U.S. Postage PAID Chatham, Il Permit No. 9 We took a break from our study of Living Spiritually in the Material World last Sunday night to look at an article from Touchstone that addressed the need to make certain our thoughts and songs about God include an adequate picture of His glory and majesty. We had spent a couple of weeks being reminded how important it is to keep God in the forefront of our mind, and the chapter well be going to this Sunday is on how God speaks to us, but its very important that our picture of God is accurate. In a culture that focuses on individual needs, and views the purpose of life as having our felt needs met and feeling good, its tempting for churches to begin focusing more on what God can do for us than on who He is. Religious freedom allows us the freedom to worship, but it also means we have the freedom of religious choice. And when religious choice is available, theres a tendency for churches to become little more than spiritual boutiques that present themselves as the answer to needs and desires. And there is a tendency to sing songs that focus more on what God does for us than who He is. The author was especially critical of a popular religious song that makes it possible to view God as nothing more than a therapist, a reassuring friend, or even a boyfriend who is always there and who never says no. While that may be true, its obviously not wrong to think of God as our friend. In fact, we sang What a Friend We Have in Jesus on our hymn singing Sunday. That wasnt, however, the only hymn we sang. Carol informed me that we actually sang 22 hymns, and Duane made sure we sang the hymn he always asks for, Holy, Holy, Holy! Abraham was known as a friend of God, and by His grace we can all be. But we must never forget that our friend is more than a friend. He is the Lord God Almighty! We took a break from our study of Living Spiritually in the Material World last Sunday night to look at an article from Touchstone that addressed the need to make certain our thoughts and songs about God include an adequate picture of His glory and majesty. We had spent a couple of weeks being reminded how important it is to keep God in the forefront of our mind, and the chapter we’ll be going to this Sunday is on how God speaks to us, but it’s very important that our picture of God is accurate. STATISTICS

Our trip to Pumpkin Creek Farms was fun as always. Sutton, Kiayla, Evie, Aiden and Caleb had a great time. Thanks for going!

THANKSGIVING DINNER Our annual Thanksgiving Dinner has been scheduled for Sunday evening, November 21. The dinner will be preceded by a speed painting presentation by Matt Lovell, a grandson-in-law of Jim and Nancy Montgomery.

As I announced on Sunday, the James Project could use some assistance from supporting churches over the next few weeks as they prepare to move their supplies to a new location. Over time, the donations collected to assist the foster care community has grown as the need increases. Olivia would like to weed through the clothes, bedding and other necessities to make sure the items they keep during the move are of good quality for future families. If you are free on Monday, October 25th from 5:30-7:30pm, we would love to have your help. Olivia will be ordering some food for us to munch on as we work. Kids are invited too! Plenty of jobs will not require lifting and we would love to have the kids serve along side of us. Please let me know if you will be able to make it!

A new study from Heaven on Earth: What the Bible Teaches about Life to Come will begin this Sunday morning in the adult classroom during the Sunday School hour. All adults are welcome to attend.

A new Bible Study for women will begin this Thursday at the church at 6:30. All women are invite to come.

High School Our annual murder mystery will be at 7:00pm on Saturday, November 13th here at CCC. This year one of you will play the role of Sherlock Holmes, what we have to decide is whether you are helping solve or actually committed the crime. We have enough characters for 18 people. In a couple weeks I will get a firm list of who is planning on attending. Then, I can give you your role for the evening so you can begin to think about your outfit, etc. This is always a fun night so I hope you can make it! Your friends are welcome too!

FROM THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS at “The Complementarity of Man and Woman: An International Interreligious Colloquium,” convened by the Vatican, November 17, 2014. “What made the traditional family remarkable, a work of high religious art, is what it brought together: sexual drive, physical desire, friendship, companionship, emotional kinship and love, the begetting of children and their protection and care, their early education and induction into an identity and a history. Seldom has any institution woven together so many different drives and desires, roles and responsibilities. It made sense of the world and gave it a human face, the face of love. For a whole variety of reasons, some to do with medical developments like birth control, in vitro fertilization, and other genetic interventions, some to do with moral change, like the idea that we are free to do whatever we like so long as it does not harm others, some to do with a transfer of responsibilities from the individual to the state, and other and more profound changes in the culture of the West, almost everything that marriage once brought together has now been spilt apart. Sex has been divorced from love, love from commitment, marriage from having children, and having children from responsibility for their care.”

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

Our annual blood drive has been scheduled for Saturday, November 13th. Please plan now to give if you can.

Jr/Sr High School This Saturday should be a blast! We most likely will have over 20 people here for the party and there is still plenty of room for more! Feel free to invite your friends, we would love to have them. Here is what we will be doing. We’ll start by eating some pizza and Halloween inspired snacks that Chef Tina will be making. Afterwards, we have a couple fun games planned and are researching a few more. Weather permitting, this year I hope to have a little fire going outside so we can utilize our yard for some of the activities throughout the night. Then, of course, we will have our traditional pumpkin carving contest. You must BRING YOUR OWN PUMPKIN for you and your partner to carve. Be thinking of a potential design now! Even practice it this week if you really want to be crowned the winner. Please be here at 6:00pm to start the festivities and we should be done by 9:00pm.

Ladies Lunch Bunch All ladies are invited to bring a sack lunch to the church this Thursday at 11:45 for a time of fellowship, encouragement, and prayer.
