Part 1:

Install EndNote Add records to Endnote • Directly export from the databases (e.g. ProQuest) or Google scholar • Import RIS file • Online search • Input manually


Download (both EndNote X6 for Windows or Mac are available in the library website)


File > New


Enter your filename. File default extension is enl. Then save


Interface


Export from Databases

E.g ProQuest 1. search and select records in ProQuest 2. Export to Endnote


2. Select the records you want to export

1. Search


3. Export/Save


4. Select “EndNote”


5. Click “Continue”


Or import from the file RIS

Select “EndNote” or “RIS”

Click “Continue”


Google Scholar Select “Settings”

Select “EndNote”

“Save”


Select “Import into EndNote”



Import file to Endnote

If some databases such as PubMed could not automatically export to the endnote, you can use “Import” PubMed

Select “File”

Select “MEDLINE”

Click “Create File”


Save the txt file


Import records from PubMed to Endnote

File>Import>File>choose import file> Import Options (PubMed)


Successfully imported


Online Search

• Select the online resource • Enter search criteria in the above boxes • Results are shown


Input citation manually

References>New Reference



**Remember to choose “References Type”

• Enter the information • Click Spell Check icon for spell checking

File > Save



Click “minimize” to go back to main page


Insert pdf, website & images

First click the record


You can insert URL, attach file & figure etc

1. Click URL 2. Paste/enter URL then “Save”.

(“Clear” for remove URL)

Select “File attachments”, right click mouse >File Attachments> Attach file

File can be in various formats such as pdf, word, excel, jpg & wmv


Part B: Manage records

• Group • Find duplicate bibliographic records


Group Group>Create Group

Type “group” name


Select the records (shift + left click of mouse)


Drag & drop to the group e.g “Assignment 1”


Create Smart Group

Group> Create Smart Group

A Smart Group is collected by a search strategy


Create Groups from Groups

Groups> Create from Groups Create from group is collected automatically as a result of a search strategy from different groups


Find Duplicates

References> Find Duplicates



Part C: Cite While You Write Remember to open EndNote,

then go to your word file

Edit the citation

e.g. Change “2004” to “2008”, then save the record
