ENGLISH MIDTERM
Literary Terms◦Study the literary terms that you received at the beginning of the year. ◦These are on a double sided sheet that should be hole-punched and put in your binder.
Specifically…◦Inferences and conclusions
◦Inference- educated guess using what we know from the text. The author might not say something explicitly but we understand if from context clues.
◦Conclusion- coming to a decision based on things we know from the text as well as background information that we have from our own lives.
◦Context Clues: when we use information FROM THE TEXT (yes, we have to read it)
And...◦Central/Main Idea: The main concept that an author focuses on in a text. What is the text about?
◦Theme: The overall message of the story. What does the text mean, what do we or the characters learn?
Characters (you just got these notes)◦You will need to identify:
◦Protagonist◦Antagonist◦Narrator◦Foil◦Anti-Hero (if there is one)◦Round and Flat Characters◦Static and Dynamic Characters
Vocabulary◦You will need to use context clues to identify the meaning of an unknown word.
◦How do you do this?◦Read the sentence and the sentences around the unknown words
◦Think about words that you could replace the unknown word with and still have the sentence make sense.
Evidence ◦You will be asked to choose the best evidence to support some of your answers.
◦Think about what elements of the text BEST ANSWER THE QUESTION.

Grammar 2◦Subject-Verb Agreement (you have notes on this from the past)
◦If your subject is singular, then your verb must be singular.
◦If your subject is plural, then your verb must be plural.
◦Example: I goes to the story is NOT CORRECT.
Grammar 3◦When we are writing with quotations marks, the punctuation comes INSIDE the quotation.
◦Example: He said “I don’t like going to the store.”
◦Example: “I don’t like going to the store,” he said.
