Pratt & Whitney Aircraft's JT8D-200 series engines can be transported in a variety of ways to support airline operations around the world. This booklet answers general questions regarding JT8D-200 series engine transportation methods. Each transport method is described briefly, along with highlights of related special equipment and supporting data.

The topics covered include:

- Engine transport stands - Air transport - Truck transport - Sea transport - Packaging and preservation - Module shipment

JT8D-200 series engines are transported

on transport stands designed to be used for air, truck or sea transport. A typical engine transport stand, shown in the accompanying illustration, incorporates specific design features necessary for engine support and protection during cargo handling and transit. In addition to supporting the engine, the transport stand must include features to provide shock dampening, load distribution, forklift compatibility, ground mobility, and provisions for tie-down.

Vendor Purchase Performance

Specifications for an engine transport stand and for a rigid enclosure for a transport stand are available on request. These specifications can be used by operators to establish technical requirements for stands and enclosures with their transport equipment suppliers.

Engine transport stands developed by

different vendors from the same purchase performance specification may have some physical differences. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the procuring agency to ensure that the transport stand has been developed to be compatible with the purchase performance specification and the aircraft in which it will be used.

SAME STAND SERVES AIR, LAND, AND SEA TRANSPORT

JT80-200 series engines in transport stands can be carried in the aircraft indicated below:

*As delivered, freight on board, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft.

Due to differences in air cargo loading techniques and latching systems, as well as transport stand design dimensions and pallet dimensions, it is recommended that the engine shipper

review the cargo loading manual for the specific aircraft to be used to insure that proper loading and latching procedures can be accomplished.

TRUCK TRANSPORT

Engines mounted in transport stands may be easily transported by truck. It is recommended that the tractor trailer combination used for this transportation mode be equipped with pneumatic shock absorbers (air suspension ride) to dampen vibration. Transport stand shock mounting is required for truck transport of JT8D-200 Series Engines.

SEA TRANSPORT POSSIBLE WITH SPECIAL PACKAGING JT8D-200 Series Engines can be transported by sea. However, the engine requires special packaging and preservation for protection against the corrosive salt-water environment. A rigid enclosure design is recommended for this mode of engine transportation. The engine should be protected with desiccant material and packaged in a moisture vapor impervious (MVI) envelope. If JT80-200 Series Engines are to be transported by sea, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Support Equipment Engineering, Middletown, Connecticut, should be contacted for related packaging and preservation requirements. PACKAGING AND PRESERVATION ALLOWS ENGINE TO BE STORED Engines being prepared for truck or air transportation and subsequent storage require packaging and, in some cases, preservation depending upon the length and conditions of storage. Engine preservation schedules and preservation requirements are described in the JT80-200Series Engine Manual (Section 72-00-00 Storage -01) as well as the airframer supplied DC-9 Super 80 Powerplant Buildup Manual.
