Emilson YMCA& Laura’s Center for the ArtsOn Wednesday, February 13th our Mill Pond branch

became the Emilson YMCA and Laura’s Center for

the Arts in honor of Herb and Paulie Emilson and their late daughter Laura Riekert.

New Aquatics Policy:

TEST * MARk * PROTECTAt the South Shore YMCA we are committed to keep-

ing all patrons as safe as possible while swimming. As

such we will be implementing a new protocol in our

Aquatics Department called Test * Mark * Protect. All

children under 14 will be given a swim Test. Based on

the swim test, or their age, individuals will be given a

colored bracelet to Mark what areas of the pool they

may use. Using this system will help us Protect the

children who use our pool.

Swim test results will be stored in our system and members will receive a colored

membership tag, to bring with them to the pool to receive their bracelet. This

will allow a convenient way to know each child’s color and swim ability each

time they arrive at our pool or the Y. Swim tests will not need to happen every

time you come to swim unless the individual or child wants to try for a higher

level or the swim ability has changed drastically.

For questions or more detailed information regarding this program,

please contact the Aquatics Department:

COMPETITIVE SWIMMING — YOUTH/TEEN

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENTNURTURING THE POTENTIAL OF EVERY CHILD AND TEEN

south shore ymca strypers swim team“We don’t want to create champions, but to create an environment in which champions are inevitable.”

Experience: Novice to national level Locations: Emilson YMCA and Quincy Branches

Age Junior Squad – The Age Junior group transitions swimmers toward the competitive Age Group program. In addition to increased

athleticism, swimmers will also learn the importance of training in relation to performance.

Age Group Squad – The Age Group is a highly important developmental training group in the SSYS swimming program. This squad is a

key transition point as swimmers move from a foundation of swimming principles toward the expectations of the senior training program.

Swimmers can expect to be in this group for a number of seasons. A comprehensive dry land program is introduced at this level.

Senior Squad – The Senior Squad in the SSYS program is the second highest level

training group available. The aim of this group is to qualify and be highly competitive

in New England Swimming YMCA, USA and MIAA Championships meets.

National Squad – This group represents the highest level of practice and coaching

available with the South Shore YMCA Strypers. The aim of this training group is to be

highly competitive at both the YMCA and USA National Championship level.

• The SSYS swim team spring/summer long course season runs

April 1 to July 27 (17 weeks)

• Tryouts for NEW participants (by appointment) at the Emilson YMCA and Quincy

SOuTH SHORE YMCA LOCATIONS

germantown Neighborhood CenterSince 1982, the Germantown Neighborhood Center (GNC) has been providing critical support services, needed resources, programs

and workshops to the youth and families of the Germantown and neighboring communities of Quincy. Located within one of Quincy’s

largest public housing developments, the GNC serves a community of mostly low-income, single-parent households and works with

support and guidance from the South Shore YMCA to identify and develop strategies to address community needs.

Our youth programs give kids a safe environment where they can grow and learn positive values that they will carry with for a life-

time. Women’s programs are designed to get women out of the house and build relationships with other women who are in the same

situation. Childcare and dinner are often provided. Women are encouraged to bring the whole family while mom engages in skill-build-

ing workshops with other women. Our Family Lifelong Learning programs encourage literacy and educational achievement through

our GED programs, or Teen Mentoring programs. Our food pantry serves residents all over the City of Quincy with food assistance.

The Holiday Assistance program lifts a burden off the shoulders of many families during a time that is even more difficult financially.

We are constantly trying to raise more money, add more programs, and do all that we can to help. Our programs and services work

toward giving community members the skills, confidence, and resources to take action and improve their lives.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYgIVINg BACk AND PROVIDINg SuPPORT TO OuR NEIgHBORS

“For my husband the Y has been a life-changing experience. Unemployment can be hard

on a family, especially if you are actively looking for work. The Y has been a stress reliever

for my husband and our entire family.”

You may know of people in our community whose experiences are similar. Having an impact like this is one reason

that the South Shore YMCA is investing in a new facility in Quincy. The new Y will provide an expanded Early Learning

Center where working families can have peace of mind that their children are safe and thriving, a health & well-being

center for all ages, teen programming, and vibrant spaces where families can participate together in healthy activities.

The Y’s collaborations with other health care providers will make this facility a focal point for community well-being.

Construction has begun, and we expect to complete the new facility by August of 2013. Follow the progress on our

website and learn how you can help the Y lead the way in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Our Capital Campaign Community Phase is underway and provides opportunities for naming places within the building

and outside on the grounds. If you wish to make a donation, contact Bruce Haas at 617-479-8500, ext. 249 or

[email protected].

Annual Support Campaign

Please participate in the Community Appeal and pledge your support to the campaign to ensure that all people will

have many possibilities! The goal of the Campaign is to raise $1.5 million dollars to provide financial assistance to

children, families and individuals so they can access South Shore YMCA

membership, programs and services. Our theme this year is: People,

Possibility, Promise – connecting people, providing endless possibilities,

and a promise to continue to build healthy, confident, caring people and

communities. Pledge today! www.ssymca.org/donations

Taste of the South Shore has expanded to include – a Toast of the South Shore!March 28, 2013

Join us at this festive annual event that brings the best of the area’s restaurants — and now winery and breweries —

together for an evening of celebration and fundraising. The Y will honor a special member of the Y family and raise

funds to “Send a Kid to Camp”. Reserve your tickets for this sell out event at ssymca.org/donations.

Volunteers Needed

Would you like to join us in helping others? Volunteer. We are looking for people that would like to serve on a

committee for the Annual Support Campaign. For more information, please contact, Mary Orne, Director of Annual

Giving, at [email protected] or 781-829-8585 ext. 306.
