Macedon Ranges police have charged 25 offenders for lighting fires or burning-off illegally in the shire during the fire danger period.

Fire restrictions in the Macedon Ranges started on December 23 and finished on April 14.

Star Weekly can reveal that of the 260 call-outs of the Country Fire Authority during the 2013-14 fire season, 67 were non-structural fires also attended by police.

Across the Loddon Mallee region, police attended 233 incidents.

A total of 15 incidents in the Macedon Ranges related to unauthorised burn-offs, including four fires in Woodend, three in Gisborne, two in Hesket-Kerrie, two in Riddells Creek, and one each in Kyneton, Lancefield and Romsey.

A further 17 incidents were attributed to abandoned rubbish or waste fires.

Outside the fire danger period, burning-off restrictions still apply under Macedon Ranges council law. Landowners must apply for a permit to light a fire in the open air if their property is 4000 square metres or less.

Last Thursday, Woodend CFA attended a fire on a quarter-acre block where toxic materials were burnt, including rubber and computers.

Woodend CFA’s 1st Lieutenant Mike Dornau said call-outs to properties last week proved residents were not aware of the restrictions.

“We’ve been to a couple of incidents in the past couple of weeks where people are burning off when they’re not allowed to burn off at all,” he said.

The council has not issued any infringements since the fire danger period ended.

Council community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said the council aimed to educate rather than enforce penalties.

“The local law is there for a reason … we want people to be mindful that there are options to burning off,” she said. “Burning off is a good way for clearing up your property, but it’s not the only way.”

Ms Lindner said most Macdeon Ranges properties were serviced by green waste collection, and it was free for residents to drop green waste at the transfer station.

CFA district 2 operations manager Steve Smith said the fire authority was educating Macedon Ranges residents about the processes of registering burn-offs.

“It’s something CFA is dealing with across the whole state,” he said.

“We certainly don’t want to discourage people from cleaning up their properties, but the community needs to understand that there’s a period of time when it’s safe to do so.

“The best time is around the end of September when the weather starts to change. There’s a window of opportunity between spring and the start of the fire danger period around December.

“There are 45,000 people in the Macedon Ranges and 45 fire trucks. It’s crucial that communities are working with the emergency services to ensure they’re prepared.”

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges motorists will be among the hardest hit by the federal government’s new fuel tax, according to McEwen MP Rob Mitchell.

Mr Mitchell told the last sitting of Federal Parliament the tax was “one of the cruellest blows” of this year’s controversial budget.

The government will reintroduce the indexation of the fuel excise to the Consumer Price Index on August 1. The move is expected to net the government $2.2 billion over the next four years.

Mr Mitchell said most families in the electorate were heavily reliant on their vehicles.

“We have one of the highest rates of cars per household across the nation,’’ he said.

‘‘With a lack of other transport options, cars are often the only form of transport available.”

The 2011 census showed 63 per cent of Macedon Ranges residents travelled to work by car, while only 6.9 per cent used public transport. “Any tax that affects one community far more than others is categorically unfair,” Mr Mitchell said.

He said residents in places such as Mernda, Sunbury and Gisborne had no choice but to

commute for work, sometimes up to an hour each way, to provide for their families.

Riddells Creek resident Stuart Edwards said he was furious about the excise increase, on top of other budget cuts. The social worker and single father of four commutes to St Kilda daily.

‘‘It’s going to be a fairly big hit for people who live in the outer parts of Melbourne.

‘‘This budget is going to hit me pretty hard, I’m a professional who has done two batches of uni study, and it’s hard for me to buy new clothes for my kids.”

Fuel prices are expected to increase 1 cent per litre under the new fuel tax.

A group seeking to protect the UL Daly Nature Reserve from development is calling on the Macedon Ranges council to delete the inclusion of an early-years hub from an environmental management plan.

The plan was due to be considered at a meeting next week, but the council will take more time to consider the plan and “investigate issues raised by residents”.

More than 60 written submissions were received by the council when the document was on exhibition.

Council planning and environment director Sophie Segafredo said the future use and management of the reserve had been a topic of “significant interest” to residents.

“The submissions reflect a range of views and touch on many aspects of the draft plan, including the early years’ hub footprint,” she said. “We are carefully considering community views.”

Friends of Daly Nature Reserve president Helen Radnedge said the plan needed to be corrected and the council needed to delete the early-learning hub.

“The remainder of the environment management plan can be rewritten with the willing assistance of the Friends as the key stakeholder group,” she said.

The group’s submission to the draft plan recommended the rezoning of the reserve to a conservation zone, a conservation covenant to be applied for the entire nature reserve, significant vegetation and heritage overlays, and a long-term and meaningful partnership with the Wurundjeri Tribe Land and Compensation Cultural Heritage Council.

“The [childcare] footprint is on the lowest point in the nature reserve, which has substantial groundwater, a steep slope and large historic trees,” Ms Radnedge said.

“If the trees are removed and the huge earthworks carried out, the groundwater alone could cause major flooding problems.

“This area is joined by bushland to a bushfire-prone area.

“It’s certainly not the right place for childcare on a total fire ban day, and these days are predicted to increase in number and severity.”

The 60 submissions will be drawn upon for a revised management plan, which the council will consider at its July 23 meeting.

Yarn-bombing a successful missionA ‘bomb’ has gone off to brighten and warm up Woodend.

As part of the Get Knitted project organised by Macedon Ranges council and Goldfields Libraries, Woodend has been yarn-bombed by volunteers who meet at the library on Fridays to knit and recycle donated wool.

For the second year in a row they have decorated trees, benches and other parts of the town in items knitted from brightly coloured wool.

Library manager Susie Prestney said it was a great community effort by people of all ages.

“The project has brought students together

with more accomplished knitters to chat, knit and craft,” she said.

The project inspired Ms Prestney to find new ways of working with volunteers and she has now received a $30,000 Barrett Reid scholarship, which will enable her to investigate best practice in volunteer programs in libraries.

As part of her research, Ms Prestney will go to California to take up an internship at the California State Library and visit award-winning libraries in the San Jose area.

But the trip won’t be all fun and games for the mother of two, who will investigate volunteer engagement and how libraries are evolving.

Back home, she will present her findings to public library staff in Victoria.

“The scholarship aims to develop future leaders in the Victorian public library sector,” she said. “The aim of the program is to share new knowledge and skills to benefit the Victorian public library sector as a whole.”

Mayor Roger Jukes encouraged residents to be involved with the Get Knitted project.

“Community art lets people connect with their community,” he said.

Macedon residents have united to fight a proposal for an apartment complex and shops in the town’s main street. The plans for 19 Victoria Street include 18 apartments and five shops in an area that is zoned commercial.

If it gets the go-ahead, the apartment complex would be the first of its kind in Macedon.

Stephen Colerio, of town planning consultancy G2 Urban Planning, addressed more than 120 people at a community meeting in Jubilee Hall earlier this month to discuss the proposal and answer questions.

Macedon/Mount Macedon community planning group chairwoman Mandi Mees said residents overwhelmingly rejected the proposed development.

She said there was strong community interest in protecting the town’s natural landscape and environmental values.

“Many who attended are not opposed to development but view the proposal as an opportunity to shape the streetscape of Victoria Street and set a precedent for the future of Macedon,” she said.

“Locals expect the proposed development to meet well-documented community values and aspirations and respect the planning policies for Macedon.”

A state government planning report, published online, details zone and overlay provisions that apply to the land, including bushfire management and restructure overlays.

Since the application to build the complex was submitted in November, the council has received 63 submissions and a petition of 389 signatures.

Ms Mees said a reduction in the height and density of the proposal was raised, and residents had discussed changing the design to fit with Macedon’s natural landscapes and village atmosphere.

“There was opposition to the car park waiver, arguing increased pedestrian safety concerns and a loss of amenity to adjacent landowners and businesses,” she said.

“The view is that appropriate car parking should be made available within the site for the new residents and patrons of retail outlets.”

Other concerns included the loss of sun to neighbouring properties and valuable gardens, restricted access to rear dwellings in the event of a fire, the height and tower feature of the proposed development being intrusive, loss of privacy where windows overlook existing properties, and drainage issues.

The council is assessing submissions to this application and has not yet decided when a decision will be made on the permit application.

Residents unite to fight off flats

‘‘ Locals expect the development to meet community values ’’

- Mandi MeesMacedon Ranges families are in for a treat this winter, with Woodend to host its first children’s festival.

Best-selling authors, performers, magicians and puppeteers will appear at Buffalo Stadium on Sunday, July 27.

Festival co-founder Gemma Rayner announced the festival program at a launch last Wednesday.

She says the event will provide families with “a little bit of sparkle’’ in the middle of winter.

“We live in such a vibrant community, with a fabulous calendar of events of all sorts,’’ Ms Rayner said.

‘‘But there was nothing like this – a big, arts-focused festival aimed squarely at children and families.”

New Zealand children’s musician and author Craig ‘‘Wonky Donkey’’ Smith will perform songs from his album Not Just For Kids.

The program includes performances by local songwriter and musician David Juriansz, didgeridoo and indigenous storytelling, dance acts, magic shows and life-sized camel puppets.

Children can take part in hands-on workshops and learn about circus tricks, origami, weaving, African drumming, puppet making, eco-friendly craft, and more.

Ms Rayner hopes the festival will become part of the annual events landscape and promote tourism.

Tickets are $12. For more details, visit www.woodendchildrensfestival.com.au.

Sunbury has the opportunity to become one of the most popular places for people to live, according to a leading social commentator.

Demographer and futurist Bernard Salt was guest speaker at a Sunbury business dinner last week when he spoke of his confidence in the booming town.

“What Sunbury has to offer goes to the core of Australian values: family, lifestyle and access to a broad job market,” he said.

Mr Salt said Sunbury residents had the best of

“People want a rural life but city jobs and Sunbury and Melton are two of the fastest-growing places in Australia because people want the best of both worlds.”

Mr Salt said Sunbury’s attractions were many, including a steady growth rate, quality of life, rail link to the city, affordable housing, and being separate from the CBD and metropolitan Melbourne. And the list will continue to grow.

He told Star Weekly Sunbury had potential to develop into a lifestyle precinct, with a strong cafe culture foreseeable in the near future.

A Lygon Street or Chapel Street-type

both worlds, with access to opportunities in both the northern and western growth corridors.

“Sunbury is not the subject of extraordinary growth, but you have extraordinary growth around and nearby, which provides opportunity,” he said.

“There’s more growth to the west, more growth to the north, and sitting smack bang in between is Sunbury.

“You can live in Sunbury and you can work at the airport or at any one of the workplaces that are opening in the north and west, with access through the Western Ring Road.

precinct with cafes, bars and restaurants within Sunbury would mean residents wouldn’t need to travel to the city, and it would attract visitors.

Mr Salt said Sunbury businesses needed to work together to create a destination people from all across Victoria wanted to visit.

“You want four million people in Melbourne to say, ‘It’s just beyond the airport, it’s 30 minutes away, let’s go have a look’.”

But there were still missing pieces . . . Mr Salt said Sunbury needed a campus for tertiary or TAFE education, while aged-care and lifestyle villages were a long-term consideration.

Sunbury: rural life with city jobs

Woodend Primary School will raise funds on the shortest day of the year to pay for solar panels to power the school.

Acting principal Lynne Flynn said the school’s annual electricity bill was about $25,000.

“It’s exciting to imagine what else the school could do with that money, every year, if we generated our own electricity from solar panels,” she said.

The school has had three funding applications turned down by the federal government and is now taking its future into its own hands, intending to raise the money itself.

“Any donation to the cause will be greatly received at the school office, because every little bit helps,” Mrs Flynn said.

The school aims to install a 10-kilowatt array on three roofs with different orientations to capture as much sun as possible.

Mrs Flynn said the total 30-kilowatt system

would include 120 panels to be installed as the school could afford them.

“The school’s power bills will also be reduced, freeing up money for other purposes, for decades to come. What a wonderful legacy.” she said.

Families or organisations that donate $275 or more would be acknowledged on a permanent plaque at the school, she said.

The “solstice party for solar panels” will be held from 7pm on Saturday, June 21, at the school hall. The fund-raiser includes live music, a jukebox disco, a costume competition, supper and a complementary drink.

Tickets are $50. Details: 5427 2455

Animals in the Macedon Ranges are being caught on camera through a shire-wide animal monitoring program.

Nest boxes and remote wildlife cameras are being used in Macedon Ranges council- managed bush reserves throughout the municipality as part of a program aimed at understanding and protecting native wildlife.

Cr Jennifer Anderson said the data would show which species were in the region and help with conservation.

“We need to know what’s present in our local environments if we are going to have any hope of protecting them,” she said.

“A greater understanding of local fauna species and biodiversity will help us make better management decisions for our nature reserves.”

The nest boxes will provide a refuge for canopy wildlife, including sugar and feather-tailed gliders, where there is a lack of hollows for nesting. The boxes have been built by members of Woodend Men’s Shed, students at Gisborne Secondary College and people from the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.

Motion-triggered cameras will capture images of wildlife in their habitats. On “spotlight evenings”, data will be collected on animals active at night with the use of high-powered lights. And hair collection traps will be placed for further identification.

More than 70 people attended the program launch last Wednesday.

Cr Anderson said it was the first time the council had co-ordinated a shire-wide monitoring program of this scale.

“We are keen to consolidate our data with community groups already doing great work in this area.”

Sunbury’s teachers of tomorrow are ready and eager to share their passion as they prepare to graduate this month.

Students from Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services in Sunbury have started working in childcare centres across the town while completing the certificate III children’s services program.

Seven students have been successful in gaining employment at childcare centres after starting the five-month course in February.

Course trainer Mehtap Genc said it was great to see Sunbury residents taking the initiative.

“The community needs education and study options,” Ms Genc said.

“And the Sunbury community needs to support industry courses.”

The director of Sunbury’s A Step Ahead

Early Learning Centre, Claire Grumont, said she was delighted to support members of the community with work experience and employment opportunities.

And students were just as pleased to engage in the community and advance their learning, she added.

Graduating childcare worker Laura has had “a passion in caring for children” since she was young.

“I am thankful for a job opportunity … while completing my placement,” she said.

The next certificate III children’s services program starts on Friday, June 20.

A suicide prevention plan will be drawn up to provide better support for people at risk in the Macedon Ranges.

A group of residents affected by suicide identified the need for a plan as the next step after a workshop focused on reducing the shire’s suicide rates.

The workshop, held in April, included people who had been affected by suicide or who were caring for someone suicidal. They shared their stories in a meeting facilitated

to what’s happening around Victoria and Australia. We needed to know why … and what we can do about it.”

Ms Karena said discussions with agencies including mental health support services found a ‘‘whole of community’’ approach was needed.

“We took the lessons learned from Live4Life, our youth mental health promotion strategy, which tells us that no one agency could make a difference on its own,’’ she said.

“It is unusual for a council to be active in this space, but this council has a history of engagement in the community with mental

by former beyondblue chief executive Dawn O’Neil.

Council community and culture manager Jill Karena said the workshop found there was a need to improve access to services, reduce the stigma around suicide and increase support for families and carers.

She said data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that suicide was the leading cause of death in the Macedon Ranges between 1989-2010.

“The rate of suicide is trending upwards in the Macedon Ranges, which is opposite

health and its key program Live4Life is very successful.”

Cr John Connor said the prevention plan was the next step in tackling the issue.

‘‘A key aim of the action plan will be to break the silence on a topic that is rarely talked about,’’ he said.

“If there’s someone you know that is not travelling well or you have not seen for a while, don’t just think about getting in touch – make the effort to phone, visit or have a coffee.”

For help or more information, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit www.lifeline.org.au.

Silence broken on mental health

A ground-breaking initiative that promotes good mental health in primary school children is being adopted by schools in Macedon and Sunbury. KidsMatter Primary, which aims to improve mental health and wellbeing, has been adopted in one in four Australian schools, including Riddles Creek Primary School.

The school began implementing KidsMatter in 2012, building on its social emotional learning (SEL) program You Can Do It.

According to vice-principal Amelia Desormeaux, the school tries to put as much emphasis on a child’s mental well-being as on their physical well-being.

KidsMatter is implemented over two to three years, and focuses on strengthening children’s social and emotional skills and helping adults to recognise and help kids who may be at risk.

Ms Desormeaux said the school followed a four-pronged approach.

“First is really trying to engender a positive

school community, creating a sense of belonging and being open and friendly,” she said. “The second component is the SEL program which is You Can Do It, explicitly teaching coping strategies in the classroom, like getting along, organisation, resilience, persistence and confidence.

“The third part is working in partnership with parents and carers to develop specific relationships with individual families and understand they have individual needs.

“The fourth component is helping our work with the allied health industry and health professionals with kids who do have mental health difficulties.”

Ms Desormeaux said the program was “fantastic” and an important part of childhood education.

A short walk to Sunbury Square shopping centre, medical facilities and the train station, this neat unit with a single garage and extensive paving at the front for extra parking will have young couples and investors lining up. On entry, there’s a good-sized lounge room, and an area next to the kitchen is plenty big enough for table and chairs. Each of the two spacious bedrooms has built-in wardrobes; one has access to a two-way bathroom. The toilet is separate. The meals area opens to a paved courtyard so, come warmer weather, there’s a spot to sit with friends and soak up the sunshine. The property also has a garden shed.

On about 2210 square metres and a short walk to kindergarten, primary school and sports facilities, this is a place that’s been completely renovated and ready to welcome new owners. Of the four bedrooms, two have built-in robes and one’s ideal for guests. The main has walk-in wardrobe and en suite. A big laundry adjoins a mud room. Made for the pell-mell of family life, there are multiple living zones: a lounge-dining room with cathedral ceiling and fireplace, a comfortable family room, a sunroom or rumpus area and a home office/computer room. The country-style kitchen has loads of bench space and cupboards, a pantry, and 900mm gas cooker. Along with a rear deck, the wide front verandah is the spot for outdoor relaxation, and a tradie will appreciate the big shed/workshop with concrete floor, power and lockable storeroom. New fittings and fixtures, floorboards, broadband, pay TV access, wood heater and double garage are included.

One for devotees of period styling and/or savvy buyers looking for the solidity and first-rate standards of an owner-build, this faultlessly presented house, garden and work/tradie site also happens to be in Gisborne’s own ‘Toorak’ neighbourhood.

It’s the kind of house that sings a Victorian tune: deep cornices, painted rosettes, leadlight, fretwork, brass light switches, picture rails bisecting two-toned paintwork, soft-green floral Axminster carpet, rosy capping tiles, diamond pattern flooring and stencil work on walls.

There are three bedrooms, two down one end (with robes and ceiling fans), where there is also a tiled office/hobby room with garage access, and the main bathroom with heat lamp, claw foot bath and period-style timber vanity unit. At the opposite end,

the main bedroom has four mirror-faced wardrobes and stained-glass bifolds to an en suite. A heated towel rail and dual basins set in a bespoke oaken bench/storage unit are treats, but the icing on the cake is private access to a fern-rimmed deck with in-ground heated spa.

Living areas are an open study, a big lounge room with bay window and cast-iron fireplace in a period-style surround, and a large family-meals room with wood heater, surround-sound and ceiling fan.

The kitchen is a modern affair, with glossy laminate benches, white cabinetry, walk-in pantry, InSinkErator, snazzy tapware, a wine fridge, concealed microwave nook, Technika dual wall ovens, electric cooktop and dishwasher.

A huge, pitched-roof pergola with

fretwork houses a mains gas barbecue, and an adjoining formal garden with water feature provides a peaceful outlook. Most garden beds are beautifully defined by box hedges and feature white roses, weeping cherries and dense plantings delivering shelter, privacy and serenity.

Through an arbour supporting a Celtic cascade vine, the huge side yard has a gravel circular driveway, parking space galore and a big shed/workshop with attached room set up as a teen’s bedroom.

Across the road from Gisborne Secondary College, the property has gas ducted heating, double insulation in walls and ceilings, gas ducted heating, water tank and a double garage.

“The SoundS of The CounTry”As a teenager I lived with my family on the corner ofCanterbury and Burke Roads in Camberwell – trams, trucks and lots of cars. As a young married womanwith small children we lived close to a very busyroad and then we moved to Newham, to a farm and Icouldn’t sleep! The silence kept me awake.

Living in the country is a complete change of paceand sounds. Most people will take advantage of alarge backyard and have a dog, or two, chooks ormaybe a pony.

I love the warble of the Magpies in the morning, thetwitter of numerous birds as they start their day witha song and the sound of the roosters crowing. Theseare the sounds of the country and to me they aresounds that say “all is well with the world”.

In the 1960’s a book was written entitled “The SilentSpring”. It was quite a controversial book and lookedat the use of chemicals and the impact on nature inparticular the birds. What a sad sad world it would beif we lost the raucous screech of the Cockatoos andthe laugh of the Kookaburras. What a sad day it wouldbe if the family dog was silenced, the lambs stoppedbleating and the roosters stopped announcing thebreaking of day.

Yes the sounds of the country are very different tothose of the city but would I exchange them for thescream of police sirens, the roar of constant traffic –no way!

Give me a bleating lamb, a crowing rooster, a laughingKookaburra any day!

A common criticism of real estate agents is that they don’t get back to buyers who have taken the timeto tell them what they are looking for. That is frustrating for customers and damaging to the profession’sreputation. Our approach guarantees you will always hear from us the moment we list a property thatmatches what you are looking for. Simply register your requirements online or at our office, and you canbe notified by text message or email of new properties the instant they become available.People selling through us love it because it improves our chances of selling their home before traditionalmarketing gets underway. Our buyers are just as impressed because they receive regular and nonintrusiveupdates. It’s all driven through our website and it delivers customer service wins for everyone.Plenty of local agents talk about their buyer database, but how many of them are willing to disclose howmany buyers they have before you sign up with them? At present we have over 2,200 subscribers to ourdatabase, call us to see how many real buyers might be interested in your home before you put it up forsale.

“Location, location, location” is the well-known catch-cry when it comes to looking for a new home. Butfor those planning to sell, there’s another rule that it can pay to remember and that’s “detail, detail, detail”.Careful planning and a just a little investment in sprucing up your home can deliver real financial results. The décor, layout and furnishings may have suited your lifestyle perfectly over the years, but a range ofpeople will be coming through to inspect it and you need to see it from their point of view. There aredozens of things that will add up to give a potential buyer an overall impression of your home and it isimportant this impression is as positive as possible.“Here are some tips on how to best prepare your home for the market to maximise buyer interest and, ultimately, the price you will receive. Get rid of clutter, Consider a paint job, Consider re-configuring rooms,Tidy the garden, Put away the pet bowls, Clean, and clean again.Your First National agent will be able tooffer advice on the best steps to take for the most return. Just remember, it’s the little details that canmake the most difference.”

Living in a small country community has its advantages, like being kept in the know of what’s happening

around our town. The Hume City Council has adopted a no tolerance policy to parking on nature strips

or in other specially marked parking areas. Footpaths, nature strips and dividing strips are constructed for

pedestrian traffic only and are not designed to carry vehicles. Council has a duty of care to ensure that

footways and nature strips are safe for residents and pedestrians. In addition to contravening the Road

Safety Road Rules, parking on nature strips can create a range of problems including damage to kerb and

channel, damage to house drain connections and damage to underground services.

Understandably, people sometimes use the nature strip because they feel it is safer than parking on the

road, especially in streets that are narrow. However the reality is that parking fully or partially on nature

strips and footpaths, regardless of the intention, is illegal. So we just want to give people a bit of a heads

up, that if choose to flout the rules, you will potentially get a ticket!

First impressions count. If you like something at first sight the image remains with you for a long time. So

in this brave new world of ours, the world of the internet, the use of photography and video has become

the most popular selling tool. As the first introduction to your home is often a perusal of photographs

on the internet, it is most important that they are of a high quality, and that time and effort is taken to

ensure that your property is shown to its best advantage. We at Dunlop Real Estate are very experienced

in the preparation of a quality photographic display of your property for both the internet and for sales

brochures. We employ professional photographers and videographers who are skilled and experienced

in this area. Getting the feel of your house is of paramount importance. Choosing the right angles,

perspective, light and features takes skill and showing the best of any views is critical.

Similarly a beautiful garden, particularly if it seems to flow into a room is a nice touch and must be

emphasised. Remember that these days most people shop on the internet, and this is not confined to

consumables. Many property sales, particularly to overseas buyers or expatriates are triggered by their

initial internet research. Our interest in all aspects of the real estate industry is directed at offering the

best possible service to our clients. If you have an interest in any real estate sale, purchase or letting feel

free to call me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our offices and Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.

MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU NEWS

35 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 17, 2014

Free wine. Now that got your attention. A few weeks ago, Burgundy-based Australian

winemaker Jane Eyre recommended tasting as much wine as possible to get a good idea about what you like.

Eyre wasn’t talking about liking chardonnay above sav blanc or shiraz before cabernet sauvignon, but getting to know your favourite grapes better.

Chardonnay-lovers should get to know the difference between the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Burgundy and Chablis.

You don’t need to be a lawyer, surgeon or chief executive and have an iron-clad liver to do this. You don’t need to be a wine writer either.

Every weekend, and on the occasional weeknight, Melbourne’s better wine shops host tastings of local and imported wines.

These can be pretty special tastings, too. More often than not the wines are poured by the producer.

One week it will be a local winemaker pouring and talking about their wines and the next a Bordelais talking about the value of merlot in their wines or a riesling producer talking about the way residual sugar affects their wines.

Often, the wines are offered at a discount if bought on the day of the tasting.

I’ve learnt so much about wine at these events – my dad and I were regulars at the Prince Wine Store in South Melbourne for years – and have a stash of the wines I bought at these events in my cellar.

Every time I open one of the bottles, the conversations are brought back to life, the memory of the first tasting enhancing the wine’s enjoyment even more.

Ben Thomas finds some of the best places to try before you buy

Sign up at the shops’ mailing lists online or in-store to find out when the tastings are. A few of the Saturday tastings in winter are after the early kids’ activities and before the footy – leaving just enough time to select a wine or two for dinner or the cellar.

Prince Wine Store \ Tastings, which vary from regions to wine styles, run most Saturdays 11am-1pm. 177 Bank Street, South Melbourne. www.princewinestore.com.au

Pei Modern \ This city restaurant regularly hosts local independent winemakers for a couple of hours on Fridays from 4.30pm – a perfect start to the weekend. Collins Place, 45 Collins Street, city. www.peimodern.com.au

Armadale Cellars \ Armadale Cellars runs regular structured tastings, often for a small fee, rather than at a set time each week. 813-817 High Street, Armadale. www.armadalecellars.com.au

Barrique Healesville \ Meet a Yarra Valley winemaker every Friday from 5-7pm. 260 Maroondah Highway, Healesville. barriquewinestore.com.au

Rathdowne Cellars \ Tastings run most Saturdays from 2-4pm at this wine shop every suburb wishes it could call its own. 348 Rathdowne Street, North Carlton. rathdownecellars.com.au

Nicks \ Nicks closed its Armadale store a couple of years ago, but its Doncaster East home always has open bottles of current-release wines on the counter to taste and try before you buy. 10-12 Jackson Court, Doncaster East. www.nicks.com.au

Vintage Cellars \ Tasting time at Vintage Cellars stores is 4-7pm Fridays and 12-2pm on Saturdays. Sign up for Vintage Cellars membership to be kept abreast of tastings at your local shop. All stores. www.vintagecellars.com.au

Randall’s Geelong \ There’s often a theme to the tastings at Randalls: 4-7pm on Fridays and from 11am on Saturday until the last bottle is empty. These range from a local selection, a range of wines that’s new to the store or a varietal mix. 324-326 Pakington Street, Newtown.www.randalls.net.au

36 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 17, 2014

SPORT

By Tara Murray

There were emotional scenes in the rooms after Sunbury Kangaroos defeated Diggers Rest in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday, with Roos coach Chris Meacham announcing his resignation.

Meacham, coaching the team for the first time since a farming accident on May 3, told players and supporters he was taking time off to focus on his recovery from shoulder and knee injuries.

“I have to have a year and a half off work to recover from surgeries, including one on Wednesday,” Meacham told Star Weekly.

“I’d like to get back after that, but you don’t know what will happen.”

Meacham’s last game in the coaching box is one he will remember, with the Kangaroos putting in a dominant display to win 15.10 (100) to 5.10 (40).

“I have had six weeks off work and watched some AFL clubs at training to get ideas,’’

Meacham said. “I tried to mix it up, as we have not been playing how we should be.

‘‘To beat them by 10 goals was amazing. We needed a scalp [of one of the top teams] if we are to finish top three. Maybe we can slide under the radar a bit.”

Meacham said it was ‘‘days like this’’ he treasured the most from his time as a player and coach.

“The [2012] premiership was amazing, but the highlight is these blokes,’’ he said.

“It’s a really good family club and the support has been amazing.

“I had sponsors and four under-18 players come to visit me while I was in hospital just to make sure that I was OK.

‘‘I don’t know many people who could say they have had that.”

A decision on who will coach the club for the rest of the season has not been made.

The mood in the Burras’ rooms was one of shock mixed with anger.

Having beaten second-placed Riddell only

two weeks ago, the Burras were completely outplayed by the Kangaroos.

The Sunbury side was better at ground level and their defence made it hard for the Burras to score. When they did, the Kangaroos responded immediately.

“It was terrible, they came to play and we didn’t,” Burras coach Shaun Sims said.

“I thought we controlled the game for patches, but not for long enough.

“They deserved to win. We didn’t have too many winners on the field.

“Our best is good enough to match it with the best sides.

‘‘But we are just too inconsistent at the moment.”

In other results, Romsey thrashed Lancefield by 101 points, 20.14 (134) to 4.9 (33).

Rockbank was way too strong for Macedon, 22.13 (145) to 7.3 (45), Riddell defeated Woodend-Hesket by 64 points and Rupertswood was clinical against Kilmore, winning 23.20 (158) to 2.1 (13).

FFVSunbury United suffered a 2-1 loss to the Fawkner Blues in FFV State League 1 north west on Saturday. United is now 10th on the ladder, with three wins from 10 matches. Kyneton had the bye in State League 5 west.

Bendigo Football LeagueKyneton’s comeback against Eaglehawk fell short, with the Tigers losing 17.16 (118) to 18.3 (111). The Tigers got off to a slow start and were 47 points down at half-time. Led by Ben Weightman, who kicked seven goals for the game, the Tigers kicked 11 majors in the third quarter to lead by 10 points at the final change. But the Tigers ran out of legs in the last quarter, kicking just one goal. Joel Stevenson was best for the Tigers.

VWFLSunbury Lions had a massive win against Redan in Victorian Women’s Football League division 2 on Sunday. The Lions got off to a good start, taking a three-goal lead by quarter-time. The margin could have been greater if not for poor kicking. The Lions extended the lead to 28 points by half-time, and the game was as good as over. Sunbury kept Redan to one goal for the second half, kicking six themselves to win 11.11 (77) to 3.0 (18). Natasha Hardy kicked three goals for the Lions, with Brooke Surgeon best on ground. The Lions are two games clear in fourth spot on the ladder.

MCDFLTrentham lost to Newstead by 13 points in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League on Saturday. The Saints started the better of the two teams but led by just 10 points at quarter-time despite all their hard work. Trentham continued to pepper the goals in the second quarter, but was again plagued by inaccuracy and lost the lead. The Kangaroos managed to stay in front for the rest of the game, winning 12.14 (86) to 10.13 (73). Luke Whitehorse was best for the Saints.

VRLSunbury issued a warning to its Victorian Rugby League rivals with a 90-10 win against Doveton. The match was all but over at half-time, with the Tigers leading 30-0. Not content with the scoreline, the Tigers upped the ante in the second half, finishing with 16 tries for the game. Reuben Rennie and Junior Kirisome scored four tries each.

Winning run comes to an end as Cannons fall silent Calder Cannons’ seven-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of NSW-ACT Rams in the TAC Cup competition in Sydney on Saturday.

Compounding the Cannons’ bad weekend was a shoulder injury to star midfielder Touk Miller while he was playing for Vic Metro in the NAB under-18 national championships.

Playing interstate for the only time this season, the Cannons were easily beaten 15.13 (103) to 12.5 (77) by the more aggressive Rams.

The Cannons keep second place on the table but have fallen four points behind leader Oakleigh chargers.

Cannons coach Andrew Jago said there were no excuses.

“They were very good and they outworked and outplayed us,” he said. “We had a few dramas, like the bus not turning up and having

to catch taxis to the game, but that wasn’t why we lost. This will give us a chance to reassess where we are, and it gives us things to work on.”

Jago said the side’s defensive efforts let them down against the Rams.

“We needed to win more contested ball on the inside, where we’re normally so good,” he said. “They comprehensibly beat us in the uncontested ball as well.”

He said his talls – Jayden Foster (four goals), Mark Kovacevic (2) and Reilly O’Brien –were the standouts in the loss.

As for whether Miller would miss games, Jago said the injury was still to be assessed.

Miller’s injury also soured Vic Metro’s good win against South Australia on Saturday.

Metro got out to a 32-point lead in the final term before holding off South Australia, who kicked three of the last four goals, to win 13.8 (86) to 10.12 (72).

After missing the last Vic Metro game, Cannons big man Pete Wright was one of Metro’s best with 29 hitouts, 16 disposals, 10 marks and three goals in the win.

“We’ve been happy with the form of our boys playing for Metro. Paul A’Hern, Damien Cavka and Matt Goodyear have all played well, as has Touk and now Pete,” Jago said.

The Cannons have a bye this weekend.

Riddells Creek netballer Ashley Cole is one of 12 players selected for the Victorian 12 years and under team.

Cole and 6000 others submitted applications or were nominated for the Victorian team that will compete at the School Sport Australia 12-year-old-and-under netball championships on the Gold Coast in August.

“I was very nervous when I tried out,” Cole said.

“I had to register online and go through the process with my school.

“I had to go to four trials where they had drills on how we passed the ball and a lot of games.”

Cole, who is in year 7 at Sunbury’s Salesian College, plays in the Macedon Ranges Netball Association, both in the local competition and for the association in representative encounters.

Her favoured positions are in mid-court – as it is with her favourite player, Melbourne Vixens’ Madi Robinson.

“I like them all [wing attack, wing defence and centre] as I get to run around,” Cole says. “I’m likely to play centre at the tournament, which will be very tough.”

The 12-year-old dreams of playing for the Melbourne Vixens or one of the other ANZ championship sides.

Between now and the titles, Cole has a busy schedule on top of her regular weekly matches.

“I don’t know many of the team, so we need to learn about each other,” she said.

“We will be training nearly every weekend in the lead-up to the event.”

She has made the Victorian side at her second attempt.

Selected, nervous or not

Riddells Creek’s Ashley Cole is prepared for a lot of hard work after being selected for the Victorian under-12 netball side. (Wayne Hawkins)

Sunbury Jets men’s and women’s sides were on the wrong end of their matches in Sunday’s Big V division 1 basketball.

In a double-header against the Southern Peninsula Sharks at Boardman Reserve, the bottom-of-the-table women’s side was up first against the ninth-placed Sharks.

The match ended in a heartbreaking loss for the Jets, 68-66 in a thrilling finish.

Scores were level at both quarter and half-time, and the Jets led by three points entering the final term. Sadly for the Jets, they weren’t in front when it mattered, just missing out on their second win for the season. Emmie O’Nial continued her good form to lead the Jets with 21 points and 18 rebounds.

The men’s match wasn’t so close, with the ladder-leading Sharks winning 93-81. Both teams shot at a high percentage from the field in the early going, but the visitors took a four-point lead at quarter-time.

After leading by eight at the half, the Sharks stepped up their game in the third term, shooting seven three-pointers to extend the lead to 16.

The Jets didn’t let the Sharks run away with the game in the final term and, as small consolation, won the quarter by four points.

Gavin Mitchell and Jay Boyle each scored 16 points for the Jets.

The men’s side will play the Altona Gators away on Sunday, while the women travel to Geelong to take on the Supercats.

Jets can’t shake off Sharks
