The test that could change your life

Improving your hearing health involves three important steps:

1 Undergoing a hearing evaluation once a year.

2 Selecting a Hearing Healthcare Professional who understands your needs.

3 Using the expertise of your Hearing Healthcare Professional to select the right hearing device and solutions that best suit your needs.

Ask yourself these questions.

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of them, you could benefit from an evaluation.

• Do you often ask others to repeat themselves?

• Have people ever told you that you listen to the TV or radio too loud?

• Do you hear some people more clearly than others?

• Is it difficult for you to hear in a crowded restaurant, a large group situation, or when there is background noise?

• Have you been told that you speak too loudly?

• Do you hear a conversation, but have difficulty understanding the words?

• Are you withdrawing more from contact with friends and family?

• Do you find telephone conversations increasingly straining?

• Do you have trouble hearing normal household sounds, such as a dripping faucet or doorbell ringing?

Hearing loss FAQs

Learning more about your hearing can put you in a better position to protect it. Here are some answers to some commonly asked questions:

What causes hearing loss?Hearing loss may be caused by hereditary factors, disease or illness, medications, natural aging, or obstruction or damage at one or more locations within the ear.

Is all hearing loss the same? No, there are three main types of hearing loss: sensorineural, conductive, and mixed. Sensorineural hearing loss results from problems in the inner ear, in the nerve from the inner ear to the brain, or in the brain. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound is blocked from getting through to the inner ear. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of the two.

How can hearing loss be treated?Although sensorineural hearing loss can’t be ‘cured,’ properly selected and fitted hearing instruments can help you to hear speech and other sounds you have been missing. Certain types of hearing loss, particularly conductive losses, can be corrected through medical and/or surgical means.

How do I know which type of hearing loss I have?Visiting a Hearing Healthcare Professional for a comprehensive hearing evaluation is the only way to determine which type you have, and which treatment method will best suit your needs.

Here are some examples of the types of hearing aids available:

Custom products are made from an ‘impression’ of the wearer’s ear so that they fit perfectly. They can range in size from the very smallest devices, called ‘completely-in-the-canal’ devices (CICs) that make them virtually invisible, to the largest custom size, called ‘in-the-ear’ (ITE) model, that offers the right combination of appearance, ease of use and affordability to meet a variety of hearing losses.

The most flexible hearing model, BTE instruments are manufactured to meet exact specifications and are designed to fit a full range of hearing losses, from mild to profound.

The newest model available, the RIC product offers the flexibility of the BTE instrument with the virtual invisibility of the CIC because of its miniaturized tubing and earmold/insert.
