Environment-friendly Sitingand Site Master Planning of New Industrial Parksa training program 10 - 12 June 2014at Unity Pavilion, Auroville (near Puducherry)

BackgroundLarge scale industrial development is becoming inevitable for India. If not properly planned industrial parks pose tremendous risks on natural resources, environment and humans alike. There is a need for preparation of environment-friendly Development or Site Master Plans for the industrial parks and the manufactur-ing zones that are holistic in its approach and includes clean technology solutions and processes in the planning stage itself.

The aim of this training program is to introduce green planning and design processes in order to foster and encourage a more sustainable industrial development in India. The training pro-gram will explore issues such as:

• How can we adapt sustainably integrated planning processes?• How can we provide common infrastructure?• What are the benefits of green rating systems?• How can we provide green infrastructure in new industrial parks?

ObjectiveTo provide awareness and knowledge on concepts, approaches, standards etc. for integrating sustainability aspects into prepara-tion of environment friendly site master plans for industrial areas so as to facilitate decision making in proper planning of indus-trial areas and in developing relevant policy instruments.

Methodology The training objective would be achieved through workshop sessions, lectures and elaborations regarding various aspects of master planning of the industrial areas; also supplemented with interactive field visits and hands-on exercises.

Focus Areas• Master planning principles • Standards, Rating systems - technical quality, environmental quality, economic quality, socio- cultural & functional quality etc., ”Greening” of industrial areas•Technical Aspects:

- Transportation/circulation systems, Landscaping, renewable energy systems planning- Water, waste water, waste management- Common infrastructure and services - Organizational and management models

• Case Examples – national, international

ParticipantsParticipation is on invitation only. Participant typically will be a delegate from industrial park developers, relevant government department and regulatory bodies. The training program has limited capacity of 25 participants.

Thomas KraubitzSenior Consultant, Happold Consulting Thomas Kraubitz is a strategic planner, urbanist and architect with strong experience in regional and city planning, international development, urban and building design. As Senior Consultant with Buro Happold Cities in Berlin he is leading multidisciplinary city-regional planning projects worldwide requiring comprehensive analyses, a strategic framework and decisional processes for successful design development and implementation. Thomas has worked in different climatic zones in Consulting, Project Management, Urban Planning, Urban Design and Architecture for Stefan Behnisch, Ken Yeang and Rem Koolhaas amongst others. As an urban expert and former Fulbright Scholar he lectures at various national and international universities. He has been actively involved initiating the German Green Building Council and is leading the economics section for the Industrial Districts Scheme. Thomas studied architecture at the University of Coburg and Urban Planning at Tongji University Shanghai, the MIT and Harvard and holds a Master’s Degree in Urban Design with Distinction from Harvard University. He is a LEED GA and DGNB Auditor. He has joined the Berlin of-fice in 2010, where he is a project leader.

Suhasini Aiyer GuiganPrincipal Consultant, Auroville Desing ConsultingSuhasini Ayer – Guigan, is a graduate of “Delhi School of Planning and Architecture”; living in Au-roville since 1985 and one of the co-founder of the “Auroville Centre for Scientific Research”; an organisation dedicated to research and experimentation in the field of appropriate building materi-als and technologies, water management, renewable energy and solar passive / climatic architec-ture and sustainable urban planning. The head the “Auroville Design Consultants”, the Planning and Design wing of this organization, have designed and implemented over 50+ projects in India in the last 25+ years. She was co-recipient of the Hassan Fathy Award for ‘Architecture for the Poor’ in 1992, co- nominated for the Aga khan in 1992 and recipient of the Design Share Award for educa-tional buildings in 2003 and 2005.

Tency Baeten Co-Founder, Auroville Center for Scientific Research Chief Executive, Centre for Scientific Research, Auroville, whose continuing effort over years has been to design and develop the dynamics of the human habitat with an integral approach to sus-tainable practices particularly in the field of waste water recycling and sanitation.

Toine van Megen Co-Founder, Auroville ConsultingMr. Toine van Megen is the co-founder of Auroville Consulting, a unit of Auroville that provides mul-tidisciplinary expertise to project developers, manufacturers, policy makers and corporate leader-ship teams in areas of sustainable development, renewable energy, organic farming and transform-ative business management. Mr. Toine is also a key contributor for the planning and development of the Auroville International Township in various capacities. Prior to starting Auroville Consulting, Mr. Toine served as Vice President at Suzlon Energy Limited. He was also a member of the Supervi-sory Board of Suzlon Energy A/s , Denmark from where the international business of Suzlon is man-aged.

Paul BlanchflowerDirector, Auroville Botanical ServicesPaul has over twenty years of experience in forestry and landscaping. He arrived in Auroville in 1991 from Scotland after graduating in Forestry and Ecology at Edinburgh University. He founded the Auroville Botanical Gardens in 2000 that offers a variety of services for land management and landscaping. He is currently engaged in developing the gardens with emphasis on environmental education for the local school children. His recent projects include a resort landscape for Mahindra Hoildays, anda landscape for the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chennai in addition to other projects in Kashmir, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

Vikram DevathaPrincipal Consultant, Auroville ConsutlingVikram Devatha has over 17 years of experience in business management, as well as in managing the administration, accounts and finance for a multinational corporation based in India. He is cur-rently engaged in project management and renewable energy research studies in Auroville. He has a bachelors degree in International Business and Economics from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia.

RegistrationThe participation in the training program is free of charge, including of lunch, dinner, materials and facilitation for all activities. Accommodation costs and travel costs to and from Auroville are not included in the offer. All meals are vegetarian. Alcohol is not permitted in Auroville guest houses.

Invited organizations are requested to nominate delegates in writing be-fore 5th June 2014. Registration will be closed once the limited capacity of 25 participants is filled. If a facilitator is unavailable, then we will substitute the relevant activity with a similar one.
