Church Staff Rev. Scott Stancil Pastor Ricky Stark Minister of Students & Education Carol Petty CDC Director Hayley Smith Ministry Intern Encourager THE FIRST BAPTIST LYMAN WEEK OF JANUARY 13, 2010 Blessings to you and Happy New Year! What an awesome Sunday we had this past week. God was so good to us. Sunday evening we had a brief business meeting that consisted of three recommendations by the Personnel Team, which were each unanimously approved. The first was to call Larry Arms as our part-time Building Superintendent effective Monday, January 11, 2010. Secondly, the church called Wade Rodgers to be our Interim Minister of Music, and Beth Arms to be our Assistant Interim Minister Of Music. Finally, the church reinstituted the Music Ministry Search Team from 2009 to make recommendations to our Personnel Team concerning our search for a Minister of Music. Praise God for His work through His people! Sunday morning was very special, as well. The message was The Road Ahead in 2010. I shared with the church seven Take Aways. 1. Pray for the church and the leadership of the church. 2. Trust leadership. 3. Put aside personal preferences. 4. Be true to your convictions. 5. Abide in absolutes (The Word of God) 6. Remember who we are! First Baptist Lyman… A. One Lord (Jesus is Savior and LORD>Let God show off!) B. One Fellowship (Ministry and Unity) C. One Purpose (To Build and Protect this Church) 7. Each member give minimally three hours a week: A. One hour in worship (either Sunday morning or Sunday evening) B. One hour in a small group (either Sunday School or a Covenant Group) C. One hour in service (Not a team, but an active role during services) The year ahead will involve a deeper study into the Word of God. It will demand of us that we deal with sin and not look the other way under any circumstances. Also, we must have a serious plan for calling a Preschool and Children’s Minister. Finally, we must be diligent to continue addressing the security of our ministries and facilities (including required background check for those working with young people under 18; policies; cameras; and keyless entries). Wow! If you weren’t here Sunday, you missed a bunch! More importantly, you were missed! I hope you are well and that you are planning to be with us this week. Sunday morning, we will answer the question, “Which father knows best?God Bless, Sunday 9:45 am Sunday School 11:00 am Morning Worship 5:30 pm Preschool & Children’s Activities 5:30 pm Evening Fellowship 6:00 pm Evening Worship Wednesday 5:20 - 5:45 pm Fellowship Meal 5:45 - 6:30 pm Children’s Choirs 6:30 - 7:00 pm Children’s Missions 5:50 - 6:00 pm Praise and Prayer 6:00 - 7:00 pm Covenant Groups 7:10 pm Adult Choir NON-PROFIT ORG U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 14 January Birthdays 1 - Lewis Harvey 1 - Josh Massey 1 - Ann McMakin 2 - Betty Whitmire 3 - Jeremy McKinney 4 - Andrew Bradley 6 - Caylie Walker 7 - Clayton Bradley 7 - Harold Bullard 7 - Lisa Eubanks 9 - Buddy Eubanks, Jr. 9 - Shanda Owens 9 - Todd Wright 10 - Raymond Morrow 11 - Ginger Ryals 12 - Mavis Eledge 12 - Betty Knight 13 - Rachel Fillipetti 14 - Ruth Dobson 14 - Vicki Hadden 16 - Patsy Baldwin 18 - Jack Morgan 19 - Larry Arms 19 - Amanda Young 20 - Sandra Eubanks 20 - Fred Greer 21 - Kaci Snow 23 - Marshall Alexander 23 - Margaret Mayfield 23 - Betsy Meccia 26 - Alysa Lee 26 - Kevin Lee 29 - Wade Brewer 29 - Nancy Eubanks Please wish these individuals a Happy Birthday! Covenant Groups are back And boy is it going to be an exciting semester as we discover who we are how God has gifted us and where He would have us serve Let me just echo what Pastor Scott said this past Sunday being a part of a Covenant Group could very well be one the most spiritually significant things you do this year And it is not because Covenant Groups are anything fancy or have some complicated processmdashin fact thatrsquos the beauty of them they are quite simple and laid back but for those who have gotten plugged into one Covenant Groups have provided some rich and profound experiences Covenant Groups help us shatter the completely erroneous notion that Christianity is about ldquoMe and Jesusrdquomdashand we begin to realize we were wired for relationships and Godrsquos purpose for Christians is to be a part of intimate and authentic community so that we can be sharpened and made to be more like Jesus In our Covenant Groups this semester we will continue to look at Sundayrsquos message and apply it to our lives in a customized way for each individual (and let me remind you that you can submit your questions regarding Sundayrsquos sermon on our website by clicking on ldquoCONNECT Join a Covenant Grouprdquo on the homepage your question just might be up for discussion that Wednesday night) We will also continue to be in groups of the same gender so that we can continue to have opportunities of accountability and openness in sharing what we are going through But we are also excited this semester about beginning a new study called PLACE through our Covenant Groups and during the course of the semester everyone will have the chance through his or her Covenant Group to discover the personality God designed him or her with the spiritual gifts He has equipped him or her with what passions and callings God has given him or her and how he or she can use all of these things to get plugged in to First Lyman and be an active member of the body of Christ and of the kingdom of God Pretty exciting stuff huh Through Covenant Groups we are going to be able to connect with one another more deeply discover greater riches in Godrsquos Word and find out who we are and what God has called us to be I donrsquot know about you but Irsquom pumped about getting started Join us this Wednesday
