We have established relationships with leading industry suppliers which ensure that our onsite training facilities are stocked with the latest products, and we also delivering training in current state-of-the-art techniques.

We enable the Hair, Beauty and Floristry industries to have a training capacity to up skill their younger, less experienced workforce, and to develop and retain their experienced valuable team members.

Hairdressing Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a work based training programme which allows employees to complement the skills that they learn, develop and use within the workplace with theoretical knowledge gained at college.

Training outcomesOn completion employees will achieve:• an NVQ in their chosen occupation (NVQ Level 2 for

Intermediate Apprenticeships and NVQ Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships)

• Functional Skills in English and maths• workplace Health and Safety knowledge• personal learning and thinking skills• employer rights and responsibilities.

AssessmentAssessment is undertaken in the workplace and at college. Employees should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence.

Hairdressing Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Code: B1130 Fees: 1 Start Date: Throughout the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This training is aimed at employees who are already in full time employment in a commercial salon and who would like to gain an NVQ 2 (or equivalent) in hairdressing or barbering.

Who should attend?Employees must be employed for more than 30 hours in the hairdressing industry, and successfully complete the initial assessment process. Essential attributes are the ability to communicate with all levels of staff and types of clients, appropriate personal presentation, and a willingness to work flexibly.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionEmployees may progress on to the NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) qualification in their chosen career and the Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing or Barbering. On completion of this training employees will be able to gain employment in their chosen career path either in a salon or as a freelance stylist or barber.

Hairdressing or BarberingAdvanced ApprenticeshipCourse Code: B1131 Fees: 1 Start Date: Throughout the year Level: 3

If your employee is aged 24 or over there is no government funding available for this course. However 24+ Advanced Learning Loans are available please see Training for all Industries page 10 for further details.

What is the training about?This apprenticeship is aimed at employees already in employment as a stylist or barber. Employment in a salon is essential and employees must have a flexible working attitude.

Who should attend?Employees must be employed for more than 30 hours in the hairdressing or barbering industries, and successfully complete the initial assessment process. Employees must have already achieved an NVQ 2 (or equivalent) in Hairdressing or Barbering or have five years’ equivalent experience across the technical units.

Duration18 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionEmployees may wish to progress on to Higher Education or complete a teaching certificate. Employees will be able to open their own business, work in supervisory position within a salon, work on the cruise lines or as a technician within the hairdressing or barbering industry.

Barbering Level 2 Award

Course Codes: C0640 Fees: £700 Start Date: 28 January 2014

What is the training about?A combination of theory and practical training to give employees information and knowledge, alongside a hands on approach to barbering.

Who should attend?Employees should have good communication skills, enthusiasm and commitment.

Training outcomesUnits include: health and safety, client consultation, shampoo and conditioning, cutting men’s hair, cutting facial hair to shape, and creating patterns in hair.

DurationOne evening per week for 19 weeks.

AssessmentExams and continuous assessment.

ProgressionEmployees can become junior barbers within a salon or progress to a Level 2 Hairdressing Diploma.

Bridal Hair Level 3 Certificate

Course Codes: C0628 Fees: £450 Start Date: 25 March 2014

What is the training about?This training will provide further insight into the design and construction of bridal hair creations.

Who should attend?Employees who would like to learn the skills to be able to create bridal hair styles and how to attach ornamentation securely. Completing this training will broaden your employee’s portfolio.

Training outcomesThe training will include all the relevant Health and Safety relating to bridal hair styling. Practically employees will cover the various ways of preparing the hair ready for styling, the products available to use, and the types of ornamentation available and how to attach it securely. Styles will include rolls, pleats, knots, twists, plaits, curls and woven effects.

DurationTwelve weeks, 3 hours per week.

AssessmentContinuous assessment and exams.

ProgressionOn completion of this training employees could progress on to a Level 3 hairdressing qualification, depending on their prior experience, or a Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Makeup.

Creating Hair for Proms College Certificate

Course Code: C0637 Fees: £150 Start Date: 19 November 2013

What is the training about?Employees will develop the necessary skills to be able to create styles for proms and special occasions.

Who should attend?Employees should have at least a basic knowledge of hair styling.

Training outcomesStyles and techniques covered on the course will include how to create a French pleat, pyramid of curls and barrel curls, twists - two strand and flat, knots, three strand plaits, fish tail plaits and on scalp plaits. Learners will also look at curling hair using straighteners, tongs and curling wands.

DurationThree hours per week for four weeks

AssessmentNone.

ProgressionEmployees can progress on to the Level 2 Basic Long Hair course or a full-time Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing.

Creating Patterns in Hair Level 2 Certificate

Course Code: C0632 Fees: £100 Start Date: 24 October 2013

What is the training about?This certificate involves designing and creating patterns in the hair and on the face. Employees will learn how to create both full and partial head designs using and adapting a variety of cutting techniques.

Who should attend?Delegates must be competent and experienced in barbering.

Training outcomesDelegates will learn how to use scissors, clippers and razors to create designs and shapes on the head and face. Delegates will learn how to recognise and consider hair growth patterns, density, length, baldness, skin disorders and scarring, in the creation and design of patterning.

DurationOne day.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionDelegates can further their professional development by progressing on to level 3 or 4 barbering qualifications, depending on their other qualifications.

Long Hair Techniques (Basic) Level 2 Certificate

Course Codes: C0624 Fees: £440 Start Date: 17 September 2013

What is the training about?This training is for those employees who would like to learn the skills to be able to create basic long hairstyling techniques.

Who should attend?Employees could be salon juniors or trainees who need to boost their confidence and skills in long hair styling.

Training outcomesThe training will involve the relevant Health and Safety considerations when dealing with long hair. The practical skills will include two and three strand plaits, twisting, French pleats, rolls, buns and the use of ornamentation for different occasions to include weddings and proms.

DurationEight weeks, 3 hours per week.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

Long Hair Techniques (Advanced) Level 3 Certificate

Course Codes: C0623 Fees: £440 Start Date: 19 November 2012

What is the training about?This training gives further insight into long hairstyling techniques and provides employees with a range of skills to use in their workplace.

Who should attend?Employees should have completed a Basic Long Hair Techniques training or have a Level 2 hairdressing qualification.

Training outcomesThe training will involve the relevant Health and Safety considerations when dealing with long hair. The practical skills will include knotting, sculpting, weaving, barrel curls, multiple strand plaiting and the use of ornamentation for different occasions to include weddings and proms.

DurationEight weeks, 3 hours per week.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionOn completion of this training employees may wish to progress on to a level 3 hairdressing qualification or Apprenticeship depending on their prior experience.

Beauty Therapies

Apprenticeships

Course Code: B1132 Fees:1 Start Date: Throughout the year Level: 2 What is the training about?This apprenticeship is aimed at anyone who is already employed in a commercial beauty salon or nail bar and wishes to gain a qualification in beauty therapy or nail technology.

Who should attend?Employees working within the beauty industry for at least 30 hours per week and who have successfully completed an initial assessment process. A mature, caring personality with the ability to communicate with people are essential attributes in this profession.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionOn successful completion of the apprenticeship employees will be able to work in the industry as a beauty therapist or nail technician, or progress on to the NVQ level 3 qualification and achieve the Advanced Apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy/massage or Nail Technology.

Beauty Therapy, Massage or Nail Technology Advanced Apprenticeship

Course Code: B1133 Fees: 1 Start Date: Throughout the year Level: 3

Asian Bridal Makeup and Mehndi College Certificate

Course Code: C0636 Fees: £160 Start Date: 21 January 2014

What is the training about?Employees will gain basic knowledge and understanding of Asian bridal looks, paisley and modern mehndi designs.

Who should attend?It is aimed at individuals who have a specific interest in Asian bridal makeup and mehndi, and need a basic knowledge of skin care, including cleansing, toning and moisturising.

Training outcomesEmployees will cover Asian bridal makeup application including strip lash application. Within mehndi employees will be practising and creating simple designs including paisley. Over the six week course, four weeks will be spent on Asian bridal makeup and two weeks on mehndi. Please note that a patch test is required for mehndi and lash glue.

DurationThree hours per week for six weeks.

Eastern Bamboo MassageLevel 2 Certificate

Course Code: C0635 Fees: £165 Start Date: 24 September 2013

What is the training about?This training is aimed at people who already hold a recognised qualification in body massage or similar and who wish to expand their practical skills using bamboo.

Who should attend?Employees should have a Level 3 anatomy and physiology qualification or equivalent, or a Level 3 body massage qualification.

Training outcomesThe training will cover all related Health and Safety aspects in relation to bamboo massage, the underpinning knowledge in relation to consultation skills and contra-indications. Employees will cover the safe application of using bamboo in their massage routines.

DurationFour weeks, three hours a week.

AssessmentAssessment will take place in the form of training work, a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and a multiple choice examination.

ProgressionThis is a college certificate only, but employees may apply for any hair or beauty training that the College offers or a selection of other nationally-recognised qualifications.

Hopi Ear Candles College Certificate

Course Code: C0073 Fees: £70 Start Date: 18 February 2014

What is the training about?Hopi ear candles or thermo-auricular therapy is increasingly popular and wonderfully relaxing treatment. Hopi ear candles are excellent to use with family and friends or for any therapist to train and add to their existing repertoire.

Who should attend?Delegates should have responsibility within their workplace for complementary therapies of this nature, or be looking to move in to this area.

Training outcomesDelegates will learn the main benefits of this relaxing, therapeutic treatment, which aids many ear, nose, throat and head conditions. All the health and safety aspects of this therapy and the basic anatomy will be covered, as well as practical application of the candles and a pressure point massage.

DurationOne day.

AssessmentNone.

ProgressionThis training will enhance the employee’s current skills as a beauty/holistic therapist.

Intimate WaxingLevel 3 Certificate

Course Code: C0633 Fees: £110 Start Date: 14 January 2014

What is the training about?This training is ideal for industry professionals who want/need to further their skills in waxing techniques.

Who should attend?Employees must be over 19 to attend this training.

Training outcomesThe training will cover all the relevant Health and Safety relating to preparing for and providing wax depilation treatments. Employees will gain the underpinning knowledge in relation to consultation skills and contra-indications. Employees will cover techniques using a variety of products and equipment. This training involves the temporary removal of terminal hair around the bikini area.

DurationFour weeks, three hours a week.

AssessmentContinuous assessment and exams. It is essential to provide one’s own clients for the final summative assessment.

ProgressionThe training will enhance current skills for an experienced beauty therapist. A range of other beauty therapy training is also available at Leicester College.

Lash Extensions Level 2 Certificate

Course Codes: C0634 Fees: £70 Start Date: 21 October 2013

What is the training about?Completion of this training will give delegates the confidence and knowledge required to work with lash extensions. The effect lasts for 8 to 12 weeks with the client returning on a fortnightly basis for maintenance.

Who should attend?The training is ideal for the qualified therapist wishing to update their skills or add to their services offered. Delegates do not need prior certificates or diplomas in beauty therapy to train as an eyelash extension specialist. There are no prerequisites for entering this industry, but the following attributes would be helpful: patience, good eyesight, a steady hand, a high level of concentration, pride in their work, precision and care with an eye for detail.

Training outcomesThe training content includes how to apply individual lashes, the maintenance procedure and how to remove individual lashes. Delegates will work in pairs. A patch test 24 to 48 hours prior to the start of the training is required. This is a very profitable treatment: the average charge is £50 to £75 per set.

DurationOne day.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionThis skill set will allow delegates to work freelance and/or enhance their career prospects as a beauty therapist or makeup artist in beauty-related industries.

Makeup and Lash and Brow Treatments College Certificate

Course Code: C0630 Fees: £900 Start Date: 26 September 2013

What is the training about?This training is aimed at employees who have an interest in makeup and will give them basic skin care skills in day, evening and special occasion makeup and eyelash and eyebrow treatments.

Who should attend?Any employee interested in updating their skills in makeup and lash and brow treatments.

Training outcomesTraining will cover the structure and function of the skin, how to identify skin types, corrective makeup methods and selection of suitable products and equipment to provide makeup care treatments. Employees will also cover eyelash and eyebrow tinting, eyebrow shaping, strip lashes and individual lashes, together with related anatomy and physiology, contra-indications, aftercare advice and safe health and safety working practices.

DurationThree hours per week for 31 weeks

AssessmentOnline and practical assessments

ProgressionEmployees could progress on to a Level 2 in Makeup or Beauty Therapy, or individual awards in facial treatments, manicure, pedicure or waxing.

MicrodermabrasionLevel 3 Award

Course Code: C0626 Fees: £70 Start Date: 23 October 2013

What is the training about?Microdermabrasion is becoming one of the UK’s most sought-after treatments. This system uses both the traditional crystal and more advanced diamond tipped techniques of microdermabrasion.

Who should attend?Any industry delegate who would like to update their skills or broaden their treatment portfolio. Delegates should have an NVQ level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in Beauty Therapy before starting this training.

Training outcomesBy completing this training delegates will cover the benefits of microdermabrasion, how it works, the skin’s functions, client consultation and all the related Health, Safety and hygiene procedures. Delegates will cover skin diagnosis and the different treatments and techniques used for the different skin conditions. Also included will be information on aftercare and home care products.

DurationOne day.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

ProgressionEmployees can subsequently progress to training in superficial chemical peels, oxygen therapy, and advanced electrolysis.

Manicure Level 2 Award

Course Code: C0631 Fees: £500 Start Date: 19 September 2013

What is the training about?This training will provide employees with basic skills and knowledge needed in order to undertake manicures and specialised manicure treatments.

Who should attend?Any employee wishing to develop new skills in manicure.

Training outcomesThis training will cover all the relevant Health and Safety relating to manicure treatments and the products used. Employees will also gain the underpinning knowledge in relation to consultation skills and contra-indications. Employees will cover a range of manicure techniques including products and equipment for basic and specialised manicures. Duration11 weeks.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous, including a practical and an online assessment.

ProgressionOn completion of the manicure award, progression can be made on to a diploma in Level 2 or Level 3 Nail Services, or Level 2 Beauty Therapy – either general or makeup routes.

Nail ArtLevel 2 Award

Course Codes: C0627 Fees: £330 Start Date: 6 May 2014

What is the training about?This training will give qualified beauty therapists further insight into the application of nail art.

Who should attend?This training would be excellent for nail technicians working in the industry who want to extend their skills to cover nail art work.

Training outcomesEmployees will study various nail art techniques including freehand painting, application of jewels, rhinestones and flat stones. The training also includes other application techniques such as glitter dust, foil wraps, transfers and striping.

DurationEight weeks, three hours a week.

AssessmentAssessment will include practical application and an assignment.

ProgressionOn completion of this training employees can further their professional development by progressing on to the level 2 award in Nail Technology or a selection of beauty therapy training here at Leicester College.

Nail Enhancements using Gels Level 2 Certificate

Course Code: C0625 Fees: £110 Start Date: 22 October 2013

What is the training about?This training is aimed at delegates who wish to gain some basic skills in applying gel nail enhancements.

Who should attend?Delegates should have a general interest and experience in nail services.

Training outcomesDelegates will cover all the relevant Health and Safety requirements relating to nail enhancement treatments and the products they will be using.

Delegates will gain the practical skills and basic theory knowledge required for the application of gel nail enhancements.

DurationOne day.

AssessmentNone.

ProgressionOn completion of this training delegates will be able to progress on to the level 2 award in Manicure, level 2 award in Nail Art or a Nail Services level 2 training. Within their employment their skills as nail technicians will be boosted.

Nail Technology Level 2 Award

Course Code: C0629 Fees: £600 Start Date: 10 December 2013

What is the training about?This training is ideal for industry professionals who want to broaden their portfolio or extend their knowledge of a variety of nail services.

Who should attend?It is aimed at employees who wish or need to gain knowledge and experience in applying and maintaining nail enhancements.

Training outcomesThis training will cover all the relevant Health and Safety relating to nail enhancement treatments and the products used.

Employees will also gain the underpinning knowledge in relation to consultation skills and contra-indications. Employees will gain practical skills in UV gel and knowledge of wraps and liquid and powder nail systems, and practically undertake one system.

DurationThree hours per week for 15 weeks.

AssessmentExams and continuous assessment, to include a practical and an online assessment.

ProgressionOn completion of this training employees will be able to progress on to an Level 2 Award in Nail Art or a City & Guilds Level 2 in Nail Services.

Sports Massage Therapy Level 3 Certificate

Course Codes: C0638 Fees: 3 Start Date: 21 September 2013

If your employee is aged 24 or over there is no government funding available for this course. However 24+ Advanced Learning Loans are available please see Training for all Industries page 10 for further details.

What is the training about?This certificate specialises in sports massage and relevant functional anatomy, physiology and nutrition for sports therapies.

Who should attend?Employees require GCSE Science grade C or above or equivalent, and also English GCSE grade C or above. Some anatomy and physiology knowledge would be advantageous.

Training outcomesThe training consists of two modules: Applying sports massage methods to non-pathological tissue, and Anatomy, physiology and nutrition for sports therapies.

DurationEvery Saturday for one year.

AssessmentAn external exam and continuous assessment, including a portfolio.

ProgressionLeicester College offers a wide range of beauty and complementary therapy courses.

Threading Award

What is the training about?Threading has become a very popular hair removal treatment in salons. Threading uses a thin, twisted cotton thread which is rolled over unwanted hair. Adding threading to and employee’s treatment list is a simple way of increasing their profit and client base.

Who should attend?It is perfect for beginners or for existing therapists wanting to extend their skills and techniques.

Training outcomesEmployees will become competent and confident in threading.

Floristry

ApprenticeshipsAn Apprenticeship is a work based training programme which allows employees to complement the skills that they learn, develop and use within the workplace with theoretical knowledge gained at college.

Training outcomesOn completion employees will achieve:• an NVQ in their chosen occupation (NVQ Level 2 for

Intermediate Apprenticeships and NVQ Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships)

• Functional Skills in English and maths• workplace Health and Safety knowledge• personal learning and thinking skills• employer rights and responsibilities.

AssessmentAssessment is undertaken in the workplace and at college. Employees should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence.

FloristryIntermediate Apprenticeship

Course Code: B1134 Fees: 1 Start Date: Throughout the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This apprenticeship is aimed at employees who are already in full time employment in a commercial florist.

Who should attend?Employees must be employed for more than 30 hours in the floristry industry, and successfully complete an initial assessment process. GCSEs in English, maths and design would be advantageous.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionEmployees will be able to progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship or gain employment in a floristry shop, garden centre, or retail outlet where flowers are sold.

Christmas Flower ArrangingLevel 2 Certificate

Course Code: C0620 Fees: £350 Start Date: 5 November 2013

What is the training about?Employees will gain the chance to learn about different Christmas flower arrangements and create their own designs.

Who should attend?Employees who have little or no flower arranging experience, and who need basic skills to create festive arrangements. Employees will need to supply their own flowers, foliage and materials.

Training outcomesA knowledge of the skills needed to construct Christmas flower arrangements. DurationThree hours per week for five weeks.

AssessmentOngoing practical demonstration of skills.

ProgressionEmployees may wish to develop other specialised skills in floristry.

Introduction to Flower Arranging Level 2 Certificate

Course Codes: C0619 Fees: £300 Start Date: 24 September 2013

What is the training about?This training gives an insight into flower arranging and how to make designs for the home.

Who should attend?It is aimed at beginners who have a general interest in using flowers and foliage to make arrangements for pleasure.

Training outcomesPractical demonstrations and an informal workshop, where employees can learn the basics required to make interesting flower arrangements, which can enhance and decorate their own home.

Employees will learn the basic requirements of flower arranging and gain awareness of correct conditioning methods of flowers and foliage to ensure their longevity.

DurationOne evening per week, 6pm to 9pm for four weeks.

AssessmentOngoing practical demonstration of skills.

ProgressionSuccessful completion of this training will give an insight into what is involved in the floristry profession.

Spring Flower Arranging Level 2 Certificate

Course Code: C0622 Fees: £350 Start Date: 7 January 2014

What is the training about?This training is suitable for anyone wishing to make flower arrangements using flowers and foliage available in the spring to create seasonal designs for retail.

Who should attend?Employees will need to work in the industry. Please note: employees will need to supply their own camera, flowers, foliage and materials.

Training outcomesThe training will consist of practical demonstrations in an informal workshop, where employees can use seasonal materials in their designs.

DurationFive weeks, 3 hours a week.

AssessmentNone.

ProgressionFurther training is available at Leicester College before moving on to City & Guilds Level 1 and Level 2 Diplomas in Floristry.

What is the training about?Employees will gain an insight into wedding flower designs, styles and construction methods.

Who should attend?Any industry employee who would like to broaden the range of products that they create and sell, or specialise in weddings. Please note: employees will need to supply their own camera, flowers, foliage and materials.

Training outcomesThe programme consists of practical demonstrations and an informal workshop session, where employees can construct their own wedding flower design. Employees will gain further awareness of appropriate materials to use and the inclusion of accessories to enhance the appearance of each design.

DurationEight weeks, 3 hours a week.

AssessmentNone.

ProgressionFurther training in Floristry is on offer at Leicester College, and employees could then advance to City & Guilds Level 1 and Level 2 Diplomas in Floristry.
