Instructions:
Circle the main idea in each paragraph and the concluding sentence in the article.
Underline the supporting details throughout.
Everyone who buys a lottery ticket imagines how different life will be after they
hit the jackpot. And in fact, many lottery winners say it has helped them to buy a new
home, take a dream vacation, or send their children to the best schools. Often, winners
put the money to good use by starting a charity or setting up a business. For them,
sudden wealth brings happiness and stability. Yet, in some cases, winning a jackpot
turns out to be more of a curse than a blessing. Winners who have no experience with
money often lose it as quickly as they won it and end up going broke. One common
problem among lottery winners is unwise investment. New winners often invest large
amounts of money in business that they know little about. If the business does poorly,
they put more and more money into it, trying to keep from losing their initial investment.
Another pitfall for jackpot winners is needy friends and family. Winners are often
surprised at how many relatives and acquaintances show up asking for help in the form
of loans, new houses, or new cars. Because they won the money rather than earned it,
they find it hard to say no to these requests.
In some cases, lottery winners have problems with alcohol, drugs, or gambling.
They may think that sudden wealth will solve these problems, but they quickly learn that
money might only make things worse. After winning a lot, they watch their fortunes
disappear at bars or into slot machines. So, while some people gain financial security
when they win the lottery, others experience disappointment or even ruin because they
are not ready for financial success.

(oración declaratoria) a sustentar.
