The Business Case is one of the building blocks of LaPS; it is an idea, proposed
by a company, and further shaped during discussions with Politecnico's
researchers, which is developed by a group of top students across a six-month
period.
What is the Business Case? Drawing on the experience of Alta Scuola
Politecnica, the Business Case can be:
– The conceptualization of a new product
– The definition and assessment of a new service
– The analysis and assessment of alternative solutions for a company problem
(e.g. quality, environmental sustainability, technology)
Who are the group members? Each case is assigned to a group of 4-6
students coming from different disciplines: Environmental Engineering,
Computing Systems Engineering, and Management Engineering. Groups are
not only interdisciplinary but also international, putting together students from
different countries. This provides an additional benefit to companies, especially
when their interest goes beyond national boundaries.
Who is guiding the groups? Each group is assigned a Politecnico's tutor, who
is a PhD student or a Research Fellow. The tutor is crucial in guiding the group,
but also for maintaining a continuous interaction with the company. This
mediation allows also to tailor the relationship between companies and
students upon the project and emergent needs.
Furthermore a board of professors has been established, which is a reference
for the tutors, and a further support for students and companies.
Which organizations can apply?
Any type of organization can apply for submitting a business case. The criteria
used to selected organizations, and business cases, are: the innovativeness of
the idea; the willingness of managers to challenge themselves in discussing the
case; the possibility to deploy students cross-disciplinary background.
BUSINESS CASE
The integration between universities and companies, the alignment between
higher education training and external needs, have been a challenge for long
and central issues for Politecnico di Milano.
Lake Poli School (LaPS) was born in this context, providing and additional
arena of interaction and confrontation between students, companies, teachers
and researchers on issues which have emerged relevant in the last years.
LaPS is also aimed at nearing different fields of Politecnico, joining students
coming from different disciplinary courses: Environmental Engineering,
Computing Systems Engineering, and Management Engineering.
LaPS develops between October and March, across three main activities:
- Development of a business case in which a selected group of international
students work with companies, guided by Politecnico's research fellows.
- Seminars on 'hot' issues as Creativity and Innovation, Networks, Ethics and
Social Responsibility.
- A final workshop to award the best group and the most entrepreneurial work.

Imagine a bank: a fundamental part of its business is to lend money. Each bank might know that its activity is definitely a risky activity: there is no total guarantee that it will get all its money back. An extreme case could be the default of its counterpart, that leads to losses in the portfolio. These are situations in which credit risk manifests itself. As the recent financial crisis has shown us, a correct understanding of these concerns and the ability to cope with them are very important in the world of today.
In this scenario, the purpose of the Project is to forecast potential customer insolvency considering its correlation with macroeconomic conditions of territory. In particular the analysis is carried out for three different provinces of Lombardy : Varese, Como, Lecco and related municipalities. The team can reach the goal by creating a regression model through which Open Data, Web Sources and the Reply dataset information are elaborated.
Given the initial dataset, containing information about historical payments and missing payments for a set of customers of an Electric Utilities Company, the team is able to combine it with indexes extracted from Open Data sources to build a predictive model. In the utilization case, the input are predicted indexes, estimated manually by expert analysts (Reply's ''Oracles'') that make the prediction on the basis of their experience and public news. The output will be the prediction of the expected loss for each area in future months. In order to communicate information clearly, a geospatial data analysis is carried out and supported by data visualization tools.Companies might benefit from the acquisition of this model that would make them able to identify suitable and reliable clients for future profitability. Even though the future seems far away, it is actually beginning right now. And looking backward through Open Data is a good way for getting close to it.

Always close to young people, in 1997 AsLiCo created a great project: Opera domani.Born almost twenty years ago, the project aims to introduce students to Opera.
Opera domani is not the only expression of love for young people by AsLiCo, but, over the years, were born Opera Kids, dedicated to kindergardens, Opera It dedicated to high schools, Opera Baby which will debut in 2015 for children from 0 to 36 months and Orchestra in Gioco, a course dedicated entirely to symphonic music: in 2011 the projects were combined into a single platform for music education called Opera education.
LAKE POLI SCHOOL AND ASLICOLake Poli School by Politecnico of Milano and AsLiCo join together with the aim to enhance even more Opera Education, to study and realize a unique product of edutainment: this brings Opera not only in schools, but also in families of the thousands of students involved in the project.

The offering of Claind (Gas generators) reaches customers in more than thirty countries around the world. Gas generators represent a valuable alternative to traditional sources of supply, such as compressed and liquid gas cylinders. Thanks to the generators, in fact, it is possible to produce all the required gas directly on-site, avoiding the typical drawbacks related to conventional supply methods and without any loss of efficiency. The most important benefits deriving from the use of gas generators include in fact cost reduction, independence from external suppliers, safety, comfort and lower environmental impact.
The strategy adapted by Claind has always been based on the continuous search for innovation, in order to maintain its market position and obtain better performances than the competitors. LAPS project is part of this strategy and aims to develop new products or services, exploiting the new communication and information technologies.
In particular, the team of students has to come up with innovative ideas enabling the company to cover a broader range of customer needs and increase business opportunities. The first step consists in the analysis of the business model of Claind, focusing the attention on external configuration. Starting from the value proposition (in terms of products and services delivered), the students have to identify the target market, the market strategy and the channel used to deliver the offering. The second step includes the assessment of the innovative technologies that might be integrated in the existing offering, improving the market share of Claind. After having defined the main scenarios, the third step aims to evaluate the most relevant impacts on the business model related to the introduction of the new technology. Finally, last step wants to translate these impacts into revenues and costs, in order to appraise the profitability of the introduction of the new technology.

Filo d'oro is a consortium of companies in the Como area. Companies in the consortium operate in the textile industry, covering the entire value chain from the initial yarn to the finished product. Tintoria Filati Portichetto, Ambrogio Pessina and Comofil are focused on the textile ennobling. Tessitura Taborelli is a leading company in the production of jacquard and plain fabrics, both raw yarn and dyed yarn, while Clerici Tessuto (with its associates Sara Ink and Mgm) covers the entire finishing cycle of silk and other natural fibres producing men's and women's clothing, accessories and home furnishing for the luxury sector.
The project's goal is to boost the external communication related to the environmental sustainability of production processes and products, with reference to both individual companies and the consortium as a whole. The output of the project is the creation of a structured reporting system and related website that comprises data on the most relevant environmental performance of the whole group.
The realization of the report and website has followed these steps:
Ÿ Identification of the relevant environmental sustainability dimensions. - definition of the most appropriate format for sustainability reporting; - identification of the relevant sustainability dimensions (ie waste water, emissions, etc...);- selection of indicators and metrics per each of them, based on available standards found in literature or ad hoc defined for the consortium.
Ÿ Data collection and calculation of indicators : - data collection from companies within the consortium; - calculation of the indicators; - practical filling of the reporting.
Ÿ Communication development: - website mock-up, for the part related to environmental communication; - definition of website requirements ; - report development.
These activities have been developed starting from site visits in all the companies in the consortium, ad hoc meetings with energy and environmental consultants of companies and discussions and meetings with each company representative.

Overlooking the West coast of Lake Como in the Northernmost part of Italy, Via Regina is one of the oldest roads of historical and cultural exchange between this region and Switzerland. Nice walking routes, along the most well-known Via Francisca and Via Spluga, represent a fundamental "system" of transalpine soft mobility which has not yet developed all its touristic potential.
Thanks to the synergy of cultural experts, government entities, landscape designers, photographers, architects and engineers, the project aims to provide local communities with tools to rediscover the culture of the area combining historical tradition and technological innovation.
The first phase of this project seeks to create a Slow Tourism Model within the municipality of Cernobbio (Italy) and the area of Breggia and Valle di Muggio (Switzerland) that could be replicated all along Via Regina. This kind of tourism is based on the pillar of sustainability; therefore it needs to promote activities that are environmentally friendly and with a strong content of culture and local heritage. Topics as soft mobility, local gastronomy, simple accommodation and relaxing atmosphere must be discussed and put in practice.
To accomplish the above goals the following milestones were established and reached by the group:
- Development of an interactive WebGIS (both for desktop and mobile visualization) that merge touristic, cultural and geographic data.- Creation of a Web page that works both as a presentation and as a platform for Via Regina project. Within this page all kinds of touristic information will be shared as well as technological tools like the WebGIS to foster the community participation.- Market analysis and future trends expectations regarding the local communities and the impact of the slow tourism model.- Promotional plan with strong leverage on social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest).

The rapid growth of the smartphone market in the recent years has fundamentally changed the way in which people access and consume content. The goal of the project is to develop a smartphone application, SmARTravel, that can be used as a multimedia interactive guide in museums and cultural heritage points. This way, visitors can use their smartphones as pocket guides for all points of interest in different cities and countries using only one application, replacing the traditional audio guides. This can be achieved by simple download of the appropriate content written by experts, enabled by the application. Moreover, the application enriches the learning experience of visitors by providing textual, video and audio content for the points of interest, in a language of their preference. To achieve this goal, the SmARTravel team performed the following activities:- Analysis of competitors considering other smartphone applications and traditional content providers, in terms of their characteristics and business strategies.- Market analysis to identify potential customers with focus on museums, municipalities and private foundations managing cultural heritage points in Italy. This also included preparation of a questionnaire and performing interviews with the customers to better understand their interests and needs and tailor the application with respect to them.- Analysis of existing technologies and choice of most suitable ones for development of the application.- Implementation of a prototype that includes development of a smartphone application for the major mobile operating systems, that represents the actual guide for the visitor. The application allows to use the content online, or download it offline and use it on-site.- Development of a back-end application that provides management of the web content by the customers themselves, available to the visitors through the smartphone application.

“It is the quality of our people, and their
capacity to deliver fitting solutions, with you
and for you, that drive real business results.”
In this project with Capgemini, the team worked on a selected business case in the field of second screen application applied to football matches.
ogether with social interaction permits the viewer to feel directly engaged with his/her favourite team, by having a wide range of up-to-the-minute match statistics and data from wearable, as well as real time images of what the player is seeing and the possibility of sharing their ideas and comments. Summary of the main points/App features:- SYNCHRONIZING WITH THE MATCH: automatically connect with the match using the revolutionary audio watermark technology;- PERCEIVING THE MATCH through our innovative algorithm: the app summarizes all the data gathered from wearable sensors (i.e. heartbeat, sweat level, km run, GPS position, etc.) in order to let the customer share the experience of their sport stars- ENGAGING IN THE MATCH: clients will actively participate in twitter comments and polls.- KNOWING THE MATCH: real time stats and bio information of all the players The team analyzed the main technologies, partners, and possibilities in the second screen app market, focusing on automatic synchronization and wearable sensors, something never seen before in Italy. In order to understand the feasibility, analysis study was conducted to evaluate the major variables, market characteristics, and customer behaviours that are relevant with a particular focus on the Italian market. After gathering sufficient knowledge in these fields, a solution was proposed. The goal of the project is to develop a sustainable business model for this emerging market: balance the value streams between key partners and clients with the end user as the main objective. From the practical side, a mobile application (mock-up and prototype) that enables users to try this new experience has been developed. “The best way to predict the future is to wear it” brought to you by CapGemini LAPS team.
A second screen refers to the use of a computing device (commonly a mobile device, such as a tablet or smartphone) to provide an enhanced viewing experience for content on another device, such as a television. More specifically, the goal was to create a high-level experience for customers of tomorrow by making them feel the match through real-time wearable sensor data. The integration with this kind of sensors t

OVERVIEW
Leading creative people. How do you do it?
Jean-François Coget is an Associate
Professor of Management at the Orfalea
College of Business at California Polytechnic
State University, in San Luis Obispo,
California, where he specializes in
Organizational Behavior. He earned his Ph.D.
from the Anderson School of management at
UCLA, and was previously a faculty member
at HEC Paris. He is currently a visiting
professor at Politecnico di Milano, in the
department of management engineering.
Jean-François Coget's research interests
include emotions, intuition, decision-making,
creativity, and leadership. He has published
numerous peer-reviewed articles, book
chapters, and given numerous conference
talks on these topics. He is also co-author of a
textbook on Organizational Behavior.
Prior to joining academia, Jean-Francois
Coget worked on the trading floor of Morgan
Stanley in Paris, as an Assistant Auditor at
Ernst and Young in Guinea Conakry, and
served as the Naval Assistant of the Defense
Attaché at the French Embassy in Portugal.
How do you lead creative people? Movie
directors, orchestra conductors, fashion
designers, conceptual artists, chefs have to
grapple with this question. But so do CEOs of
high-tech companies, like Apple and Google,
managers of R&D and engineering teams, or
any manager who has to orchestrate the work of
people collaborating on creative ventures.
Innovation and creativity give organizations a
durable strategic advantage in today's
increasingly competitive, globalized world.
So how do you lead creative people? As it turns
out, there are two possible models: Google's
and Apple's models. The Google model
revolves around creating an open and tolerant
culture, where creative individuals are
encouraged and coddled. We label this the
“mothering model of leadership and creativity.”
This is the model most often advocated in the
academic literature on creativity.
Yet, a number of iconic leaders of creative
ventures, such as Steve Jobs at Apple or chef
Ferran Adria at El Bulli, lead their creative teams
very differently. They do not give them freedom
and positive evaluations. They are difficult,
irascible, moody, critical, demanding, and
inconsistent. Their collaborators often comment
on how difficult it is to work with them. They fit the
description of the lone genius, whose
intelligence is commensurate with their capacity
for annoyance.
This talk will explore and develop the “lone-
genius model of leadership and creativity,”
using, for illustration, Steve Jobs at Apple, chef
Ferran Adria at El Bulli, and other examples
across industries. The two models will then be
compared and contrasted with respect to their
advantages and drawbacks.

SPIN (Sport Insieme) is one of the project launched within the Laboratory. Its aim is to improve the diffusion of sport in Italy, through the creation or restructuring of sporting facilities managed by social enterprises. In order to avoid the request of personal or real guarantees for credit provision, the bank has created a Consortium joining seven sport promotion bodies recognized by C.O.N.I.. These organizations have the role to provide a qualitative evaluation of social enterprises' business plans, based on their experience in the sport field. ISP Laboratory is responsible of the financial evaluation of business plans. Banca Prossima, the bank of the group that deals with the third sector and social enterprises, finally grants the credit line. Within this framework, the goal of this project is to improve the process of evaluation of the business plans related to the sport infrastructures in order to facilitate SPIN diffusion around Italy. One of the most important aspects of the evaluation is thorough territorial analysis.

BEST 4 BEST is the name of the project associated with the “BestTie” company, a leading firm in the production of ties interlinings. The company usually receives new orders as fabric samples representing the tie's design needed by the customer or by referring to existing models.
The task given to the group was to find an IT solution for optimizing the first step in the interlining production, just after an order has been received. In this phase, there is the need of matching the design provided by the customer with the existing ones collected in the BestTie's archive thus reducing the drawing and startup efforts in the production. This step is currently done by eye control, comparing the sample model provided by the customer with the ones created by the company. Dealing with different fabrics, possible distortions or imperfections means that Best Tie cannot rely on using scanners or any other similar methods for an automatic matching, otherwise the results could be inaccurate.
The project was born as an ASF's initiative derived from the need of raising the environmental awareness of young citizens, in particular the students of Primary School. The critical levels of pollution afflicting the Como area, and the understanding that acting on a younger citizen can bring better results in the future were the determining factors of this initiative. The objectives of the company were to show how an increased use of public transportation would lead to a reduction of CO2 emission as well as a decrease in traffic congestion, to improve the perceived image of ASF among the citizens and to promote the use of public transportation among teenagers.

After preliminary investigation and considering the target of the project, our group decided to tackle it by using a Gamification approach.
The project objectives have thus been defined as:- The implementation of an entertainment experience used to increase the understanding of environmental problems through different educational games and a digital encyclopedia collecting the most meaningful facts related to pollution and transportation.- The Implementation of a behavioral system able to track the actions and the preferences of the players within the game in order to measure the improvements that the educational experience has provided.- The definition of competitions among the students of different classes of the same school and among different schools in Como to obtain prizes, like educational trips. By collecting points within the game and in real life activities, the students are encouraged to change their actions in order to achieve the most “eco-friendly” behavior.- The definition of long term business and marketing strategies able to improve the public perception of the company and to make use of the data gathered and analyzed by this initiative in an effective way.
