WISDOM FROM POPE FRANCIS

Pope Francis warned against “gentrification of the heart” as a consequence of comfortable living, and called on the faithful to “touch the flesh of Christ” by caring for the needy. The pope’s words came in a hom-ily during Mass in St. Peter’s Square May 12, when he canonized the first Colombian saint, as well as a Mexican nun and some 800 Italians mar-tyred by Ottoman Turks in the 15th century. Mexico’s St. Maria Guada-lupe Garcia Zavala (1878-1963), the pope said, gave up a “comfortable life to follow the call of Jesus, taught people to love poverty, in order the more to love the poor and the sick. How much damage does the comfortable life, well-being, do,” the pope added, looking up from his prepared text. “The gentrification of the heart paralyzes us.” The Mexican saint, known as Mother Lupita, “knelt on the floor of the hospital before the sick, before the abandoned, to serve them with tenderness and compassion,” and in do-ing so, “touched the flesh of Christ,” he said.

MEMORIAL DAY MAY 26

Memorial Day is a United States federal holi-day which occurs every year on the final Monday

of May.. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the Unit-ed States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decora-tion Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century Me-morial Day had been extended to honor all Ameri-cans who have died while in the military service[3]. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. By the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general expressions of memory, as people visited the graves of their deceased rela-tives in church cemeteries, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became a long week-end increasingly devoted to shopping, family gather-ings, fireworks, trips to the beach, and national media events. Annual Decoration Days for particular cem-eteries are held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountains. In cases involving a fam-ily graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family re-union to which some people travel hundreds of miles. People gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with kinfolk and oth-ers. There often is a religious service and a “dinner on the ground,” the traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that this prac-tice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the “memorial day” idea. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Vet-erans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. mili-tary veterans, living or dead.

Join St. Mary at the 8 AM Mass to commemo-rate those who died serving our country, and then at 10 am at Oak Hill Cemetery for the annual ceremo-nies and the laying of wreathes for the deceased Vet-erans. Usually 1/3 of the people there are St. Mary parishioners.

THE HOLY TRINITY

—A letter by St Athanasius

It will not be out of place to consider the an-cient tradition, teaching and faith of the Catholic Church, which was revealed by the Lord, proclaimed by the apostles and guarded by the fathers. For upon this faith the Church is built, and if anyone were to lapse from it, he would no longer be a Christian either in fact or in name. We acknowledge the Trinity, holy and perfect, to consist of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In this Trinity there is no intrusion of any alien element or of anything from outside, nor is the Trinity a blend of creative and created being. It is a wholly creative and energising reality, self-consistent and undivided in its active power, for the Father makes all things through the Word and in the Holy Spirit, and in this way the unity of the holy Trinity is preserved. Accord-ingly, in the Church, one God is preached, one God who is above all things and through all things and in all things. God is above all things as Father, for he is principle and source; he is through all things through the Word; and he is in all things in the Holy Spirit. Writing to the Corinthians about spiritual mat-ters, Paul traces all reality back to one God, the Father, saying: Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in everyone. Even the gifts that the Spirit dispenses to in-dividuals are given by the Father through the Word. For all that belongs to the Father belongs also to the Son, and so the graces given by the Son in the Spirit are true gifts of the Father. Similarly, when the Spirit dwells in us, the Word who bestows the Spirit is in us too, and the Father is present in the Word. This is the meaning of the text: My Father and I will come to him and make our home with him. For where the light is, there also is the radiance; and where the ra-diance is, there too are its power and its resplendent grace. This is also Paul’s teaching in his second let-ter to the Corinthians: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. For grace and the gift of the Trinity are given by the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit. Just as grace is given from the Father through the Son, so there could be no communication of the gift to us except in the Holy Spirit. But when we share in the Spirit, we possess the love of the Father, the grace of the Son and the fellowship of the Spirit himself.

MEMORIAL DAY 26 DE MAYO El Día de los Caídos es un feriado de Estados Unidos en homenaje a los soldados

estadounidenses muertos en combate. Se celebra oficial-mente el último lunes de mayo desde 1971. Para muchos historiadores es difícil precisar el mo-mento en que se celebró esta fecha por primera vez, que originalmente se llamó Día de la Decoración, porque se decoraban las tumbas de los soldados. Se calcula que hay una veintena de ciudades que reclamaban haber inaugu-rado la fecha, inclusive antes del fin de la Guerra Civil, cu-ando mujeres del sur decoraban las tumbas de los militares caídos en combate. Oficialmente, el lugar de nacimiento del Día de los Caídos es Waterloo, Nueva York, por decisión del presi-dente Lyndon B. Johnson, desde mayo de 1966. La fecha en sí fue proclamada el 5 de mayo de 1868 por el general John Logan, comandante nacional del Gran Ejército de la República, y se conmemoró por primera vez el 30 de mayo de ese mismo año. Ese día se colocaron flores en las tumbas de soldados de la Unión y de los Confederados, en el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington. El primer estado en reconocer la fecha como feria-do fue Nueva York, en 1873. Hacia 1890 todos los estados del norte reconocían el feriado, pero los del sur se negaron a hacerlo y mantuvieron sus propias fechas hasta el fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial. A partir de ese momento, el Día de los Caídos dejó de ser una fecha sólo para recordar a los muertos de la Guerra Civil y se convirtió en un fe-riado para los soldados caídos en todas las guerras. En 1971 el Congreso de Estados Unidos aprobó el Acta Nacional de Feriados. Fue el momento en que se de-cidió que el Día de los Caídos se conmemoraría el último lunes de mayo, con un fin de semana de tres días de duelo. Sin embargo, los estados del sur mantienen dife-rentes fechas para recordar a sus caídos durante la Guerra Civil. En Texas se realiza el homenaje el 19 de enero; en Alabama, Florida, Georgia y Misisipi el 26 de abril; en Carolina del sur el 10 de mayo, y en Luisiana y Tenesí el 3 de junio. La fecha cobró un significado especial a partir de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en la que murieron 400 mil sol-dados estadounidenses entre 1941 y 1945, durante los en-frentamientos con los ejércitos de Alemania, Italia y Japón. Más de 100 mil murieron en la Primera Guerra Mundial, entre 1914 y 1918. En la guerra de Corea murieron poco más de 33 mil militares de Estados Unidos, a principios de la década de los 50. En la cruenta guerra de Vietnan, de nueve años de duración entre 1966 y 1975, murieron 58 mil soldados norteamericanos. En la actual guerra de Irak han muerto poco más de cuatro mil soldados de Estados Unidos desde 2003. Más de 500 han muerto en Afganistán desde 2001. En Estados Unidos, aun los que se oponen a las guerras rinden homenaje a los soldados caídos en com-bate. En el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington hay más de 300 mil soldados sepultados. También hay un monumento al soldado desconocido. Santa María celebrará una Misa a las 8:00 am en honor de nuestros soldados caídos. Después a las 10:00, participaremos en las fiestas anuales en el panteón de Oak Hill para honrarlos con toda la comunidad de Escondido.

SANTÍSIMA TRINIDAD—San Atanasio, obispo

Siempre resultará provechoso esforzarse en profundizar el contenido de la antigua tradición, de la doctrina y la fe de la Iglesia católica, tal como el Señor nos la entregó, tal como la predicaron los apóstoles y la conservaron los santos Padres. En ella, efectiva-mente, está fundamentada la Iglesia, de manera que todo aquel que se aparta de esta fe deja de ser cristiano y ya no merece el nombre de tal. Existe, pues, una Trinidad, santa y perfecta, de la cual se afirma que es Dios en el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo, que no tiene mezclado ningún el-emento extraño o externo, que no se compone de uno que crea y de otro que es creado, sino que toda ella es creadora, es consistente por naturaleza, y su actividad es única. El Padre hace todas las cosas a través del que es su Palabra, en el Espíritu Santo. De esta manera, queda a salvo la unidad de la santa Trinidad. Así, en la Iglesia se predica un solo Dios, que lo trasciende todo, y lo penetra todo, y lo invade todo. Lo trasciende todo, en cuanto Padre, principio y fuente; lo penetra todo, por su Palabra; lo invade todo, en el Espíritu Santo. San Pablo, hablando a los corintios acerca de los dones del Espíritu, lo reduce todo al único Dios Padre, como al origen de todo, con esas palabras: Hay diversidad de dones, pero un mismo Espíritu; hay di-versidad de ministerios, pero un mismo Señor; y hay diversidad de funciones, pero un mismo Dios que obra todo en todos. El Padre es quien da, por mediación de aquel que es su Palabra, lo que el Espíritu distribuye a cada uno. Porque todo lo que es del Padre es también del Hijo; por esto, todo lo que da el Hijo en el Espíritu es realmente don del Padre. De manera semejante, cu-ando el Espíritu está en nosotros, lo está también la Palabra, de quien recibimos el Espíritu, y en la Pal-abra está también el Padre, realizándose así aquellas palabras: El Padre y yo vendremos a él y haremos morada en él. Porque, donde está la luz, allí está tam-bién el resplandor; y, donde está el resplandor, allí está también su eficiencia y su gracia esplendorosa. Es lo que nos enseña el mismo Pablo en su segunda carta a los Corintios, cuando dice: La gracia del Señor Jesucristo, el amor de Dios y la comunión del Espíritu Santo esté siempre con todos vosotros. Porque toda gracia o don que se nos da en la Trini-dad se nos da por el Padre, a través del Hijo, en el Espíritu Santo. Pues, así como la gracia se nos da por el Padre, a través del Hijo, así también no podemos recibir ningún don si no es en el Espíritu Santo, ya que, hechos partícipes del mismo, poseemos el amor del Padre, la gracia del Hijo y la comunión de este Espíritu.

El papa Francisco observa así con realismo, que la falta de con-ciencia que manifiestan los cristianos hace dos mil años no es solo “algo de los primeros tiempos”, sino que el Espíritu Santo “es siempre como el desconocido de nuestra fe”. «Hoy en día, muchos cristianos no saben quién es el Espíritu Santo, qué es el Espíritu Santo. Y a veces se oye: “Pero yo me organizo bien con el Padre y con el Hijo, porque rezo el Padre Nuestro al Padre, estoy en comunión con el Hijo, pero con el Espíritu Santo, no sé qué hacer...”. O te dicen: “El Espíritu Santo es la paloma, la que nos da siete dones”. Pero así el pobre Espíritu Santo está siempre al final y no en-cuentra un buen lugar en nuestra vida». el Espíritu Santo es un “Dios activo en nosotros”, un “Dios que hace recordar” que “despierta la memoria”. Jesús mismo lo explica a los apóstoles antes de Pentecostés: el Espíritu que Dios les enviará en mi nombre, asegura, “les recordará todo lo que yo les he dicho”. Lo con-trario para un cristiano, crearía una pendiente resbaladiza: «Un cristiano sin memoria no es un verdadero cristiano: es un hombre o una mujer prisionera de la coyuntura, del momento; no tiene historia.
