Communicating is the essence of who I am. From when I could barely pronounce words with more than two syllables to my well polished post-graduate self, I have spent my life working to master all things involving communication. I grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida, but quickly migrated to the northeast in order to study at Emerson College. When I’m not focusing on curriculum based work, I spend my time pursuing passions including: publishing, social justice advocacy, politics, art and design. I most enjoy spending time with my family and friends, volunteering, exploring new england, finding delicious places to eat , going to local concerts and art exhibits or finding new neighborhoods and the people who live within them. I have a passion for helping people get to a place where they

can help themselves; whether it be inviduals, organizations or small businesses. I find it most fulfilling to help people succeed. I am hoping to pursue a career that allows me to pursue Communication Strategy, Interactive New Media (including Social media, Design and Web presence), and Fundraising//Development. I work best for task oriented teams that look to impact the target community in the most positive and efficient way possible.

Joining the Community Works team is more of a commitment than a typical internship in that you quickly realize the impact and investment the members have on the Community. I found a passion for postive impact through large scale fundraising while still maintaining an attitude that is inclusive. The office itself is run by about 5 people, so I am able to voice concerns and play an active role in the organization. I have worked on a variety of projects including branding, event planning, email marketing, and web presence.

Marketing Intern

During the summer of 2011 I wanted to become more familar with the technical side of the web world. Using the skillset that I had, I worked in the marketing department under Cathie Briggette on a variety of projects including planning, development and implementation of all Touch Ahead Software’s marketing strategies, marketing communications and public relations, both internally and externally. In addition I met with a software developer on a weekly basis to gain an understanding of Customer Relationship Management systems and back-end support necessary to successful implement them with private equity and venture capital firms. While this was extremely out of the realm of anything I had done in the past, it offered me a fresh experience and a wealth of knowledge about the tech world. In addition I managed the Touchahead blog, writing tri-monthly posts explaining the inside scoop from the techies to the public.

Communications and Development Intern

During my time at NIPNLG I worked under Pamela Goldstein, who has worked in non-profit development, communications, and capacity-building for over twenty years, she held senior development positions at the international anti-poverty agency Oxfam America. I worked with her to compile and design a 24 page annual report commemorating the 40th anniversary of NIPNLG. I did so using Adobe Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. In addition I met weekly with the staff and worked on projects including data collection and branding research. This position taught me the ins and outs of working with donors, board members and legal staff to promote meaningful philanthropy that facilitates social change.

Editorial AssistantFashion Boston is a small team with a large

portion of the editorial and photography content produced free-lance. This allowed me in Fall 2009 to play an exciting role in editorial production. I worked closely with the editor-in-chief, Alexandra Hall and handled a variety of tasks from organizing samples, writing short pieces, captions etc. to copy editing and transcribing. This style of publication was very different from anything I had worked for in the past. I was also able to work on social media presence and generating interest in the publication.

About Betsey Johnson

In 1978 Betsey Johnson launched her wacky designs with cartwheels and passion keeping her style strong. Today there are over sixty-five freestanding Betsey Johnson stores, distribution in over 2000 specialty boutiques and an established wholesale business in both domestic and international markets. Products are also stocked in department stores worldwide including Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Vakko (Turkey), Holt Renfrew (Canada), Galeries Lafayette (Dubai) as well as distribution in Japan.

coEditor-in-Chief

emily grace dyess // 35

As a freshman in college I was determined to work for em magazine, Emerson College’s only lifestyle magazine. With hard work and beneficial circumstances I became coEditor-in-Chief by the spring semester of the same year. I worked alongside a staff of 100+ students day in and day out to produce a product that I could be proud of, a 76-page print publication covering sections including Emerson, Looks, Features, Relationships, and Entertainment. I continued working as coEditor-in-Chief and transitioned em magazine through a variety of different styles and leaders. After three issues including The Rebel Issue, The Etiquette Issue and Seven Deadly Sins, I transitioned to the position of web director for one year in order to fully understand future of the industry and editorial process.

“Today we have a special vistor,” Tulasi Srinivas quiets her Gender in a Global perspective class. In walks an average Emerson student, Kaylee Castroverde, 5’9 dressed non-descript, black t-shirt, shorts and a hat. “Hey could you hold on one second,” asks Kaylee Castroverde. She rips off the black shirt, hat and reveals a pink v-neck, pink long hair and an anything but an average explanation. This visual transformation quickly quieted a room of 45. After only a few months of coping with this transition herself, Kaylee Castroverde vocalizes the pains and trials of living in an out of body experience day-to-day. For Kevin Castroverde the traditional division between pink ribbons, bows, dolls, ballet performances, princesses and little league, G.I Joe and superheroes was as isolating as being trapped on a desert island. Growing up in Memphis, Tennessee Kevin Castroverde always wanted to play and dress like the girls but never knew exactly why he wanted to, just that he did. It was a moment on the during school that he realized this wasn’t going away. “At seven years old, on the playground, was when I started to question things, but it wasn’t a fleeting thought. It was something that consumed me everyday,” said Kaylee Castroverde, Writing for Television As Castroverde grew up, his confusion with identity led to constant ridicule from his peers, calling him names, teasing often resulting in him being alone in group activities. “I used to always try and cross the line and man, did I get picked on. I was always different. I would always play by myself because I didn’t feel as though I fit into either group,” said Castroverde. “In 6th grade I was that kid, I was an easy target, I was the boy who cried as a reaction to the teasing which is a very feminine thing to do.” This lead to a painful educational experience. Little did he know it then, but Castroverde suffered from what doctors call gender identity disorder, a physical and psychological conflict that affects thousands of people in the United States, who usually keep it a secret. Gender Identity Disorder is when the physical and psychological identity of a person conflict, one situation, a person with the genitalia of a man who identifies as a women. Around the age of 13, Castroverde took a strong interest in computer sciences and spent all of his free time working with computers.

“At this point I started questioning things but it wasn’t until years later that I finally had access to it. I found a passion in computers and found comfort in technology and solidarity. If I was alone no one could pick on me, no one could hurt me. So I was home-schooled from eighth grade to twelfth grade.”Castroverde attended the University of Memphis and studied Japanese. He took the opportunity to study abroad while attending the University of Memphis and spent time in Nagoya Japan. While in Japan he was able to fully immerse himself in the culture but realized despite being so happy with where he was and what he was doing, he could not be truly happy while living as a male. He returned home and ultimately had the courage to confide in his mom, who had independently raised him and his sister. “When I first told my mom, she thought I was gay. I got that all the time, people just assumed I was gay, there was no question about it. The sexuality aspect is different, gender being your social role in society based on sex,” Castroverde said.During the time of his transition to Emerson College, He also began the transitional process of changing his gender from man to women going by the name Kaylee, officially changing all legal and school documentation. Walking down Boylston street was one of the few places Kaylee finally felt comfortable with who she was. Each day she takes horomones to further the transition from the sex she was born as to the gender and sex she really is. She received clearance to begin hormone therapy in December of 2008 from her psychologist.“As you study Gender in a Global perspective recognize that gender is social, sex is biological and sexual preference is who you chose to be with,” Castroverde explains to the class. She then went on to play a short film she produced in Fall 2008 , The Story of Mr. Platypus, which works as a metaphor explaining in simple terms the emotion and confusion that Gender Identity Disorder can cause. A playtpus believes he is a duck but all of his friends tease him telling him, no you are a platypus. “I’ve never once been teased, mocked or picked on at Emerson,” said Kaylee. She now participates in many awareness activities such speaking to classes and hosting events in which she discloses her old identity.
