INTRODUCTION

EndNote Web is a web-based tool that helps you to work with your citations. It streamlines your work by citing references and creating a bibliography in a designated style with just one click. This means you spend your time writing, NOT citing, the paper. (Although it is helpful addition to any writing project, EndNote Web does not proofread your paper. That is your responsibility.)

With this tool, you can:~ gather up to 10,000 references using any computer (on-campus, off-campus, personal computer)~ create a personalized database of articles, book titles, websites, etc.~ easily import citations from resources into your database.~ add in-text citations to your paper in a variety of styles. (i.e. AMA, APA 6th, NLM)~ automatically generate a bibliography in a variety of styles.

Getting Started with EndNote Web

1. Register for an EndNote Web account. **

Start at the Library Database page or a Community Resource page. Go to the Web of Knowledge Open - My EndNote Web

**Register from on-campus to have roaming (off-campus usage) privileges. ** To keep your roaming privileges active, login from a campus computer every 12 months.

Sign up for an account if this is the first time you are using EndNote Web.

My References is the start page for EndNote Web and shows all references within your library.

~ Selecting a group under All My references will show reference information, such as author, title, publication year, etc., for that specific group.

~ Click the checkboxes to the left of each reference to group them. Click Add to group to add references to a specific group. (A single reference can be in multiple groups.) Using ‘Delete’ will send the reference to Trash.

The Collect tab is used to import references into your EndNote Web library.

~Online search will search and import database citations from within EndNote Web. ~ HINT: this works best when importing a specific citation. Help is found http://www.myendnoteweb.com/help/en_us/ENW/hsr_onlinesearch.htm)

~New Reference is used when entering references not found in a citation database, such as book titles, websites, etc. ~ HINT: Help is foundhttp://www.myendnoteweb.com/help/en_us/ENW/hsr_create.htm.)

Use the Organize tab to create, delete or rename your Groups (up to 500) to help categorize your references.

~ Your references can be shared with other EndNote Web registered users. (HINT: See the Home> Library Home > EndNote page http://www.midwestern.edu/Library_Home/Tools/Endnote.html for detailed instructions on Sharing Groups.)

~ Others’ Groups are groups developed by other EndNote Web account holders that are shared with you. (EXAMPLE: Use when working on a group presentation.)

~ When searching multiple databases, it is possible to have duplicate records in your library. The Find Duplicates tab compares the Author, Title, Publication Year and Reference Type fields to identify them.

The Format tab is EndNote Web’s multipurpose tool to create a bibliography outside of a paper.

~ The Bibliography feature shows your references, in a specified style and file format to e-mail, save or print. ~Cite While You Write Plug-In is for personal computers that do not have EndNote software installed. ~To format your paper’s citations and bibliography without using EndNote Web plug-in or EndNote software, use Format Paper.

~Export References allows for the exporting of references in one of several standard export styles, as JAMA or APA 6th, to your e-mail, saving or printing for alternative uses.

The Options menu is used to edit personal information, as your password or email address, and to download installation information on personal computers.

Using EndNote Web to write your paper

1. Open a Word document and select the EndNote Web toolbar. If the EndNote X3 tab is found in the Menu bar, use the following instructions to change it to the EndNote Web menu:

2. Check that ‘Instant Formatting’ is turned on, enabling your bibliography to be updated along with your in-text citations.

1st: Click arrow in lower-right corner of Bibliography ribbon.2nd: Open ‘Instant Formatting’ tab.3rd: Confirm ‘Instant Formatting is currently on.’

On public computers, DO NOT USE ‘remember my address and password’.

1st: Select Preferences.2nd: Open Application tab and select EndNote Web from the Application drop-down box.3rd: Enter personal EndNote Web logons.

3. Position the cursor in the document where the citation should appear.

4. Find citations from your EndNote Web Library to insert into the document.

Enter a search term to find the reference or references to insert. NOTE: The term must be a minimum of three characters and can be the year of publication.

5. Edit or change your citations with the Edit Citations tool.

For more details on adding or excluding information within a citation, adding or deleting a citation, or changing the order of citations in a group, see EndNote Web Help: Edit citation(s) http://www.myendnoteweb.com/help/en_us/ENW/hw_editcitation.htm .

When finished editing the citation, click OK to close the window.

6. The Bibliography Style list provides many style options that determine the field order, font style, indenting, and punctuation in the citations and bibliography.

To update the citations/bibliography after editing, deleting or relocating phrases, sentences or paragraphs or to reformat the document after changing the bibliographic style, click the Update Citations and Bibliography tool.

Formatting the Bibliography

1st: Click arrow in lower-right corner of Bibliography ribbon.2nd: The EndNote Web Format Bibliography window opens.3rd: Change bibliography style. HINT: The bibliography Style can also be changed in the EndNote Web Format Bibliography window or by using the Bibliography Style list. (See previous page.)

By using the Layout tab in the EndNote Web Format Bibliography window, you can:

~ modify the font and size of the citation references,~ title your bibliography, ~ number, indent and space your bibliography
