The State of Salaf in Ramadan

Fasting is a way of worshipping Allah 2by abstaining from food, drink:, sexual intercourse (with ones spouse) and smoking, from dawntill sunset during the whole month of Ramadan.

Fasting is Fardh 3 , as the Almighty Allah said: 0 you who believe, fasting is prescribed to thosebefore you, that you may (learn) self -restraint. 4Fasting is a fundamental ordinance of Islam.Muhammad, the Prophet salla AIlahu alaihi :ualImt 5said: Islam is based on five pillars: testifyingthat there is no God (worthy of worship) but Allah, and that M uhammad is the Messenger of Allah, perform ing prayers, paying Zakah 6 fastingduring the month of Ramadan, and1 S a la f are the Muslim ancestors who set goodexamples in the application of Islam.2. H. Every day , Allah, having decorated His Para-dise, says, 0 Paradise My good worshippers areabout to throw off the burden (of life) and the hanndone to them and then get to youAfter knowing the aforementioned advantagesof Ramadan, how should we get ready to receive it?A true believer should receive Ramadan withtrue repentance and a strong will to avail himself ofAllah's special mercy and kindness bestowed onhim during this holy month. He should spend histime doing what is good and useful. Here are the Good Deeds that are done in Ram-adan.

    1. Fastini:.The Prophet uIa AI1ahu lii wuan.m said: The rewardof every good deed is multiplied by ten to sevenhundred folds depending on one's intention and sin-cerity, but with respect to the reward of fasting, Al-lah proclaims : Fasting is for me and I myself shallbestow the reward. Whoever fasts foregoing his de-sires of eating and drinking for My sake will be en-titled for two occasions of joy : one when he breakshis fast and the other when he meets his Rubb 1

1- Rubb means, among other things, the Creator, theOwner, the Sustainer, the Provider, and the One inwhose hand is the disposal of all affairs.

There is no doubt that the great reward will notbe given to those who only go without food anddrink. The Prophet (Salla Allahu ala ihi wasallam) sa id ,He who does not refrain from telling lies, Allahdoes not need him to refraim from eating and drink-ing.: 1

Concerning the behavior of a fasting person, theProphet (salla Allahu ala ihi wuallam said: Fast is a shield;therefore, whoever is fasting should not resort to obscene language and immoral behaviour. someone abuses or quarrels with a fasting person, the latter should say, 0 brother I am fast-ing Le. I cannot reply to you).2

Thus when you fast, you should refrain fromdoing any evil, and in your actions, you shoulddifferentiate between an ordinary day and a day offasting. ' Observing the Supererogatory nightprayer COiyam.

Muslims have to perform Taraweeh prayers,i.e. prayers, performed at night after Al- Isha inRamadan) with the Imam. The Prophet (u1laAllahuaW hi wullm said:

Whoever prays at night with his Imam till thelatter leaves, will be rewarded as he prayed thewhole night.

    3. Sadaga -Charity.The Messenger o Allah (lalla Allahu aW hi wull m wasthe most generous o all men, especially in Ramadan. He stated: The best charity is that which is

given away in Ramadan. 2Ornar Ibn Al-Khattab my Allah p1ea1ed wit him)said: 1; he Messenger o Allah sana AIlahu ala ihi wasaUam)ordered us to give in charity. It happened that I hadsome money then, and it came to my mind that thistime I would outdo Abu Bakhar once, ever. SoI took half o my money to the Prophet who said:

What have you kept for your family? Thesame amount, I said. When the Messenger (sallaAllahualaihi wasallam) asked Abu Bakr the same question, heanswered: Allah and His Messenger (meaning hehad brought with him all the money he had) . Thus,I decided, said Omar, not to compete with AbuBakr again at all.As charity in Ramadan gets higher rewards com-pared to charity on other normal days, a Muslimshould give as much o s he/she can.Following are some o the aspects o charity:A) Providing Food

Allah, The Almighty, said:And they feed, for the love o Allah, the indi-gent, the orphan, and the captive, saying, We feedyou for the sake o Allah alone. No reward do wdesire from you, nor thanks. We only fear a Day o

distressful wrath from the side o our Rubb. But Allah will deliver them from the evil o thatDay, and will shed over them a light o beauty andblissful joy And because they were patient and

constant, will reward them with a garden andgarments of silk. 1

Our good Salaf were concerned with feedingeither a hungry person or a righteous brother; forthe person who is fed would not necessarily be poor.Allah's Apostle ( s Allahu . aihi wua11am) said: f a believer feeds a hungry believer, Allah willfeed him on the fruit of Paradise; and whoever gives

water to a thirsty believer, Allah will give him ahiq makhtoum 2n Ramadan, Ibn Omar (may Allah be pleasedwith him) did not break his fast except in the company of orphans or the poor, and whenever he

learned that his family had turned them away, hewould Qreak his fast that night with a heavy heart. Some Salaf would serve food to their Muslimbrothers and would attend to them while theythemselves were still fasting. Feeding-a way ofworship-develops cordiality and affection among

the Muslim brothers, a feeling that would leadthem to Paradise. AI-Qur'an 76:8-12.2 Transmitted by Tirmithi.Rahiq makhtoum is a very delicious drink in Paradise.

As the Prophet lalla allahu llaihi WI Ilam stated: Youwill never be admitted to Paradise till you believe(in Islam) and you will never be (considered as) be-lievers till you love each other. Moreover, Feeding would also provide opportu-nities to come contact with pious people.B r o v i i n ~ breakfast for people who are

the latter. Then the people said: 0 Apostle ofAllah But not all of us can find a fasting personwho can break his fast with us. The apostle oalla Allahullaihi wuoIlam replied: Allah grants this reward to who-ever provides a fasting person with a sip of milk, adate, or a mouthful of water. Whoever provides afasting person with something to drink, Allah willprovide him with a mouthful from my basin afterwhich he will never be thirsty, till he is admitted toParadise. 21 Transmitted by Ahmad & Nisaa'i.

    4. Perseverance in reciting the Holy Qur'an:The good Salaf used to do the following: Recite the Qur'an a lot.B.They used to weep during their recitation orwhile listening to the Qur'an as a result of theirreverence for the Almighty Allah.C. As Ramadan is the month of the revela-

tion of the Qur'an, the Muslims would recite a greatdeal of it. For Gabriel, the angel who conveyedthe Qur'an to the Prophet alla Allahu alaihi wasallam), usedto teach the latter the Qur'an in Ramadan.Uthman Ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased withhim) used to finish reading the whole Qur'an in

less than a week. Some Salaf used to finish readingthe Qur'an within three, seven or ten nights, andthey recited it during prayer or otherwise. It is worthwhile to know that the most favourableperiod for reciting the Qur'an is during the month ofRamadan especially at the nights when people seekLaitatul Qadr (The night of Decree).D. At a certain time on Friday, which could bethe last hour of that day, invocations are alsoaccepted.Lastly, I would like to draw your attention, dearbrothers, to something of great importance, andthat is the sincerity of one s intention. For many a

fasting person would get no reward for his fasting ifit lacks sincerity and devotion. That is why theProphet (saUa Allahu a\aihi wasaUam) always stressed thispoint by saying: with faith and the intention toearn the reward.Allah, the Almighty, says:Say: I am but a man like yourselves, (but) theinspiration has come to me, tnat your God is oneGod: whoever expects to meet his Rubb, let himwork in righteousness, and in the worship of his

FUN RAMADAN:There is a dangerous tendency noticed especially in Ramadan, Le wasting one s timeinstead of spending in Allah s worship, remembrance and obedience. In fact, it is the renunciation of Allah s worship and obedience which results in the deprivation ofAllah s Mercy and Divineawards. Thus, Allah said: But whosoever turns awayfrom My message verily for him is a life narroweddown, and We shall raise him up blind on the Dayof Judgement.e will say: my Rubb, why have you

young Muslims who loiter the hours away invain. No doubt, a way to gain happiness is togive advice 1 to Muslims who go astray and showthem the right way. On the other hand, we shouldpray to Allah to help them follow His way so as toavoid spreading evil..Some Rules of Fastin i:

I-Fasting of Ramadan is an obligatory duty forevery adult and sane Muslim. Fasting is not obligatory on the Kaafir disbeliever and so it is not accepted from him until he becomes a Muslim . Fasting is not due for the young until they reachpuberty.

2- However, the young should be encouragedto fast if they can manage it w ithout causing harmto themselves, so that they may grow up accustomed to it till they are of age to fast.3- The insane or the unconscious o not haveto fast. or this reason, very old people who are notmentally alert are not expected to fast and neednot offer food in return for not having fasted.

Regarding the fasting o a sick or a travellingperson, Allah says: f any o you is ill, o r on a journey, the prescribed number (shall be made up) fromdays later.

There are two types o SICK PEOPLE: the firsttype is that o a chronically sick person whose illness is a lasting one and who is not expected to recover. In this case, he does not have to fast because he cannot endure fasting at any time. Heshould, however, offer food to a poor person forevery day o fasting he misses. In this respect, hecan either call a-number o poor persons equal tothe number o days he m issed and then offer themdinner o r lunch Annas Tbn Malik used to dowhen he grew older. r he can distribute foodamong a number o poor persons equal to thenumber o days he missed. Every poor personshould be given a quarte' o the Prophet's saa

which is a quantity food equal to 3 Kilogramsapproximately) good wheat. It is preferable thatto this quantity he adds the necessary quantity meat roil needed for cooking.Likewise, the old person who is incapable fasting should offer food to a poor person for everyday he does not fast.

The second type sick people is the person whois temporarily e.g. a feverish person) and in thiscase there are three categories: a) A person who does not find fasting hard rharmful, in which case, he should fast as he has noexcuse. b)A person who finds fasting hard but not harmful. In this case, fasting is not recommended for him, because it is better that he makes use Allah spermisssion rconcession rukhsah) since fast-ing would be painful to him.

c A person who would be harmed by fasting , inwhich case, fasting is Haram (prohibited) becauseAllah said: Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves, forAllah hath been to you most Merciful andsaid: nd make not your own hands contribute

    to your destruction; 1

and No harm (to yourselves) nor hanning(others).

The hann of fasting to a sick person can be ascertained by the sick person himself or by a trusteddoctor. So, a person in this category breaks hisfast, he must fast for the number of days that hemisses, once he recovers. But if he dies before recovery, then the obligation falls awaysince he was expected to make up for the misseddays on later days which he did not live to see.1- AI-Quran.2- Reported by Ibn Majah and Hakim.

    (d) As for TRAVELLERSthere are twotypes:1) O ne who tries to avoid fasting by histravel. Of course such a person is not exemptedfrom fasting since deception to avoid an obligatoryduty ofAllah does not eliminate it.

    2) As for the second type (the true travelleD.there are tr groups:a. The traveller who suffers extreme hanlship. In such a case, fasting is Haraam . As ProphetM uham m ad Ana Allua uUhi.....u.m was fasting duringthe conquest ofMakkah, he learnt that some pe-ple with him were doing exactly the same; he dranka cup of water after the A sr prayer as people werelooking a t him. H e was then told that some peoplewere still fasting, so he said: Those are the disobe-dient , those are the disobedient b. This type of traveller finds fasting hard butnot excessively so. It is preferable that such a travel-ler should not fast because he would, by fasting, berejecting A llah s concession and would also bebringing hardship and suffering to himself.

    c. Here the traveller does not find fasting hard.Such a traveller should do whichever is easier forhim Le. he chooses between fasting and not fastingbecause Allah wants facilitate things for you. Hedoes not want to put you into difficulties. 1

The traveller is considered to be on a journeyfrom the moment he leaves his town until he returnsto it, even he stays in the town o destination for along period o time, as long as he intends not tostay there after he finishes the purpose forwhich he travelled.

In this case, he makes use o the concessionsallowable for the traveller even this s tayex -tends for a long time, because no specification uponthe period o time involved in the journey was re-ported by Prophet Muhammad alla l ahu alaihi wauUam The basic stipulation is that the rules pertainingto the journey undertaken by a fasting personremain valid until there is evidence that such ajourney has been terminated or that the rules re-lating to it do not apply any longer.

There s no distinction between journeys withattached concessions, which are incidental; such asthose for Hajj o r Umra or visiting a relative or fortrade etc., and those continuous journeys such sthose made by taxi or truck drivers. Such drivers areconsidered travellers from the moment they leavetheir own town. They can enjoy all the concessionsallowable to other travellers such s shorteningo the four Rakaa prayer, the combining o twoprayers together when necessary one immediatelyafter the other, such as Dhuhr and Asr, orMaghrib and Isha .

No fasting s preferred for such people it isthe easiest option, and they make up for it by fastingin o ther months. This is the case because suchdrivers belong to a specific town, and once theyare in their own towns, they are considered sresidents and the rules applying to residents areapplicable to them. When they are on journeys, then they are considered travellers, and the rulesapplying to travellers are then applicable to them.

THINGS THAT NULLIFY FASTINGThere are seven things which nullify the fast:

Sexual intercourse with ones spouse. Whena fasting person has intercourse, his fast is inval-idated. he has this intercourse during the day-time o Ramadan, then Kaffarah atonement) willbe imposed on him. In such a case, Kaffarah is oneof the following things respectively: first the free-ing o a slave; that is not possible, then heshould fast two months consecutively. he fails todo this, then he should feed sixty poor people.

But the fasting person is not one o those whomust fast e.g. a traveller) and he has intercourse, then Qadhaa meaning fasting at a later period),is required and no atonement is applicable to him.

2Ejaculation o semen as a result o touching, kissing or hugging ones spouse. Kissing withoutejaculation does not break the fast.3 The intake o any kind o food or drinkwhethere beneficial or even harmful.
