Challenges and Resolutions

Page 2: Envisioning a Library for the Phoenix Biomedical Campus Challenges and Resolutions

Challenge Issue Areas• From the User POV:

– Identifying and finding resources– Accessing (electronically) and physical use of

resources

• From Admin POV;– Staffing and administering the library– Funding the Library

Page 3: Envisioning a Library for the Phoenix Biomedical Campus Challenges and Resolutions

Accessing and Using Resources• Now

– Distinct and separate user groups and therefore 3 systems (physical and electronic) of access

• Ideal– Create single sign on for all state university user

groups– PBCL Card access to all PBC card holders?

• Possible Solutions

Page 4: Envisioning a Library for the Phoenix Biomedical Campus Challenges and Resolutions

Locating Resources• Now

– Must search 3 online catalogs: UA, ASU, NAU

• Ideal– Create one place to search and locate

• Could use WorldCat Local? (least expensive?)

• Possible Solutions

Staffing the Library• Now

– 3 personnel groups: UA, ASU, NAU

• Ideal– One for PBC

• Possible Solutions

Funding and sourcing the Library• Now

– 3 funding entities: UA, ASU, NAU• Presently only UA is funding the PBC Library; used primarily in

person by UA students, less so ASU BMI and nursing students and faculty.

– 3 library resourcing (aka collections acquisitions and development) groups: UA, ASU, NAU

• Presently collections are identified and acquired by UA AHSL library faculty; DPC ASU has acquired several core UA COM texts.

• Ideal– One for PBC

• Possible Solutions

Goal?• Full integration?

• Cost sharing? Distributed?

Summary: Comparison of Distributed & Integrated Model for PBC Library ServicesNOTE: This is a detailed estimate, not detailed operational budget

Integrated (I) Distributed (D) D - I (=savings)
