Whew What a month As is always
the case May was the busiest month
of the year for the San Diego
Epiphyllum Society and for good reason It is the
height of our blooming season when all of the
work wersquove done over the last year comes to
fruition with the fantastic reward of stunning
flowers
It was one event after another beginning the first
weekend in May when the Safari Park Sale the
Cuyamaca College Sale and the South Bay
Epiphyllum Society Show and Sale in Palos
Verdes were all scheduled The second weekend
in May was devoted of course to our very own
Motherrsquos Day Show and Sale in Balboa Park
followed the very next weekend by EpiCon
hosted by the Epiphyllum Society of America in
Altadena and the ESA Show and Sale the next
day in Arcadia at the LA Arboretum Finally on
the fourth Saturday in May came our annual
Garden Caravan where we traveled all over San
Diego County visiting the homes and gardens of
SDES members Janice Wakefield in El Cajon
Adele Wagner in La Mesa Chuck Everson and
Jerry Williamsrsquo Rainbow Gardens in Vista and
Matt Cheneyrsquos in Rainbow where we finished up
with a delicious feast Thanks to all of them for
hosting this fun event
And thanks to everyone who participated in all of
the events of May Without all of your collective
efforts we couldnrsquot put on activities like this in a
successful way Your work assures the SDES can
continue to grow and function for another fiscal
year Special thanks to our 2nd Vice President and
Show Chairperson Sandra Chapin for organizing
yet another successful Motherrsquos Day Show to
Beth Jackson for coordinating the Show judging
and to all those who judged to our 1st Vice
President and Program Coordinator Velma Crain
and Marj Myers for putting together the Motherrsquos
Day Potluck to our Recording Secretary and
Sales Events Coordinator Cindy Decker for
managing all of the sales events especially the
sale on Motherrsquos Day weekend to our Safari Park
Coordinator Jerry Moreau for his work at the
Park and to Mildred Mikas who made sure the
Caravan was a success once again this year
Again we had many out-of-town and out-of-the-
country visitors to our Motherrsquos Day Show
which pleases me to no end Thanks to all of you
folks for coming so far to see us
The blooming season was a little strange this year
due to the fact we really didnrsquot have a winter and
to the almost unbelievable heat wersquove already had
in May After some high anxiety about whether or
not we would have enough flowers to put on a
Show everyone came through with I suspect
every flower they had so we had plenty Thanks
for that
As your flowering season winds down remember
that the SDES is as much about its membership as
it is about the epies Thanks SO much to all of
you

Another great show is in the books thanks to
everyone who pitched in and helped wherever
needed The room was ablaze with flowers in
spite of the early blooming season this
year Everyone brought flowers to display or
to share and there was plenty A big thank
you to all who helped set up in 101 and in the
courtyard The set up on Sunday morn-
ing was very efficient and judging was started
and went so smoothly that the show opened
early Many thanks go to Beth Jackson and
her clerking staff and to all the judges for their
work Looking around the room we had hats
of all descriptions There were fancy tea hats
pith helmets Indian head dresses Mexican
sombreros cowboy hats newspaper hats
and more One of the highlights was the table
full of seedlings Another table had to be
added to stage them all We have lots of new
hybrids to look forward to when they are
registered It was really special to see the first
time exhibitors preparing their tables We had
six new exhibitors with great displays I cant
wait to see what they will do in the future It
was great fun to see members and guests from
Australia Sweden Chicago San Francisco
Denver and the LA area Marge Myers and
Velma pulled together a great lunch Again I
say Hats Off to us
From our Sales Chair Cindy
Decker
I want to extend my personal
thanks to all the people who
showed up ready to help for
the Mothers Day
Event They do what they
can to make the event an
extra special one for
SDES They load plants and
drive them down to the park they unload the
cars they assemble the BIG awning they take
down the BIG awning They stand on their
feet and give help and advice to all the people
and they work at the cash registers MY
SPECIAL THANKS TO CRAIG JACKSON
Who sees to it that the awning goes up
quickly and easily with the help of many
hands Without his leadership the building of
the shade for the plants on Sunday would not
be done so well Thanks again
Craig Without all these helpers SDES would
not have had the success it did Thanks to all
of you from me A special thanks to those of
you who donated cuttings of any quantity
small or large We would not have a sale
without cuttings and plants to sell
June 2014 SDES Epi News Page 4
In May we had our Annual Sale at the Safari
Park Although it was not as lucrative as last
year it raised a good amount that allows us to
maintain the epi collection here Overall the sale
was good we had lots of fun and we spread the
word about epis
I am always so impressed by the wonderful and
dedicated volunteers we have who come out and
make a difference at the Park SDES has much
to be proud of All the work we do at the Park
makes a tremendous difference and creates more
beauty in the world In June we will be hanging
more pipe in the workhouse to better organize
the plants We will also be designing a new
entrance into the display house Someone
discovered a grant opportunity through the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and
passed the information on to Cary Sharp (head
horticulturist at the Park) Hopefully with both
SDES and the Safari Park working together on
the application we will be awarded the grant
Then we can move ahead with the makeover of
the display
Helping out at the Annual Sale on May 3-4 were
Ron Ashman Jean Bonner Sandra Chapin Ron
amp Velma Crain Cindy Decker Marie Dempe-
wolf Bill Greene Bob Holzinger Beth Jackson
Chuck Largin Rachel Lininger Gerry amp Mil-
dred Mikas and Jerry Moreau Thank you all
Your help is greatly appreciated
The next work parties will be June 14th amp 28th
Your help is always needed The more volun-
teers we have at the Park the better for the epies
and the display There is much to do so
whether you can do a lot or a little everyone is
welcome and all work is appreciated If you
canrsquot volunteer how about making a donation of
some sort Money is always helpful but help
could also take the form of doing research and
grant writing or donating equipment and sup-
plies
If you are interested in joining the fun and
learning a lot about epis in the process come
and volunteer at the Park Information on how
to sign up can be found on the website can be

Just before the printing deadline for this edition of the Epi News we received word that
long-time San Diego Epiphyllum Society member Jean Costanzo passed away on May
16th Jean contributed generously of her time to the SDES for many years and last year
donated her huge collection of epies to the Safari Park We will include a more fitting
tribute to Jean in the July edition of the Epi News

It was a cool clear day in San
Diego for our Photo Caravan
After the heat and fires of the last
few weeks it was perfect weather
to see how other members grow
and display their Epis Visiting othersrsquo gardens
give us ideas how to improve our shadelathe
houses where to hang the epis and to garner
more ideas on taking care of Epis
Our first stop of the early morning was at our
Treasurer Janice Wakefieldrsquos home Sur-
priseJanice has a huge back yard She is still
building her lathe house (which looks great) and
the epis have individual emitters going to each
plant There are many more epies to the right
side of the back yard where there is a large
overhang Looking straight to the back of her
yard Janice even has rows of corn 4 feet high
Many small succulents in 3rdquo pots set into two
layers of three-cornered pots Janice just put in a
new blacktop driveway and is also putting in a
large brick-like stone area from the house out to
the shed The remainder of her property goes
down a slope Now I understand why Janice is
always so busy
Our second garden was at Adele Wagnerrsquos
house Adele has a lovely yard with a pool in the
center and Epis all around under the covered
shade cloth patio She even has some on the side
of her home and behind the pool Adele and her
husband have many really large pots of epis and
other succulents in her yard all of which are very
healthy There were even some epi blooms for us
to photograph and to add to our wish list On the
back wall of her home she has nice little plaques
and lots of hanging baskets Adele has every
right to be proud of her garden of Epis
Our next two stops were Epi Nurseries Rainbow
Gardens (Jerry Williams) in Vista and Mattsrsquo
Landscape (Matt Cheney) in Rainbow where
we had a wonderful BBQ Many of our newer
members didnrsquot know about these Nurseries
Everyone bought at least one or two potted plants
or some cuttings at each nursery using our
ldquo$500 off couponsrdquo I even purchased three 4rsquorsquo
potted plants and three cuttings of epi hybrids
from my Wish List
Thank you to our hosts for allowing us to visit
their lovely Gardens and Nurseries this year

Enjoy the blooming season
Check your blooms against the description in
the ESA Directory Mark plants as UNK if they
do not match (Or mark the particular stem that
bloomed with the date and color of bloomhellip just
in case just one of the cuttings in the pot was
mismarked)
Remove wilted blooms by cutting about 34 inch
from stemndash unless you want the fruit and the
seeds Use a sharp knife or pruning shears for
cutting
Prune plants to shape after flowering by taking
cuttings
Renew snailslug barrier and watch for pests
Take care in watering The plants should never
be allowed to dry out OR become soggy
Reward your plants after blooming with a
balanced food (10-10-10)
Protect new growth and long stems from wind
damage
Now is the Time

Protect new growth and long stems from wind
damage

--By Sandra Chapin Show Chair
Another great show is in the books thanks to
everyone who pitched in and helped wherever
needed The room was ablaze with flowers in
spite of the early blooming season this
year Everyone brought flowers to display or
to share and there was plenty A big thank
you to all who helped set up in 101 and in the
courtyard The set up on Sunday morn-
ing was very efficient and judging was started
and went so smoothly that the show opened
early Many thanks go to Beth Jackson and
her clerking staff and to all the judges for their
work Looking around the room we had hats
of all descriptions There were fancy tea hats
pith helmets Indian head dresses Mexican
sombreros cowboy hats newspaper hats
and more One of the highlights was the table
full of seedlings Another table had to be
added to stage them all We have lots of new
hybrids to look forward to when they are
registered It was really special to see the first
time exhibitors preparing their tables We had
six new exhibitors with great displays I cant
wait to see what they will do in the future It
was great fun to see members and guests from
Australia Sweden Chicago San Francisco
Denver and the LA area Marge Myers and
Velma pulled together a great lunch Again I
say Hats Off to us
From our Sales Chair Cindy
Decker
I want to extend my personal
thanks to all the people who
showed up ready to help for
the Mothers Day
Event They do what they
can to make the event an
extra special one for
SDES They load plants and
drive them down to the park they unload the
cars they assemble the BIG awning they take
down the BIG awning They stand on their
feet and give help and advice to all the people
and they work at the cash registers MY
SPECIAL THANKS TO CRAIG JACKSON
Who sees to it that the awning goes up
quickly and easily with the help of many
hands Without his leadership the building of
the shade for the plants on Sunday would not
be done so well Thanks again
Craig Without all these helpers SDES would
not have had the success it did Thanks to all
of you from me A special thanks to those of
you who donated cuttings of any quantity
small or large We would not have a sale
without cuttings and plants to sell
June 2014 SDES Epi News Page 4
In May we had our Annual Sale at the Safari
Park Although it was not as lucrative as last
year it raised a good amount that allows us to
maintain the epi collection here Overall the sale
was good we had lots of fun and we spread the
word about epis
I am always so impressed by the wonderful and
dedicated volunteers we have who come out and
make a difference at the Park SDES has much
to be proud of All the work we do at the Park
makes a tremendous difference and creates more
beauty in the world In June we will be hanging
more pipe in the workhouse to better organize
the plants We will also be designing a new
entrance into the display house Someone
discovered a grant opportunity through the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and
passed the information on to Cary Sharp (head
horticulturist at the Park) Hopefully with both
SDES and the Safari Park working together on
the application we will be awarded the grant
Then we can move ahead with the makeover of
the display
Helping out at the Annual Sale on May 3-4 were
Ron Ashman Jean Bonner Sandra Chapin Ron
amp Velma Crain Cindy Decker Marie Dempe-
wolf Bill Greene Bob Holzinger Beth Jackson
Chuck Largin Rachel Lininger Gerry amp Mil-
dred Mikas and Jerry Moreau Thank you all
Your help is greatly appreciated
The next work parties will be June 14th amp 28th
Your help is always needed The more volun-
teers we have at the Park the better for the epies
and the display There is much to do so
whether you can do a lot or a little everyone is
welcome and all work is appreciated If you
canrsquot volunteer how about making a donation of
some sort Money is always helpful but help
could also take the form of doing research and
grant writing or donating equipment and sup-
plies

In May we had our Annual Sale at the Safari
Park Although it was not as lucrative as last
year it raised a good amount that allows us to
maintain the epi collection here Overall the sale
was good we had lots of fun and we spread the
word about epis
I am always so impressed by the wonderful and
dedicated volunteers we have who come out and
make a difference at the Park SDES has much
to be proud of All the work we do at the Park
makes a tremendous difference and creates more
beauty in the world In June we will be hanging
more pipe in the workhouse to better organize
the plants We will also be designing a new
entrance into the display house Someone
discovered a grant opportunity through the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and
passed the information on to Cary Sharp (head
horticulturist at the Park) Hopefully with both
SDES and the Safari Park working together on
the application we will be awarded the grant
Then we can move ahead with the makeover of
the display
Helping out at the Annual Sale on May 3-4 were
Ron Ashman Jean Bonner Sandra Chapin Ron
amp Velma Crain Cindy Decker Marie Dempe-
wolf Bill Greene Bob Holzinger Beth Jackson
Chuck Largin Rachel Lininger Gerry amp Mil-
dred Mikas and Jerry Moreau Thank you all
Your help is greatly appreciated
The next work parties will be June 14th amp 28th
Your help is always needed The more volun-
teers we have at the Park the better for the epies
and the display There is much to do so
whether you can do a lot or a little everyone is
welcome and all work is appreciated If you
canrsquot volunteer how about making a donation of
some sort Money is always helpful but help
could also take the form of doing research and
grant writing or donating equipment and sup-
plies
If you are interested in joining the fun and
learning a lot about epis in the process come
and volunteer at the Park Information on how
to sign up can be found on the website can be
found at wwwSanDiegoEpiorg click on the
Safari Park tab or contact Jerry at

Protect new growth and long stems from wind
damage
