Work in ProgressWork in Progress Q11: Progress

Has someone talked to you about your progress in the last six months? Have you been recognized in the last seven days? These questions are ones that postal employees are least likely to agree with on the Postal Pulse survey. Both questions concern getting feedback on how one’s performance is perceived. But is feedback necessary to do a job? Not really. If people know what they are expected to do and have the materials and equipment to do it, they can perform the job.

Feedback is what helps the employee do the job to the best of his or her abilities. If basic needs are the motor of the engine, feedback is the fuel that keeps it running. Feedback is a two-way street, however, and both managers and employees have responsibilities to start the conversation. The key is to ask. Employees who don’t feel like they are having enough conversations about progress should simply ask for more feedback. Managers also should focus on asking rather than telling employees these key questions: “What is going well (or not so well)?” and “What more I can do to support you?”

Give ThanksGive Thanks We wish you all a happy and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday! We ask: what are you thankful for this holiday?

“I am thankful for the love shared with my family.” Linda Gallant, Equal Employment Opportunity specialist, White Plains, NY

“I am thankful for 29 years with the Postal Service. Not only has USPS afforded me security while I raised my children, the multitude of opportunities has allowed me to obtain a diverse set of skills adding to my personal growth.”

Joyce Tomaskovic, supervisor of customer services, Southfield, MI

“I have been with the Postal Service for more than 42 years. I have always considered it my business to make my customers have enjoyable visits while still trying to connect and have a personal relationship with them. I want them to come back because of the interaction and service. I have enjoyed my career as I am coming to the end of it. It is not an easy decision when you enjoy your job as much as I do. I really do not consider it so much as work but as enjoyment. I encourage

each of you to do your job as though it is your business and treat your customers as friends and I can guarantee you that it will become a pleasure to do your job. I encourage management to recognize employees who do their jobs without having to be watched all the time. Those employees are worth their weight in gold. I thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts. Be thankful for all we have! Happy Thanksgiving!”

David Stipe, lead retail associate, Lancaster, PA

Engagement & Community

Fayetteville, NC, Receives Support During Hurricane Matthew Flooding In response to Hurricane Mathew flooding, the Maintenance Technical Support Center (MTSC) sent significant resources to the Fayetteville, NC, area to assist in equipment assessments, machine moves, and restoring mail processing operations to the Fayetteville Processing and Distribution Center. In total, eight network support technicians (NST) were deployed before, during, and after the hurricane. They were:

1. Joe Biggs, North Houston P&DC

2. Shawn Cavallo, MTSC Norman, OK

3. Keith Gaines, Greensboro, NC, P&DC

4. Muncy Henderson, North Houston P&DC

5. Bob Levy, Kansas City, MO, P&DC

6. James Lynch, Northern Virginia P&DC

7. Del McCoy, Richmond, VA, P&DC

8. Brian O’Connor, Raleigh P&DC

Each of these technicians contributed in a meaningful way to ensure postal operations were carried out safely and efficiently. Our thanks go out to the entire MTSC team, who did a fantastic job of supporting the field during this flooding disaster. The relief operations moved three DBCS machines from Rocky Mount, NC, to Fayetteville, which began Oct. 13 and concluded Oct. 18. During this time, these employees transported the mothballed DBCS Machine more than 92 miles (1.5-hour drive time) into an empty postal warehouse that had to be completely rewired to support the machines. They powered up the machines, repaired and replaced warn parts, and fine-tuned them to allow the machines to process mail for the Fayetteville mailing area. The HQ Maintenance Operations Team would like to thank MTSC and these determined NSTs for the tremendous effort put forth and the results produced. It meant a lot to the folks of Mid-Carolina District to be supported by MTSC during this natural disaster. Thank you as well to all employees who assisted during this troubling time for the selfless support and dedication to the United States Postal Service. We appreciate all that each of you do, day in day out, who are seen and unseen. Without your support we would not have been successful.

HQ Maintenance Operations Support Specialist Wayne Griffith, Linthicum, MD
