The Bruce Pearl Machine
• Our Rube-Goldberg contraption uses a series of actions to complete a ball flying through a basketball hoop
• First a weighted club is released and collides with a golf ball
• Next, the golf ball rolls along the box and hits the tennis ball.
• Then, the tennis ball rolls off the box and hits the spoon
• Finally, the spoon launches the nerf ball through the hoop.
Calculations
• Potential Energy of the club using mgh=1/2mv²• Impulse from the collision between the club and
the golf ball using vgb=(mcvc)/mgb
• Impulse from the collision between the golf ball and the tennis ball using vtb=(mgbvgb)/mtb
• Velocity of the tennis ball when it hits the spoon using mgh=1/2mv2
• Velocity of release of the nerf ball using projectile motion
Calculations
• Velocity of club when it hits the ball• V=1.638 ft/s• Velocity of golf ball after club hits it• V=14.56 ft/s• Velocity of tennis ball after golf ball hits it• V=10.92 ft/s• Velocity of tennis ball when it falls off the block• V=5.433 ft/s • Velocity of release of nerf ball • V=1.30 ft/s
Masses
• Weighted stick: 400 grams
• Tennis ball: 60 grams
• Nerf ball: 5 grams
• Spoon: 5 grams
• Golf ball:45 grams
Approximate costs
• Swinging mass and structure with duct tape- $8 • Nerf ball and basketball goal- $5• Two boxes- $1• Golf ball- $1• Tennis ball- $1• Spoon- $1• Violet block (fulcrum)- $1• Total Costs- $18
