An Immersive Learning Experience

The Strategic Simulation Workshop is a rigorous experiential strategy

workshop designed for middle managers, and delivered by visiting faculty and

alumni of IIM Ahmedabad. The workshop provides a real life feel of integrated

management by combining the soft skills of leadership, people management

and communication, with the hard skills of planning, forecasting, marketing,

finance, quality and operations. Participants will run organizations that

compete in a simulated business environment, providing a learning platform

across management functions. External interventions force participants to

think through their decisions and evaluate whether their business strategies

are the best fit for the external environment.

Program Structure

The workshop will be conducted over 2-3 days by IIMA alumni and faculty.

Participants will be grouped in teams of 4-6 members, with each team

forming one company in a virtual environment. Teams will be created so as to

have members with diversity in functional experience, industry exposure andleadership skills. Team members will execute the top management functions

of the companies they represent. The different companies will decide their

business strategy and financial metrics, and compete against each other for

market share, profitability and business sustenance in a virtual market

environment.

The simulation will be run over several virtual quarters, with embedded

modules on fundamentals in Finance, Accounting, Operations, Marketing, and

Business Strategy. There will be a recap of business concepts at the end of 

each quarter. Each quarter will be run over a time frame of 2-3 hours. The

workshop is based on an industry case study, which will be sent to

participants after they register for the workshop. The course will be a mix of 

business simulation, lectures, case study and interactive role-plays.

Leadership

Participants learn how to sell their vision to other stakeholders – their seniors,

peers and subordinates. For this they have to understand every facet of their

vision  – what is required by different functions for execution, what financial

impact it will have on the company y, and how it will affect the company in

the long run; conceptualize and sell their idea; and convince the rest of the

team to follow their vision!

Finance

Participants evaluate the financial health of their company by studying its

Profit and Loss Statement, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement, and

understand the dynamics of the industry through ratio analysis. Participants

learn to evaluate each proposal financially. They learn to calculate whether

the market will pay them a premium on their investment. They improve

decision making by basing decisions on heuristics backed by proper financial

analysis rather than intuition alone.

Marketing

Participants are taught to identify the needs of customers and tailor the

product and associated services according to these needs. They realize thevalue of continuous improvement to the product offering through R&D. The

participants also observe how the market response is dependent on not only

their actions but also of their competitors and how their company can deal

effectively with competition.

Decision making under pressure

Participants are subjected to intense time constraints as they crunch data

received from multiple sources and formulate short term tactics and longterm strategy while taking on heavy competition. They learn how to manage

time and make decisions based on analysis of data.
