BIODATA SUMMARY
YBHG TAN SRI DATUK SERI PANGLIMA LEE LAM THYE
YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Lee Lam Thye, the eldest son of an iron
fitter, was born on 30th December, 1946 in Ipoh, Perak. He completed his secondary
education in 1965 at St Michael's Institution, Ipoh. During his schooling years, he
was a diligent student and active in the Scouts movement as well as sports where
he represented his school in both table tennis and badminton. Ever since his earlydays as a student in Ipoh, he was profoundly interested in fostering the spirit of
unity among fellow students from different social backgrounds.
After completing his secondary education, he worked as a teacher and was
actively involved in trade union movement that fought particularly for commercial
workers' rights. Later in 1968, he was fittingly appointed as the Executive Secretary
of the National Union of Commercial Workers (NUCW). Subsequently, based on
socio-political aspirations at the time, in 1969, he decided to join the countrys
political arena and was subsequently elected as a wakil rakyat in the state of
Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur for more than two decades.
Throughout this period, his political struggle had always centered upon the basic
principles of welfare and safety of the people or the rakyat. However, after much
deliberation, he decided to retire from active political involvement in 1990.
In spite of all the challenges he has to face, he has persistently continued
serving the people and provided social services to fellow Malaysians from all walks
of life. He has consequently been acknowledged as one of the most renowned social

activists in Malaysia. Hitherto,, he has been appointed, among others, as Chairman
of the Executive Committee of National Unity MAPEN II, Chairman of Malaysias
Ministry of Health Standing Committee on Public Awareness of Organ Donation,
Chairman of the National Service Training Council (PLKN) Ministry of Defense
Malaysia and Chairman of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
Ministry of Human Resources. In addition, he is also a council member of theNational Economic Advisory Council (NEAC), the Human Rights Commission of
Malaysia (SUHAKAM), Member of the Royal Commission on the Improvement of
Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysian Police, Selangors Justice of
Peace, Advisory Board Member of Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Vice-President of Drug
Prevention Association Malaysia (PEMADAM), Member of the Board of Trustees of
1Malaysia Foundation and a number of other social organizations. Meanwhile, in the
private sector, he is the current Chairman of the Board of Trustees of S.P. Setia
Foundation, which is currently active in educational facilities improvement
programme in schools throughout Malaysia.
As a visionary social activist, he is indeed an avid reader and also has a deep
interest in writing. He has written and published several books related to social
unity, workers' rights, safety and welfare of employees as well as arts and culture.
His perpetual concern about and sensitivity towards key social issues and
challenges have been expressed in the form of articles published in newspapers,
magazines, proceedings and journals. He totally advocates the idea of writing as
one of the strategic mediums for social activists to fight and achieve their noble
objectives.
Furthermore, he has been awarded with numerous local as well as
international awards for his contributions and services to society, especially the
workers. In recognition of his tireless and continuous efforts at promoting social
unity and integration as well health and social welfare, he has been conferred
Pingat Darjah Kebesaran Johan Mangku Negara (J.M.N), Pingat Darjah Kebesaran
Darjah Dato Paduka Mahkota Perak (D.P.M.P), Pingat Darjah Kebesaran Panglima
Setia Mahkota (P.S.M), Pingat Darjah Kebesaran Darjah Dato Paduka Mahkota
Selangor (D.P.M.S), Pingat Darjah Kebesaran Seri Mahkota Wilayah (S.M.W) and
Pingat Darjah Kebesaran Seri Panglima Darjah Kinabalu (S.P.D.K). Above all, he has
also received an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Law) degree from Universiti Sains
Malaysia and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters degree from the Universiti Malaysia
Sarawak. And in 2012, he is conferred an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Social
Work) degree from Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
