MAIN TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Iberdrola Engineering is working on meticulously surveying the Qatari grid in order to analyze the feasibility
of deploying a Smart Grid in Qatar. Results of this survey have been the following:
• Technical feasibility study for Smart Grid deployment.
• Pilot project design that includes: Smart Metering (Electricity and Water), Distributed Energy
Resources (DER) Integration, Distribution Automation and MV monitoring.
• Cost-benefit analysis: using EPRI’s (Electric Power Research Institute) methodology Iberdrola
Engineering has been able to calculate benefits of the Smart Grid deployment in Kahramaa’s
network. This quantification includes economic, reliability, environment and security benefits.

network.• Telecommunications integrator: Allows direct calls between the two networks voice , UHF and
Telephony, in addition to the joint operation of these from the 4 operator stations.• Sistema de telemetering for MV customers: 200 modems GSM and 200 modems by conventional
telephone line.

� Automation of hydroelectric plants over 10MW (and some minor with special features). The number of
plants involved in the project were 58, in 4 basins. It included 141 groups, with a rated capacity of 7,956
MW , representing 97% of the hydroelectric power Iberdrola. The aim of the project was the operation and
supervision of the central from a remote operation center, which made necessary the replacement of
control systems, voltage regulators and turbine governors, protection, auxiliary services, etc.
