What is a Gondola Lift?

y It is a type of aerial lift, often called cable car, which issupported and propelled by cables from above. [1]

y

It is usually driven by an engine or an electric motor.

y In construction sites, it serves as the elevator for going up or

down the floors.

y It also serves as a platform for construction workers whoinstalls window glasses or paints the building.

II. Causes of the Problem

8/6/2019 Eng13 - Group 4 - Workplace Problem

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/eng13-group-4-workplace-problem 15/23

1. Scaffoldings or the gondola lift support is weak.

2. Gondola lift overloading.

3. Gondola Lift is not registered to the government,

therefore safety of operation is questionable.4. Lack of training and information to the construction

workers.

5. No safety officer present in the construction site.

6. Lack of warning signs.

III. Solution to the Problem

8/6/2019 Eng13 - Group 4 - Workplace Problem

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/eng13-group-4-workplace-problem 17/23

Solution:

1. Construction engineers should design the scaffoldingsand other supports for the gondola lift very well. Thisincludes proper analysis of design and materials to be

used.

2. Proper operation for the Gondola Lift should befollowed. Construction workers must be informed.

A gondola operator should be assigned as well.

3. Gondola Lift should be registered to the governmentagency (DOLE in Philippines) so that they can checkedand approve if your gondola lift is safe.

4. Each construction site should have a safety officer, whois responsible for informing the constructions worker aswell as ensuring the overall safety of the construction

workers , equipments and site.

Other safety measures to follow:

y Construction workers should always wear PPE (PersonalProtective Equipments) such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes

and safety harness. These should add extra protection againstworkplace accidents.

y The management should put warning sign which indicatesthe maximum capacity of the gondola lift.

y Finally, we should always be alert!
