Era of Good Feelings ??Growth of BOTH Nationalism & Sectionalism
1815-1830
Growth of “republican culture” in this period stems
from many factors including:
Universal White Manhood Suffrage &
“Republican Motherhood”
But, what “republican” means is controversial. A stronger
nation or more freedom to follow local priorities??
BOTH Nationalism & Sectionalism grow following War of 1812
or
Economic
Nationalism
ExamplesHenry Clay’s “American System”
- Re-charter of BUS
- Higher “Protective” Tariff
- Some Federally Funded
“Internal Improvements”
Cultural NationalismExamples
• Celebration of War /Military Heroes (ex: national
anthem & new capital, WH Harrison & A Jackson)
•Authors & Artists (ex: Noah Webster, Washington
Irving & “Hudson River School” of landscape painters)
Legal
Nationalism
Ex: John
Marshall’s
Rulings
- National Supremacy &
- Protection of Private
Property
Diplomatic Nationalism
Ex: Monroe Doctrine•Non Colonization
• Non Intervention
But, at the same time nation was uniting in
some ways, Sectionalism was growing…
Industrial Revolution
Begins in New England (North)
Ex: Textile Mills
North wants pro industry policies
(ex: protective tariff & internal improvements)
West wants more cheap land for
agriculture & federally funded internal
improvements to transport products
Southern “Cotton Kingdom” grows after invention of Cotton Gin
South has stronger desire to protect
its “Peculiar Institution” of slavery with no tariffs
Missouri Compromise (1820) - a temporary effort to reduce the
growing sectional tensions over slavery…political divisions
grow along sectional lines. Era of “Good Feelings” short lived.
