FOREWORD
The first Catecholamine Symposium was held at the National Institutes of
Health, Bethesda, Maryland, October 16 to 18, 1958. That symposium (Pharma-
col. Rev. 11: 241-566, 1959) summarized information and ideas in this field up
to 1958 and stimulated many scientists in their subsequent researches. The
decision to hold a Second Catecholarnine Symposium was made in April 1964,
and an Organizing Committee was created, composed of J. Axeirod, B. B. Brodie,
C. A. Chidsey, E. Costa, J. R. Crout, D. H. Efron, N. J. Giarman, i\I. Gold-
stein, S. Kaufman, S. Kety, I. J. Kopin, C. C. Porter, F. E. Shideman, P. A.
Shore, A. Sjoerdsma, S. Spector, D. Steinberg, C. Stone, E. W. Sutherland, and
H. Weil-Malherbe, with S. Udenfriend as Chairman. This committee was re-
sponsible for arranging the scientific program and made the decision to hold the
symposium in Europe. The gracious offer of Prof. S. Garattini to use the facili-
ties of the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche “Mario Negri” in Milano, Italy,
was accepted and the Symposium was held at that institute July 4 to 9, 1965.
Prof. S. Garattini and his associate, Prof. A. Leonardi, were responsible for
creating an environment most conducive to the presentation and exchange of
scientific ideas.
The Second Catecholamine Symposium received its major financial support
from the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health,
Bethesda, Maryland (NIMH contract no. PH 43-65-54). This was awarded to
the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, which
accordingly assumed the responsibility for administering the contract. Its admin-
istration was delegated to the Executive Officer of the Society, Dr. E. Cook. Ad-
ditional financial support was received from the Ministero della Pubblica Istru-
zione and the Ministero della Sanit#{224}of the Italian government, and from the
following private organizations: Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, Ill., U.S.A.;
American Instrument Co., Silver Spring, Md., U.S.A.; Astra Pharmaceutical
Products, Inc., Worcester, Mass., U.S.A.; Boehringer Sohn, Ingelheim am
Rhein, Germany; Calbiochem, Los Angeles, Calif., U.S.A.; CIBA S.p.A., Milano,
Italy; Crinos S.p.A., Civello di Villaguardia, Como, Italy; Geigy S.A., Basel,
Switzerland; Geigy Research Laboratories, Yonkers, N.Y., U.S.A.; Hoffmann
La Roche S.A., Basel, Switzerland; Institute for Medical Research and Studies,
New York, U.S.A.; Lepetit S.p.A., Milano, Italy; N’Iaggioni S.p.A., ?Tilano,
Italy; Martini & Rossi Co., Milano, Italy; Merck Sharp and Dohme Co., Inc.,
Rahway, N.J., U.S.A.; New England Nuclear Corporation, Boston, U.S.A.:
Olivetti, Ivrea, Italy; Roussel Uclaf, Paris, France; Sandoz S.p.A., i\Iilano,

Hanover, Germany and Exibo Italiana S.r.L., Milano, Italy; Smith Kline &
French Laboratories, Philadelphia, Pa., U.S.A.; Sterling Winthrop Research
Institute, Rensselaer, N.Y., U.S.A.; Warner Lambert Research Institute, I\ior-
ris Plains, N.J., U.S.A.: Wellcome Foundation Ltd., London, England; Well-
come Foundation, Tuckahoe, N.Y., U.S.A.; Academic Press, Inc., New York,

4 FOREWORD
Participation in the Symposium did not impose upon the contributors strict
uniformity in presentation, order of material, or nomenclature. Accordingly, for
purposes of publication these diversities remain. Special problems raised by
variations in the names of compounds, of techniques and of apparatus will be
evident. Differences in nomenclature, indeed, still may emphasize an ever-
present need within the medical sciences for continued efforts toward a commonusage. In accordance with the policy of Pharmacological Reviews, the editors
have attempted to follow either of two canons of spelling and nomenclature,
the British and the American, according to the author’s preference. A reporter
was assigned to each session to provide an account of the comments made duringthe discussion period, including his own editorial observations on the proceedings
at that session.
The following deserve thanks for their trouble and care in participating in the
editorial process: Charles Chidsey, Erminio Costa, Robert F. Furchgott, Sey-
mour Kety, George B. Koelle, Neil C. Moran, and J. R. Vane.
