This brochure is destined for giving you a look at the nearly 15 years’ work of the ÉrMe Business Network and its achievements as well as for introducing them to our members and friends. All our achievements, mistakes and recoveries represent our common history, an integral part of our life – including those, who are active members, friends, supporters of ÉrMe even today or those, who are now looking for their fulfilment further from us, in some other areas of life.

We would not have been able to achieve our plans and initiatives if we had not met on our way the supporters and helpers, who provided resources for us and regarded the necessary finan-cial resources as one of the means needed for the realization of something good.

For further extensive and current information on the Érme Business Network – the Statute, which is considered as our deed of foundation, news about the organisation and its members as well as events – please visit our website on ermehalo.hu.

Budapest, November 2014.

We are thankful to our Fathers, who help ÉrMe and lead us spiritually, for the useful questions and for their support that helped us find the right path as well as to our Bishops for their unconditional trust in us.

“...the goal of participation in business life is not the business success itself...”

Just over ten years after the fall of communism, a friendship group comprising Hungarian, Chris-tian entrepreneurs is founded as a result of the common way of thinking of 12 Hungarian entre-preneurs. Their goal is to find answers to the question: May their Christian faith be reconciled with their entrepreneurship? What does “being Christian and running a business” mean? Must they feel guilty because they live under better financial conditions than many other fellow-countrymen of theirs? Is making profit a sin? And so on...

More and more people join the friendship group, ÉrMe takes on a club’s character, and a kind of club life is taking shape. The members meet at fixed times each month, the deed of foundation, the ÉrMe Statute – which is still unchanged – is drawn up. The membership rules are established and the club organises its first advent charity auction at the end of 2003. This event has been organised each year since then.

The books entitled Managing as if Faith Mattered and Entrepreneurs differently are published in Hungary in 2004. The latter publication containing interviews with the leaders of ÉrMe – “érmés” entrepreneurs – contributed to the theoretical foundation of the public function of ÉrMe.The number of members reaches 70 persons operating in diverse professional and business areas (see the end of the publication), therefore the first brochure specially intended for internal use, providing business information for the members on each other’s companies is prepared in order to facilitate business transactions among members. Already at that time, it was one of the most important objectives of ÉrMe that its members should come together not only within the club, but their relationships should become stronger even during their everyday and business activities.

The number of members of the ÉrMe Club reaches 100 and the number of those interested ex-ceeds 300 persons. It became necessary that the club, which had operated informally until that time, continued to operate in a form that is also accepted by the Hungarian law. After lengthy consultations, the members decided to set up three organisations: a foundation, a non-profit enterprise and an association.

The ÉrMe foundation (Business Value Preserver Foundation) has three main functions:a. it preserves and supervises the spirit of ÉrMe, which has also been put down in the Statute.b. organises the ÉrMe clubs,c. extends the knowledge of Christian entrepreneurs by organising trainings, supports them to reinforce their faith and to reconcile it with their vocation.

The basic function of ÉrMe Foundation is to lay the foundations of the network structure of ÉrMe, as well as to organise and develop it.The non-profit enterprise (Value Adding Non-profit Ltd as it is called today) is the project manage-ment organisation of the network, its owners are the members of ÉrMe, who founded the enter-prise by providing for the share capital and laid the foundations of starting the activities. Mutatis mutandis, the members leave the possibly resulting profits in the organisation, in full. The association, the KÉRME (Association for the Preservation of Christian Values), comprised those members who considered a more tightly closed and formal operation appropriate for them-selves. The members of the association form a club, the KÉRME Club.By establishing the three legal entities, the foundations of the ÉrMe Business Network had been laid down. The three legal entities and the two clubs were created.

In 2005, ÉrMe takes part in the conference in Vatican City organised for the 40th anniversary of the publication of Gaudium et Spes.

As the first step of establishing the network, the Foundation sets up an internal, closed Internet network.

More and more construction craftsmen join ÉrMe and they establish the ÉrME Craftsman Club. The KÉRME Association joins the organisation of UNIAPAC.

In order to counterbalance the expected consequences of the exploding global economic crisis as well as to help several Christian employees having been made redundant to find a job, the HR Workshop is founded – it achieves many successful job placements and starts to organise job fairs, where real job opportunities are offered; furthermore, jobseekers are prepared for the job market e.g. by trainings.

The website of the ÉrMe Business Network, ermehalo.hu, as well as an electronic newsletter at that time under the name “Bridge-builder Business Magazine” is launched. What are the responsibilities and the mission of an entrepreneur? A significant part of the domestic society has a prejudice against entrepreneurs due to the years of communism. It is realised that one of the most important tasks of ÉrMe is to change this generalising and distorted image. At the end of 2009, a series of educational and informative lectures entitled Bucket List, intended for 11-12th Grade secondary school students is launched. Within the frameworks of this programme, we hold “discussion classes” of 45 minutes on entrepreneurship, the responsibili-ties of an entrepreneur as well as the role of money in more than 300 secondary school classes.

At the beginning of the year – when celebrating the tenth anniversary of the foundation of ÉrMe – a wider introduction of the ÉrMe Business Network to the public is started: press releases are sent out, press conferences are organised, media appearances follow each other, the first open evening of ÉrMe is organised.A Dominican Sister, Baritz Laura invents and organises the training Christian Social Principles in the Economy (KETEG) at the Sapientia Theological College. The ÉrMe Foundation takes on the complete management of the training as well as the professional performance of tasks related to its organisation, popularisation and advertisement. Supporting KETEG as well as finding and providing technical and financial background for the training becomes one of the strategic tasks of ÉrMe. ÉrMe employs staff to perform the increased amount of tasks and the operational management is taken over by a body consisting of the leaders of the organisations. Due to the development

of the network, the functional adaptation of organic management methods is a new challenge, which enables the managers to effectively perform the increasing amount of tasks within the growing organisation, even in the form of volunteering: The managers of the individual organisations – forming a body – meet at regular times and

consult on matters regarding the organisation. The managers representing their own organisations take part in the consultations on an equal

basis. The individual ÉrMe clubs and organisations organise their activities autonomously. The body

of managers or the Foundation may formulate recommendations on individual issues to-wards the organisations.

The organisations organise their activities in such a way that they can help and develop the whole community, the ÉrMe Business Network and their own, local community.

In a settlement near Budapest, called Páty – on the basis of a circle of friends formed earlier from local entrepreneurs sympathising with the objectives of ÉrMe – the ÉrMe Páty Club is established. After the highly successful Bucket List Program, the ÉrMe Junior Program was also launched and the ÉrMe Junior Club is established in 2011. It turns into a club for young Christian career-start-ers aged between 14 and 28. Many ÉrMe-Club members’ sons and daughters join the Junior Club. Many ÉrMe Club members try to help young people: they support them either as start-up entre-preneurs or as career starter employees by means of mentoring programs and job opportunities.

The Dominican Sister, Helen Alford, the co-author of the book entitled Managing as if Faith Mat-tered, visits Hungary. On that occasion, an international conference is organised at the Sapientia Theological College, in collaboration with the ÉrMe Business Network and the KETEG; the main topic is “social enterprises”.The website of ÉrMe, ermehalo.hu, is renewed: since that time, news on the life of the network, on the activities of enterprises belonging to ÉrMe, reviews of articles, publications and events on the relationship of Christianity and the economy are regularly published, in addition to the basic information about the organization. We launch the ÉrMe Network Newsletter, for which anybody – apart from the members of the network – can sign up, who is interested in the issues and infor-mation important to ÉrMe.

As a result of the common way of thinking and work of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Confer-ence, the KETEG training and the ÉrMe Foundation, the event Catholic Social Days is organised

for the first time in Hungary. The event, with its approximately 18 thousand visitors, became the most successful Catholic event that year; the diversity of the Hungarian Catholic Church as well as its everyday work performed quietly and with humility in the Hungarian society was introduced during the three-day event. The uniform and unconditional trust and support of the Hungarian bishops related to the organisation of such a big event is elevating, inspirating and honourable for the ÉrMe Business Network.

At the beginning of the year, the ÉrMe Bakony Club is established, which is intended to comprise the Christian entrepreneurs and company managers living in Veszprém and in the neighbouring settlements. The ÉrMe Business Network organises the conference entitled The Economics of Happiness in Budapest also in collaboration with the KETEG. More than three hundred people visit the event clarifying theoretical questions. On that occasion, ÉrMe has the important Vatican doc-ument entitled The Vocation of Business Leader translated and makes it available on its web-site.On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of starting the seminars “Management by Jesus” organised by the Jesuit monk, Kiss Ulrich, a symposium takes place assisted by ÉrMe. Its main topic is start-up enterprises, under the title: It is always good to undertake. The ÉrMe Business Network organises the next event of the series called “Catholic Social Days” in Miskolc. In spite of the rainy weather, nearly four thousand people visited the event. There is a clear demand for establishing an ÉrMe Club in Miskolc. The three-year series of events related to the program Value of Values organised by KÉRME is launched, its objective is to introduce the answers worded on the basis of Christian values to the questions raised by the prolonged economic crisis into the public consciousness. At the first conference of the series, the program is introduced and the Hungarian edition of the document entitled The Vocation of Business Leader is published in printing on that occasion.

Page 16: ÉrMe Business Network

Being an entrepreneur is a vocation – we cannot live otherwise than as entrepreneurs! Why are we not satisfied with the maximisation of our business profits, why do we devote our time, en-ergy, money to a nobler purpose? The reason is perhaps that we feel if we increased only our material assets, it would mean burying our talents. We are given a vocation: we are shaping and transforming the world around us, we play active parts in the Creator’s work. Realising it is more than profit. The successfulness of our enterprise is not to be underestimated, but it is far from sufficient to achieve our human and spiritual accomplishment! If it was so, I would be in captiv-ity! My experience has shown that we, in ÉrMe feel so: we can only multiply our talents while working for achieving a higher purpose, in a community. What the past nearly 15 years of ÉrMe means to me is the evolution of our existence as human beings with spirits and as entrepreneurs, which is full of struggles and during which we all intend to add something to this “Good”, to the common good.

According to my experience, many Christian entrepreneurs and managers are really lonely in a spiritual sense. On the one hand because the business partners, they get in touch with, cannot understand what they are doing in the business life as Christians, why they want to enforce Chris-tian values in a place, where it is – apparently – not appropriate. On the other hand, the members of Christian communities also tend to look at those working in the business life with distrust: they cannot understand how someone can take part in something that can – in their opinion – only be a materialistic, tricky and exploiting world. I consider the existence of the ÉrMe Business Network immensely important because it can give a spiritual home to those who would like to be good Christians and good businessmen at the same time. It is clear that creating harmony in the everyday life is not such a thing that could be easily learnt from a manual and that would work afterwards. To achieve this, a live community, a lot of discussions, common ways of thinking, listening to lectures are needed – ÉrME offers plenty of opportunities to do so. As a Board mem-ber of the ÉrMe Foundation, I am working hard in order to provide background and resources for everything as well as to support the birth of new ideas. Recently, I have actively taken part in those business breakfasts, where we talk about how we could give more business opportunities to the enterprises belonging to the ÉrMe Business Network by exploiting our personal relation-ships and our ability to cooperate.

Entrepreneurship is a vocation…

16

Page 17: ÉrMe Business Network

The basic idea of the ÉrMe Business Network is that a business enterprise may also be made suc-cessful by using Christian approaches and values - what is more, perhaps it is the only way to be really successful... If this realisation spreads widely, it can make the society, where we live, better. For this reason, it is our responsibility that ÉrMe sets an example; it should be leaven in the world. When I was invited to ÉrMe, I was enthusiastic to join it immediately and since that time I have been trying to assist - as a board member for many years - to build out a strong network based on the common values and trust: we are trying to confirm each other in business matters and give each other opportunities. Primarily, it is the role of catalysts that I have got: I keep my eyes open and turn my attention to the persons who are worth inviting, who need confirmation, who we can learn from. It was an important step when I managed to start the new ÉrME Club in my place of living, in Páty; it has also served as an example for as well as encouraged the launch of several other local clubs.

In my region I can see that the Christian communities are – thanks to God – becoming stronger and multiplying and there are more and more issues related to which they cooperate with each other. It demonstrates the existence of such an underlying humility and wisdom, for which there is a great demand in the Carpathian Basin, and especially in Hungary. It is true at home and in our wider environment as well that communities based on the values of the universal culture yield fruit, experience the beauty of the creation day by day and they are fit for modern approaches, way of thinking, attitude and actions, which go back to the traditions at the same time. For all these, I am trying to do something as a private person and as an entrepreneur.

There are some who are not interested in the relationship between the Christian values and en-trepreneurship and there are some who are. I had already belonged to the latter category, when I was not yet the owner of my own enterprise. Several of my articles and interviews were pub-lished in connection with this topic, so it was unambiguous that I would get some responsibilities related to communication within the ÉrMe Business Network as well. On the one hand, as the editor in chief of the website of the Network, ermehalo.hu, I work on making the attitude and values of the ÉrMe community available and comprehensible for the wider public. The other main function of the website is that it should be a reliable means of collaboration, communica-tion and information flow among the members of the Network.

We are building an organic organisation and network, the framework of which is given by finding a healthy proportion between FLEXIBILTY AND ORDER at any time. Basically successful enterprises or those striving for success are invited and awaited to the net-work.

According to our experience, those are considered successful:

who perform socially useful activities; the development of whose organisation is sustainable; who reliably take care of others; who can create long-term financial security; whose activities elicit appreciation within the trade; who operate in a stabile and reliable way.

Page 22: ÉrMe Business Network

KÉRME CLUB – Christian Value Preservation AssociationThe Christian Value Preservation Association was established with the aim of finding relationship with those who seek as a businessman or an entrepreneur to make the world better, and who wish to do more for those whom they are responsible for. Given the name and mission of KÉRME, the association is concerned with sustainability, social justice, and social responsibility regarding several topics, as well as it deals with the leadership responsibility and activities related to them.

ÉRME PÁTY CLUBGathers entrepreneurs living in Páty and its surrounding settlements, most of whom have been attending events organized by the Budapest Club. The club focuses on strengthening local com-munities, performing tasks arising locally, and making improvements to the local living space.

ÉRME BAKONY CLUBThe new organization of ÉrMe aims at gathering the Christian entrepreneurs living dispersedly in the central western region of the country, often not knowing each other. With the cessation of the Budapest-centeredness of ÉrMe, new values are added to the network. With internal sources available for the network, ÉrMe supports and strengthens local initiatives whether they are of business or social importance.

ÉRME MISKOLC CLUBThe Catholic Social Days in Miskolc (KATTÁRS) in 2014 was organized with the help of the local Catholic entrepreneurs. ÉrMe Business Network aimed to solve the most possible tasks with local entrepreneurs involved, and to rely on their local knowledge and selfless help. The indirect result of the cooperation is the organization of ÉrMe Miskolc Club. The new club will hopefully carry the spirit of KATTÁRS and ÉrMe to the North-East of Hungary.

ÉRME JUNIOR CLUBMany of the children of the members of other ÉrMe clubs who represent the next generation and are entering the job market join this junior club. This organization is the place of freshness, seeking ways, as well as creating innovative ideas and initiatives. This contributes a lot to the ef-ficient functioning of the entire ÉrMe Business Network; in return, the network is trying to provide professional and human support to help young members.

22

Page 23: ÉrMe Business Network

ÉRME CONSTRUCTIONAL ROUNDTABLE, ÉRME PROFESSIONALS’ CLUBÉrMe Professionals’ Club was founded to provide a meeting and cooperation opportunity for the young professionals working mainly in the construction business. The members of ÉrMe Con-structional Roundtable, which was established later, come from the other local ÉrMe club mem-bers; they provide a wider spectrum of construction services (in addition to the construction, design, building material distribution and real estate development are also included in the scope of activities). The members of the Roundtable have cooperated in several important construc-tional projects, and relied on the entrepreneurs of the professionals’ club as far as possible.

ÉRME BUSINESS MORNING CLUBAn informal organization specifically focusing on business relationships: every two weeks, early in the morning, before business life starts, the entrepreneurs of ÉrMe who aim to strengthen the business potential of the network, or have business news to share with the members of the network, as well as seek or offer business opportunities, have breakfast together. From the profit of the businesses realized within the framework of the network, the members have provided support for the communities. The funds provided during the recent years have been covering the salary of the manager assigned by ÉrMe as well as the publishing costs and the expenses arising from the organization of conferences.

ÉrMe aims to connect the people and organizations preserving basic values of the Christian Hungarians when doing business, and believe that the goal of business profitability is not only success, but creating the financial basis for the solidarity with the needy living in our close and distant environment as well as ensuring the equality of opportunity.

In accordance with the aforementioned, members of ÉrMe shall comply with the following four basic criteria:

1. Actively participate in economic (business) processes (in the broadest sense of economic and business processes).

2. Recognize and actively strive to realize traditional Christian values in daily and business life.3. Declare to be Hungarian, and know the Hungarian language as well.4. Cooperation in ÉrMe is based on the Christian brotherly love.

Basic principles of the organization, namely the Christian Business Rule:

CHRISTIAN IN ITS CONTENT: that is, not tolerating any un-Christian behaviour as regards the member him/herself. Neither the organization, nor its members are allowed to overstep mor-al and ethical boundaries and act in a manner contrary Christian morality. Decisions on ethical issues shall be taken by the members of ÉrMe on the basis of their own internal values.

CHRISTIAN IN ITS FORM: that is, the formal elements of Christianity are present in the organ-ization even if in their ecumenical form.
