass and puddingstone creations, to decorative bowls and baskets, quilting, wood working and so much more. One of the art pieces that caught our eyes was a ceramic purse, which looked and almost felt like a real purse, until you felt it a little more closely and realized it was not real at all. It seems

Indeed there was a lot of art on display, with items for sale quickly replaced as items were bought and buyers continued to make their way through the 3 day event that has become a summer staple at the town hall.

Summer has progressed quite quickly and we are now at the end of our 6 part series. Join us this Thursday at 2 pm for the final installation of Old Time Thursday as we tour the Log School. Upon researching the log school for this column I decided that the information I was going to provide was very similar and decided to contribute this Museum Moment from many years ago. Former curator Cindy Crawford so eloquently wrote about this humble log structure that it deserves a second read.

The log schoolhouse, was moved to the St. Joseph Island Museum grounds in 1987. It has a long and interesting history. Built in 1877, over the years it served as a schoolhouse, council chambers for a newly organized township of St. Joseph, Sunday school and private residence. The log school was built at a farm called Westfield, owned by Willie Rains at Sailors’ En-campment.

According to Historic St. Joseph Island written by Joseph and Estelle Bayliss in 1938, the first St. Joseph Township meetings took place at the school. It served as an alternative meeting place of then Reeve John Richards’ home wasn’t a convenient location.

In its original state, the log school was a primitive envi-ronment. Miss Alice Sterling who lived at the home of WW Rains, was the first teacher to be paid from public funds. Students according to the Bayliss’ book, sat on benches without backs and received their lessons on a solitary blackboard. The children were responsible for making their own notebooks, using brown paper with foolscap inside. The curriculum consisted of reading, writing, arithmetic, spelling and geography. The latter course must have proven a difficult lesson to grasp as there weren’t any globes or maps.

The log school served the community until the C Line School was built at the junction of the C Line and A Lines in 1885. This new school was deemed to be more centrally located and according to a letter written by Joseph Bayliss in 1944, it could be reached by roads that had not existed when the log school was built sev-eral years earlier.

The log school was eventually converted into a resi-dence and over the years served as a cottage or home to the following people, Gussie Hursley, Mary Dell Race, Peter and Mary Fox, Adam and Annie Fox, Archibald and Addie Smith, Aubrey and Alice Court, Murray and Phyllis Smith and the Erik and Maria Smith. Helen Smith Powis (daughter of Archibald and Addie) remem-bers residing at the log school in 1929 and has gracious-ly recorded some of the history on the log school and its occupants. Upon building their new home, Erik and Marie gave the log house to the museum for preserva-tion.

It is rather ironic that a log school is once again located on this piece of property, many years ago, before the building of the brick school in 1933, a log school once sat where the museum centre courtyard is today.
