Lesson OneGod Made a Wonderful Home

It’s very likely that your children have heard the Creation story more than once. Some have learned that God is the powerful Creator who simply spoke and caused the wonders of his creation to appear. They may have learned that he made all things for his glory. Some learners may already feel a sense of delight at the beauty and design of all God made. Also, they may have been taught God’s plan for his creation and salvation.

Still, there are many more Bible truths for them to grasp about Creation. This week they will focus on the world as the home God prepared for the living things he made. When God spoke, the shapeless mass of water and darkness became an inviting world of rivers, seas and land. He placed the sun, moon and stars in the sky to rule the times and the seasons.

And then God filled his world with creatures that live in water, with birds that soar across the expanse of the sky and with innumerable species that populate the dry land. The world became home for garden spiders that make sticky webs, jumping kanga-roos that feed on grasses, fish that dart among coral reefs and sharp-eyed eagles with bulky nests on cliffs or in trees. Everything God made was good, and every creature had a home that was uniquely suited for it.

Finally, God’s good world was ready for the crown of God’s cre-ation—man and woman. They were the most important creatures to have a home in God’s world, the ones to whom God would show his special love and favor.

As the quarter progresses, the children will learn about the first fam-ily and what happened when sin entered the world. They will also study family stories from the book of Genesis.

Home and family life will be highlighted as the children focus on this quarter’s theme, “Living Together”—what the Bible says about who we are in God’s family and how the people in his family ought to live. Pray that God will give you wisdom and help you model his love as you teach his Word to the special children in your care.

Optional Memory Work

Help the children memorize Psalm 104:24, the first memory verse this quarter. Mount TA 1a Verses poster on a focus wall. Or you may just post this week’s verse, Psalm 104:24 (tear along the perforated line), on TA 1a Memory Work poster (the gray poster) and add each new verse as the children learn them. Use pushpins or a glue stick to secure the verse on the poster.

If you wish to teach additional memory work, Psalm 69:34a (in sidebar) is in keeping with this lesson’s truths and aims.

Have the children make a large circle and hold hands. Tell them to pretend that they are a big, round world. Now have them recite Psalm 104:24 two or three times. Have the children extend their hands into the circle when they say “the earth is full of your creatures.”

Then show children the Psalm 104:24 door hanger. Tell them they can use it during the week by hanging it on a door where they will see it. This will remind them to go over the memory verse. Give each child a door hanger at the end of the lesson.

If you have time, pass out the door hangers and scissors so the children can cut along the dotted lines to cut out the center. Otherwise, tell the children they will cut them at home to hang on their doors.

3 Memory Verse 5–10 minutes

But there is something very special I want to tell you. The whole world that God had made was to be a perfect home for his most wonderful creation—you and me! We can be very thankful for the world God made and for the homes he has given us to live in. Ask Have any of you memorized questions and answers from First Catechism? Let me ask three questions and see if you can answer them. See sidebar for questions and answers.

Teaching TipIf you have a larger class and need more pictures than are on TA 1b, cut out pictures from old issues of nature mag-azines. Look for oceans, land forms, trees and plants, fish, birds and animals. You could also borrow library books with large, colorful pictures. Or, if you are artistic, use colored chalk or markers to illustrate the lesson as you teach.

Ahead of time, separate TA 1b Animal Homes and place the cards on the table (see teaching tip in sidebar for more ideas). Put the fish with the anthill, the camel with the nest, the ant with the ocean and the bird with the oasis. Then ask:

Long, long ago there were no ants or birds. There were no anthills or nests. There were no oceans, no mountains, no trees. There were no people. But God was there, and he created every-thing. He made the heavens and the earth when nothing was there but him.

The first thing God did was to make light and darkness. He just spoke, and day and night appeared. Ask Why do we need day-light? (to get up and work and play) Why do we need darkness? (to rest and sleep)

God had made day and night, but the earth was not yet ready to be a good home. So God continued to make it ready.

The Bible tells us that God made the sky. Now the earth had light and darkness, day and night, and wonderful fresh air and blue sky. What would God create next?

He made the land and the seas. He caused grass, vegetables, beautiful flowers and useful trees to grow on the dry land.

Ask How are trees useful to us? (We use wood to build houses and furniture. We eat fruit from trees. We like to sit in the shade of a tree on a hot day.) Say Yes, God made these for us to use and enjoy!

Then God made the sun to warm the earth and help the plants grow and make food. God also made the moon and the stars to shine during the dark nights.

God was pleased with all that he had made. Now the beauti-ful, rich earth was ready to be a home for living creatures. So God made fish and other water creatures, and filled the skies with birds of every kind. Ask the children to name some fish, water creatures and birds.

God gave each sea creature just what it needed to live in the ocean. He gave fish bodies that glide easily through the currents. He gave them gills to get oxygen from the water. God also made birds in a special way so that they could fly high in the sky or from tree to tree. He made their bones hollow and he gave them feathers.

When a man builds a house, he must first have wood, nails, glass, and many other things. If he does not have something out of which to make it, he cannot build a house. But God made the world out of nothing at all.

Hand out copies of At Home 1, pencils and crayons or markers. Read aloud the title and directions to God’s Creatures and engage the children in conversation about the pictures as they work. Emphasize praising God for the good world he has made and for making everything for his glory.

In The Right Home, read the sentences aloud. The number and color of the blanks should help children find the correct answers: Genesis, light, air, seas, trees, sun, birds, animals, home. Then reread all the sentences. If time permits, let the children turn each sentence into a prayer of praise.

Hand out SA 1 poem coloring sheet. Read the poem aloud to the children and have them follow along. If time permits, let them begin to color the pictures.

4 Activities 10–15 minutes

Lead children in singing the well-known praise song “This Is the Day.” The words and music are found on page 5 of the Songbook. After singing the song once through, instead of singing This is the day . . . change the words to This is the world . . . and then This is the home. . . . Keep the rest of the words as they are. Encourage children to make motions or clap as they sing, and include musical accompaniment if possible. (The Younger Elementary Vol. 1 CD is available from GCP at 800-695-3387.)

To conclude the lesson, have volunteers pray the sentence below, inserting their own choice of animal and home. (Be sensitive to those children who are shy or have never prayed out loud.) For example:

“God, I praise you for making ________ that live in _______.” (Name an animal and its home; for instance, rabbits that live in holes in the ground.)

After each child has had an opportunity to say a praise prayer, you close in prayer, thanking God for the wonderful world he made, for the homes he made for his creatures and for the homes he has given us to live in.

Hand out a Psalm 104:24 door hanger to each child and make sure the children have their At Home 1 papers and SA 1 poem coloring sheets. Remind them to show the papers to their parents and to ask their par-ents to read the poem with them.

To praise God for the world he made for us and all his creatures, and to thank him for our homes.

How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made

them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Psalm 104:24

God made people in his image to love and serve him, live in

families and take care of his world. (Genesis 1–2)

To thank God for making us in his image, giving us families and making us responsible to him.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were

still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, their sin spoiled God’s perfect creation,

but God in his goodness promised to send the Savior. (Genesis 3)

To understand why sin spoiled all people and to learn what God

promised to do about sin.

Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his.

Psalm 100:3a

To know what it means to be a sinner, and to thank God for

sending Jesus to take away our sin.

To recognize that our heavenly Father will always be merciful to us, and to thank him for loving

and saving us.

As sinners, people hate, harm and destroy, but God kept his promise to send the Savior who would take

away their sin. (Genesis 4)

God was merciful to Noah and his family by saving them from the flood. God made a covenant with Noah, and

Noah responded by thanking God. (Genesis 6–9)

God made a covenant with Abraham and blessed him.

Abraham trusted and obeyed God. (Genesis 11–12, 15)

To learn what Abraham did to show he trusted God, and to name ways we can show we trust God.

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for

our sins. 1 John 4:10

To learn to trust God to provide for and protect our families, as Abraham did.

Abraham trusted God to provide for and protect his family and Lot’s. God did so because of his mercy and

his covenant with Abraham. (Genesis 13, 14, 18–19)

God kept his promise to Abraham and Sarah by giving them a son, Isaac. Abraham showed his faith by trusting

God and obeying even when it was hard. (Genesis 16, 17–18, 21, 22)

To understand that God kept his promise to us as he did to

Abraham, and sent Jesus to be the sacrifice for our sins.

To recognize that God works out his purposes in our lives as he did in Isaac’s, and to ask God to for-

give our sins and bless our families.

The members of Isaac’s family schemed and lied to get what they

wanted, but God worked his purposes in their family in spite of their sin.

(Genesis 24, 25, 27)

To understand that God works in our lives as he did in Jacob’s, giving us faith, changing us and

taking care of us because he chooses us to be in his family.

God kept his promise to be with Jacob by protecting him, prospering him, giving him faith and changing his

character. (Genesis 28–33)

To recognize that God is in control of our lives and to thank

him for taking care of us.

God planned happy and unhappy events in Joseph’s life to accomplish his will.

Joseph trusted and obeyed God in good and bad times. (Genesis 37, 39–41)

people, including us, to carry out his purposes.

To remember God’s forgiveness, grace and guidance to members of his Old Testament family, and their faith

uses them to carry out his purposes. (Hebrews 11; Acts 7)

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be
