LAVA LAMP RETURNS A fantastic event makes a return to the city on July 30 when Lava Lamptouches down at Pulse8 on Geneva Street.

The Lava Lamp nights were set up in 2006 by Vincenzo Petruzziello whocame up with the idea of a club night organised by adults with disabilities, foradults with disabilities. Vincenzo believed it was just what Peterboroughneeded and is the only event held of its kind held in an actual nightclub!

The first club night took place back in 2007 and was such a success therehave since been five more. One of the main aims of Lava Lamp is to provide asafe environment in which adults with disabilities can relax and enjoythemselves. The event’s a great opportunity for everyone to meet new peopleand make new friends.

Before each event there are DJ workshops and stewarding workshops and itruns from 8pm until 1am.

Pulse8 Manager, Aigars, has kindly offered the venue free of charge for thisevent and Vincenzo told ESP – “His generosity has enabled us to moveforward with the Lava Lamp events and we’re sure that it’ll be a very popularvenue! I’d like to say a huge thank you to Aigars as Lava Lamp relies onmany volunteers and helpers to make the night happen, for which we’re allreally grateful.

“The Lava Lamp events have limited funding and rely on the kindness ofvolunteers, local businesses and organisations to help us where possible, such as Ken Girvan Printers in Farcet who’ve kindly printed tickets andposters for free.”

If you’d like to go along, get involved or find out about future Lava Lampnights, just give Vincenzo Petruzziello a call on 07923 843177.

THE DREADED MODULE ONE?Most bikers who've taken their motorcycle test in the last few months will tell youthere's now two parts to it. Pass them both and the examiner will hand you a passcertificate. Up until earlier this year a full bike test was done on the road – and itwas on the road where you'd be asked to complete moves such as the U-turn andemergency stop.

But now manoeuvres like these and the well documented 'swerve' are done duringthe Module One part of your test at the motorcycle test centre in Fengate. Basically, you can't take part two of the test (a 45 minute ride) until you've passed ModuleOne. And at first glance this part of the test can appear pretty daunting.

This was my final lesson before test day and luckily for me it was a Saturday, whichmeant I was able to try out Module One at the test centre where I'll be doing it forreal next month. CAM Rider offers slots for learners to familiarise themselves withwhat's required for Module One on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. I can’temphasise just how crucial it is to get a go at the test centre before the big day.

The area you take Module One on is about the size of a football pitch and it'slittered with different coloured traffic cones. Here you must:

• Demonstrate you can push your bike a short distance and park it safely.

• Complete a slow 'figure of eight' several times without putting your foot down.

• Accelerate around a bend in second gear and swerve between two cones at noless than 50 kilometres per hour before coming to a swift halt and parkingbetween two cones.

• Take the same bend in the same way (without the swerve) and perform anemergency stop, maintaining control of the bike throughout.

• Perform a U-turn inside the set parameters (average road width) without puttingyour foot down.

• Slow ride just behind the examiner (walking).

All of this sounds quite tough – and it would’ve been if the opportunity of trying outat the centre passed me by. My instructor was fantastic in breaking down eachsegment of the course, which included top advice on how to tackle the swervemanoeuvre.

This part of the test has caused controversy from the offset with instructors calling itdangerous following several incidents of riders coming off their bikes in the wet andbreaking limbs. Luckily for me the surface was dry and luckily for me I was given acomprehensive guide on how to successfully complete it wet or dry. There was aknack and I'd nailed it.

There was plenty of time to do four practice runs of the test and with one lesson leftto go (the morning of my test) I was feeling confident. Next month is the big day...

Until it does, itsresident DJs continue to play at The Red Lion and Angel Hotel cocktailbar. There's a new management team at The Angel too, hopefully theywon't put a stop to those delicious homemade cakes they do there.Another new face can be found at The Jubilee with manager Ross(formerly of The Periwig in Stammy) taking over the reins. BOXING TREAT AT CLUB METROFight fans will enjoy watching some of the city's established and up-and-comingboxers take on challengers from all over the UK when Club Metro hosts a semi-professional boxing event on August 29 from 7pm. Peterborough-based BadBoys Promotions has teamed up with Ricky English of Touch Gloves Promotionsto bring us 14 bouts featuring city lads including Rory Malone, Michael Maguire,Steve Plavecz and Arif Quaddus to name a few. Tickets (£30 standing, £40seated and £60 VIP ringside) are available through Lee on 07794 491078.

ANYONE FOR OSTRICH? The opening and closing bar merry-go-round continues in the city centre andwith it comes good and bad news. Good news first is the return of The OstrichInn (formerly Bogarts) which is set to open on August 22. Former Cometmanager Jacqui Dean is at the helm and she brings live music, open micnights, karaoke and quiz nights plus a selection of real ales and lunchtimegrub to the venue.

Not so good news is the closure of Bar Bloc, although good news is it mayresurface at another location before too long. Verve has also had its day butgood news for food lovers is it'll eventually be transformed into a new Mexicanrestaurant called Chimichanga, which is owned by the Prezzo group.

Bad news is The Bar continues to gather dust and to be honest I'm notinterested in hearing any more frustrating rumours of it reopening unless I planto do it myself! And there's still no news on whether or not Praise will bereborn following the fire which forced it to close. My bet is it'll stay closed andmiserable like The Bar, Bar Bloc and 5th Avenue. Chances are there'll be acouple more venues joining them before the year's out. I'm not usually one tobe so negative but I can't see any solutions to keeping struggling operatorsopen. If anyone reading has, then I'd be keen to hear from you [email protected]

But to end on some good news, The Solstice is running a £2 drinks promotionall day, every day on Fosters, John Smiths, WKD, vodka and Red Bull andglasses of wine. I've never known Peterborough to have so many drink andfood offers! People, where are you?!

BEER FEST TIME AGAIN! Yes it's that time of year again when I get to pinch my nostrils and neck somecloudy pint of real ale named after some dead horse. You've guessed it, I don'tdo real ale very well but I do love the atmosphere at Peterborough Beer Festivaland will be down the Embankment with thousands of others at some pointduring August 25 to 29. More than 350 real ales will be on sale and there'll beover 100 different ciders and plenty of fruit wine options to sample. For timesand admission prices see p.8 of this issue or email [email protected]

SIZE DOESN'TMATTER It's always great when I get to meetcelebrities who turn out to be just as theyare on TV. Ainsley Harriott is one of them.He towered over me like the Honey Monsterand I felt like a sugar puff standing next tohim, which is why I think he offered me achair. The TV chef was at Waterstone's inBridge Street promoting his new book, 'JustFive Ingredients'. Manager Anna Elmore iscurrently working on bringing KeiraKnightley (who cares if she hasn't written abook) to town for me, aren't you Anna.

Peterborough’s number one guy, Aston Merrygoldhas been downing the champagne after hittingthe top of the charts with his band mates fromJLS. The guys told ESP after the news broke –"We’re a boy band who’ve gone straight to No.1.It’s a big statement but that is what we are. Wehave got a few bottles of champagne. We'll wakeup with sore heads but it is well deservedbecause we’ve worked so hard over the last twoyears. It's amazing.

"We want a great album and to tour and havelongevity as an act. We want this to be a career,to have album after album, hit after hit."

It’s hard to believe that just a few days beforestorming the charts with debut hit ‘Beat Again’,Aston, a former Jack Hunt School pupil stillcouldn’t get over the fact he was at his own CDsigning in his home town, so being number onewould certainly have floored him.

ESP caught up with JLS behind the scenes of theQueensgate music store.

Clearly humbled by the sheer number of fanswho’d waited hours and hours to meet him andthe band, Aston looked like he couldn’t quitebelieve any of it.

“I always used to go to HMV and now I’ve comeback as someone in the industry… it’s all a bitcrazy!”

JLS have broken every boy band rule by beinginvolved in every aspect of the creative process asthey put the finishing touches to their debut albumwhich is coming soon, but still the assumption formany is that they’re just another manufactured

group because of their arrival on the scenethrough the TV show.

Aston was keen to put the doubters straight – “Itdoesn’t work like that. When you go into X Factoreveryone would assume you’re a manufacturedband but we were together a year before XFactor, trying hard. We had managers beforethat, other projects, loads of stuff going on butobviously now it has paid off. We’ve gotourselves a fantastic record company andmanagement, they’re supplying us with thegreatest producers in the world and we’re justvery lucky to be here.”

All the guys recognise they’ve been lucky enoughto have such an opportunity – “We have to pinchourselves every day,”Oritsé told us. “We wakeup and we do something we love to do everyday, it doesn’t feel like a job it just feels like fun.”

Laughter broke out when we enquired which onegets the most fan mail with the guys furiouslypointing at Aston (who still looks prettyembarrassed) before Marvin says – “Aston isPeterborough’s prodigal son – he gets the mostfan mail!” Then he added with a grin – “Well, weall get our fair share of attention though I guess!”

While the guys admit they’re not short of femaleattention now, they say finding a ‘special’ ladywon’t be quite so easy. JB admits they weren’texactly ignored at school though – “It wasn’t on aplate or anything but everybody showed a littlebit of love, I was alright at school…”

To the envy of many a girl queuing up outside, ourFace of ESP, Claire Smith, came behind thescenes to sit in on the interview and found theguys friendly as ever – “The boys are just asgenuine in person and real gents and to make afew thousand fans jealous, I even had a coupleof kisses...”

That morning JLS had been live to the nation onRadio One with Chris Moyles, just one of dozensof high profile appearances the boys have beenenjoying.

“Everything’s like a dream, like a whirlwind,”

Marvin told us. “We’ve had an amazing daytoday.”

It was all a bit overwhelming for the fans too, especially 14 year-old Kirstie Shrimplin who’dtravelled down from Co. Durham!

“I got kisses and cuddles off all four of themabout three times over,” Kirstie told ESP. “Astonsaw that I was upset and jumped up and gaveme a kiss and a cuddle straight away!

“I just love them, when they sang during the XFactor they could sing any type of song reallywell. They’re so genuine and down to earth, much nicer than what I had expected, and as forwho's my favourite, I'm afraid boys, it's got to beAston.”

You can see JLS live on tour next February andtickets are on sale now – go towww.espmag.co.uk for details.

Ear splitting screams and hundreds of girls packed into HMV… that’ll mean JLS are back in town! SCREAM – WE’RE NUMBER ONE!

We asked the boys to sign a couple of copies of‘Beat Again’ and a recent issue of ESP and thesecould be yours if you can answer this question.

Q – Which Peterborough school did Aston attend?

Just text or email us your answer along withyour name, address and phone number.

PASTY SHOP OPENS IN TOWN!At last! A new shop has opened in town that doesn’t sell mobile phones! The High Street does seem to be getting overrun with new phone shops.Haven’t people already got plenty of phones? Anyway rant over, I’ve noticeda very cool looking new pasty shop opening on the High Street andchecked out the menu and it looks like there’ll be a good range on offer. Ieven saw a good few vegetarian options up on the board!

MATT SAYS... So what have I been up to this month? I can’t even remember myself! I did go to see my first favourite bandOasis in concert at Wembley and drank so much that I can’t really remember it (damn those free bars!) AlthoughI can remember them being superb!

At least I have a holiday to look forward to this month - the first proper one for about two years I think! Alsolooking forward to playing at The Woodstock festival at the end of July in Poland with Conflict. The festival is thebiggest festival in Europe (probably because it’s free!) But check it out at www.wosp.org.pl/przystanek/2009.

PERFECT TEN

RIVERSIDE FESTIVAL

RIVERSIDE REVIEWIt was a great day down at the Riverside Festival as you’ll see in this month’sPaparazzi. I arrived later than I’d planned as I was still recovering from a superb gig atthe Toreador the night before with the band, plus the ESP girls had taken the wrongturn and were running late… but hey, I’ll let ’em off!

Even so, I still managed to see plenty of the great bands on, including White Cloudsand Gun Fire, Cute Looney and Portman, to name a few! I also appreciated the greatprices on the beer and the choice.

Early indications show the festival broke lots of records for all sorts of reasons –weather, crowd numbers and donations received and although it went brilliantly theorganisers are still predicting the event will have run at a loss! I think the donationbuckets for admission at the gates were a great idea, but I think the festival is still inneed of more sponsors and more backing. So come on, if anyone has any ideas orwould like to stage any events to raise money for next year’s festival give me a shouton [email protected]

THE CORN EXCHANGECELEBRATES It’s a year since The Corn Exchange started its professional programme. The full time theatre programme was launched with professional acts andamateur and community groups performing in the theatre every week.

Theatre manager Judith Mackie told ESP she’s delighted with the progressand popularity of the theatre – "We’re attracting people from all over, ourautumn programme includes Elkie Brooks, Journey South, Cara Dillonand Beverley Craven. We have some fantastic big production showscoming in starting with 'Pop Goes the Eighties' in September, consisting of16 West End performers with 24 costume changes! We also have TheHamsters and Black Ram Theatre Company with the classic ‘One Flewover the Cuckoos Nest’ and more to come.”

It’s great to see all their hard work paying off, so if you haven’t dropped byyet don’t leave it too long.

BE ‘WELLY’COOL AT WORKDavina McCall is backing a campaign for us all to doa ‘welly’ good thing and wear our wellies to work onSeptember 18. In aid of Action Medical Research(who fund research into diseases which affect babiesand children) the idea is that we all donate £2 andwear our wellies to work on that Friday. And I for onethink it’s a great idea! I’m sure everyone in the ESPoffice will be up for a giggle (any excuse to dress up– and that’s just the fellas!) and don their best rubberfootwear (steady!) to join in the fun – the onlyproblem is I can foresee some serious cases of‘welly envy’ affecting office bonhomie! SusanSaunders is bound to find the pinkest, sparkliestmost fabulous wellies this side of a Young Farmers’convention at G-A-Y; I can see Claire, our reigning Face of ESP, arriving insomething super stylish like Ugg wellies or cowboy wellies or wedge-heeled wellies (ooh, I’mgetting excited at the thought – maybe I should get into welly design?!); I’ve got a lovely white pairwith yellow and pink flowers on – not especially exciting but they still have splodges ofGlastonbury mud caked on the sole so I figure they’ve earned their place. And as for Pep – I’m notquite sure what kind of wellies our very own Man About Town will favour but I’m willing to bet they’llbe sponsored, have a pocket for alcohol and co-ordinate with his shirt perfectly. I can’t wait! Toregister or for more info, check out www.welliestowork.com.

POPPING THEQUESTION Congratulations to Noel Edmunds who’s justgot married again to his third wife, Liz, at aceremony in the Cotswolds. It’s been widelyreported that the ring was presented in a red‘Deal or No Deal’ box but I’m just wonderingwhat would happen if the Banker offered her‘the swap’?! And did the vicar ask her if shewas ‘ready for the question’ before the ‘Ido’s’? But what I really want to know is if,before the vicar asked her if the marriage was‘Deal or No Deal’, did she find out if theBanker had a better offer?

HER ROYAL HAIRNESSComing hot on the heels of the surprise visit to Peterborough by the King of

Lovable Naff, The Hoff, Peterborough has just played host to real royalty (you

mean the Hoff isn’t?!) when Princess Anne made a whistlestop visit to our city to

open three new state of the art centres. After arriving by helicopter at Hampton

College the Princess, who’s Commandant-in-Chief of St John Ambulance,

officially opened the National Distribution Centre in Bretton. Then, in her role as

Patron of the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB), she

officially opened the new CAB centre in St Marks Street before finally, in her role

as President of Victim Support, travelled to Hampton police station to open the

Cambridgeshire Victim Care Unit. Phew, I didn’t realise she had so many jobs,

no wonder she never has the time to get a new hair-do.

MAGALUF,AMSTERDAM ORPETERBOROUGH?!According to research from Virgin Tra

ins, the current

economic climate has meant that more and more

people are now choosing to stay in the UK for their

hen and stag parties. Credit crunch or no credit

crunch, I never understood that whole – ‘You’re such a

great friend, you really have to come on my hen night.

By the way, it’s five days in Lanzagrotty and you owe

me 500 quid’ – malarkey. It amazes me anyone has

that kind of cash to stump up, let alone anyone paying

for a wedding. And besides, the clue is in the name,

it’s hen or stag NIGHT, not stag ‘string it out for as long

as you can and max out your credit card’ week. So

now that financial pressure has caused a rethink,

apparently the most popular destinations for the so-

called last nights of freedom are now London,

Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Brighton but

surprisingly, no-one quoted Peterborough as their top

party city! I think they’re missing a trick there. Some

30% said they felt the journey is the key to getting into

the party mood as most start the drinking on the way,

so if that’s true why bother getting off the train at all?

How about jumping on the train to Newcastle and then

coming straight back to Peterborough again?! That’s a

round trip of four hours of solid drinking and then it’s

just a short stagger across to the Brewery Tap to carry

the party on with some award winning beer. Follow that

by dragging your comedy L plates over to Pulse 8 or

Liquid to bust some moves on the podium, disgrace

yourself by snogging a minger in Cathedral Square

and top it off with a curry down Lincoln Road. Finish

the night off by crashing out at the Formula One hotel

and I reckon you could do the whole night for about

£50, perfect! Just don’t take the minger back with you

or you could have some serious explaining to do.

FANCY FEET With flip flops coming out of hiding as temperatures hot up, ensure yourfeet are fancy this summer with our guide to the perfect pedicure asrecommended by Chrissie of Christique Nail & Beauty in Deeping...

1) Soak – Start by soaking feet in a bowl of warm water to soften the skin.

2) Scrub – Spend a few minutes massaging a good exfoliator into eachfoot. Pop your feet back into the water and pat dry with a towel. TryFootwork’s Green Tea & Mint Foot Exfoliating Scrub from Avon.

3) Remove hard skin – If your feet aren’t too dry then simply smooth afoot file over your heels, balls of your feet and around the base of your bigtoes. If, however, you really do suffer with dry patches, gently use a graterto remove the hard skin.

4) Massage – Next massage lots of nourishing foot cream all over yourfeet and ankles. Don’t just be swayed by fancy packaging, some of thebest products are the cheapest – try Lidl for some great foot products thatreally work.

5) Cuticle care, cut and file – Always cut nails straight across andsmooth over with a file afterwards. Don’t neglect cuticles either – if dryapply a cuticle oil to nourish.

6) Polish – Use toe separators to space out toes before applying a basecoat - try OPI Base Coat. Next apply two thin coats of nail varnishcarefully, using a cotton bud dipped in remover to fix any mistakes. Forfabulous colours which are hard wearing try OPI Nail Lacquers as usedby Chrissie. Finish with a top coat for extra shine and staying power. Jobdone!

Turning overa new leaf!

Karen has a diploma in nutritional medicine, nutritional therapeutics and homotoxicology; she is a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists and runs her own private practice.

The great British cuppa has been ‘our’ drink for afew centuries now, but with the explosion of coffeeshops around us maybe we Brits are not drinkingas much as we once did.

There are some health benefits to our normalregular tea and maybe not the way my grannyDevine used to make it. It was put on in themorning and reheated until you could stand yourspoon up in it, then some evaporated milk wasthrown in and a few sugars and there you had agran (Annie) Devine tea! Enough to put you off it forlife…

But one tea that’s really having some positivereports is green tea, which is a delicate Chinesetea packed full of antioxidants (chemicals that canprotect your cells). The Chinese have known aboutthe medicinal benefits of green tea since ancienttimes. No other tea appears to be so healthpromoting than this green variety which is due tothe way it’s processed.

Adding this to your daily routine may help insupporting you in more ways than just as a good‘anti ageing’ drink. The health benefits arenumerous and it’s said to be a good source ofprotection for health issues such as -

• Prostate and breast health

• Lung health in smokers (it is stillquestioned why the Japanesehave a high smoking ratebut low lung cancer rates.Could it be because theydrink green tea?)

• Infections

• Immune functions

• Cholesterol…. and much more

It still contains small amounts of caffeine butnowhere near as much as regular tea and coffee soit shouldn’t leave you full of the jitters. It can also bea great way of getting you to reduce the amount oftea and coffee you drink in the day.

So, if you’re a tea and coffee addict, then it’s worthgiving it a try. I thought I’d come across a few teaaddicts in my time but (mentioning no names here)someone told me he drinks 20-25 cups of regulartea per day with added sugar!!!

Confessions...Susan Saunders

Maybe the next mountain would be better. First two hours, so farso good. After reaching the peak at Scafell the four thousandlitres of water I’d consumed made me need the ladies (side ofthe mountain) AGAIN! The guys waited as I ran off in the dark.Almost there now and… woooooaaahh! My big, un-mountainworthy derriere was falling fast as I slipped over on somethingsquidgee. It had been raining after all so the grass was wet.

No such luck – it was bl**dy sheep pooh. The samesheep I’d been saying hello to on the way up themountain. Marvellous.

The third mountain, Ben Nevis, went prettywell and my team (The A Team) workedvery well together. A lovely leisurely stroll offour hours to the summit (pant, pant, wheeze, wheeeeeeeze!) me relying onthem to pick me up after twenty girlywhimpers of – “Please help me, I’m inpain!” – and them relying on me to singthem some tune to pick them up, or tospeed them up if they didn’t want to hear mesing ONE MORE TIME! We reached the top inone piece and there was snow! I didn’t fall over, which was a nice surprise. I did however, feel like

my fingers would drop off, victims to Mr Frostbite, inside my trendy black leather gloves that matchedmy pink jacket… Brilliant. I did however manage tohurtle down and finish 1st, which I was so happyabout!

This year for my birthday I don’t think I’ll getunmistakably drunk and stumble around in highheels, not I. For I have climbed a mountain andrealised that whilst a birthday can be very muchmy day, sometimes a sense of achievementmeans far more. This lesson, I managed to learnas I stumbled down the mountain, grazed mylegs, slipped in sheep pooh, lost my dignity andbared my slightly oversized derriere to themountain and my unsuspecting team mates.

Susan’s disclaimer

I’d like to say well-done to everyone who took part inthe BGL Three Peaks Challenge and a HUGE BIGTHANK YOU to The A Team – John, John, Dave,Dave, Ian, Toby, Turtle, Matt and Paul and toeveryone who sponsored us. Seriously amazing. There’s still chance to sponsor us onwww.justgiving.com/bgl3peaks

When you think of birthdays, you perhaps also think of parties, alcohol and mates to go hand in hand with your birthdayfestivities. Fun, relaxation and frivolities are normal… but are pain,18 hours of exercise and sheep?

Wanting to achieve something big before my next birthday, Ithought it would be a good idea to do something momentous. The pledge I set myself was to do, what I thought was, a spotof walking in the beautiful countryside by undertaking thecharity Three Peaks Challenge. My expectations weren’twrong, there was just a spot of walking… sandwichedbetween hours of Ray Mears’ worthy trekking, mountainclimbing, muscle-straining, hole-in-your-head ‘fun’.

Anyway, on what should’ve been my birthdaycelebration (the weekend before my birthday) withplenty of drinks and banter from friends, I was climbingMount Everest… well OK, Snowdon (Wales), ScafellPike (England) and Ben Nevis (Scotland) in just over aday.

As my training regime had failed miserably, to try andensure I was prepared for anything (Dib Dab Doband all that, as Tawny Owl taught me in the GirlGuides) I decided to buy myself the ‘best’ kit. So I ofcooooourse had to buy a fab pink waterproofjacket, along with a matching head band. Did Iwant skiing gloves? No thank you – my leatherones go much better! It was my birthday after all– if I was going to face the elements, I wanted tolook good in the process!

So after a 4am start and a five hour mini busjourney, we were at the base of the firstmountain – Snowdon, supposedly theeasiest of the three. After torrential rain, trudging through streams that resembledrivers and nearly being blown off thepeak by a 70mph wind storm I figuredit couldn’t get any worse. That wasuntil I needed to go to the ‘ladies’ onthe side of a mountain. That wasbetter! Now for pulling mywaterproofs back on. Theyweren’t cooperating on accountof my frozen fingers so I hadto pull them off and thencouldn’t get them back onproperly. I had to walk therest of the mountain withmy bottom poking outof the top of them.Brilliant. Just brilliant.

By 9.30pm on a Friday night most of us are kickingback, enjoying an alcoholic drink or two to welcome inthe weekend. But for those of us crammed into a hotbriefing room at Thorpe Wood police station, the onlydrink we want is cold water. Welcome to the night shiftbriefing, ahead of a summer night on the beat inPeterborough city centre.

These guys (and girls) usually have more thanenough to look forward to ensuring revellers out for agood night on the town aren’t troubled by those with abad attitude or who’ve downed a few shots too many.Tonight though, is a bit different.

Operation Bradford means visits to city centre clubsand bars looking for anyone with drugs. By the timewe’ve reached our first port of call, the heavens have

opened. This means a warm welcome from theoutdoor smokers for Star, the black Labrador onsniffing duty tonight, and the uniformed officers whofollow him in, ready to carry out searches of anyonesuspected of carrying drugs.

There’s a keen interest in Star, who gently pokes hisnose around each punter before moving on. Insteadof being seen as a threat, most people welcome hisnovelty value.

Three members of the team are on undercover‘spotting’ duty, heading into each venue first to lookfor any potential suspects and those making a quickdart for the door. They just blend into the crowd, goingabout their business without even making eye contactwith their uniformed colleagues.

Whether it’s snow, charlie, hash, skunk or toomuch booze it can be a recipe for trouble.ESP’s Mark Shaw takes a trip on the night shiftwith officers safeguarding our nights out…

SNOW PATROL- meet the group keeping city nightlife drug free

As the uniform team follow Star and hishandler into each pub, few drinkers bother tolook too far from their glasses. The officers dohave to run the gauntlet of those withsomething to hide or who are picked out for asearch they don’t want, but most peopleappreciate their efforts in trying to dosomething positive. Although it’s not alwaysthat easy as Sergeant James Sheffield, theman in charge of the operation, explained.

“In this kind of operation my job is to speak tothe pub owners and explain what we’redoing. All of them came up to me to thank meafterwards and said we’re welcome to comeas often as we want.

“Very occasionally you get difficulties withpunters, but that’s quite often fuelled by drink. We just have to calm people down and tellthem we’re doing the job that most peoplewant us to do.”

For the unit of 15 officers, Operation Bradfordhas provided the opportunity to do somethingdifferent. None of this is possible without the‘specials’, who put the hours in without payand on top of their own jobs. Tonight theymake up more than half of the team.

Sergeant Sheffield knows their importance -“The specials are an invaluable resource. Ican’t emphasise how useful they are, operations like this would not be able to goahead without them,” he said.

One of the specials on duty is Dan Low, by daya supervisor at Tesco.

“Whenever I have some free time I always tryand put some hours in as I want to become apolice officer,” the 21 year-old told me.

“Doing this kind of shift puts the nightlife intoa different perspective. You get to see theother side of it. It’s a real eye-opener!”

Six bars, quite a few hours and a number ofdiversions later, the operation ends with somesuccess. For ‘spotter’ PC Jemma Cooper, it’s anight to remember as it’s her debut in plainclothes.

“It’s the variety, which is why I love this job,”she revealed afterwards.

“It’s good to see a different side to the cityand know we’re making a difference to theplace where we live and work. It’s a goodthing to re-assure the public we’re doingsomething about drugs.”

WE’VEGONE TOTHE DOGSIt’s always a good night atPeterborough Greyhound Stadiumbut on a hot summer evening thedogs were given a night off whilelocal people hit the track… in err…dog suits…

The Human Greyhound Race, supported by ESP, helped raise over£3,000 for Sue Ryder Care and it wasa howl!

Employees from Stanground FireStation, Bookers, Identity andPassport Services, Heart FM and agroup of mates who got together tocompete, bravely completed half alap of the track dressed in dogcostumes while punters placed theirbets. In the end it was congratulationsto Nick Jackson from Heart FM whoreally did ‘give it some heart’ andpounded his way to a clear win andbecame top dog of the event!

“I really enjoyed running it, but to bein a dog suit on the hottest day of theyear so far wasn’t much fun! Thefinal was just after my heat so I hadto lay down and throw a few bottlesof water over me afterwards, but itwas worth it to be crowned thefastest human dog of 2009!”

The ESP Paparazzi crew saw MikeHarris behind the lens while Alannah,Nicole and Becca mingled with thecrowds as they cheered on thewinners.

The blonde 27 year-old beauty who hailsfrom London has the world at her feetright now. TV and radio presenter FearneCotton is about to permanently presentBBC Radio 1’s mid-morning programme, taking over from long-time host Jo Whileynext month.

But how did the rock chick get to this? Can you believe Fearne actually startedher career at the tender age of 15presenting GMTV’s early morningchildren’s programme The Disney Cluband then later Diggit after she wasdiscovered during a nationwide talentsearch.

Since then she’s worked her way upthrough the ranks of CBBC to hugemainstream TV shows like ‘Top of thePops’ as well as presenting everythingfrom ‘Celebrity Love Island’ and the ‘XFactor’ ITV2 spin-off ‘Xtra Factor’ to beingbackstage at ‘The Brits’,’ Live 8’ andhosting ‘Children in Need’. This lady hastruly made TV her home.

Not to forget Fearne’s charity work; notonly did she present several strandsthroughout Red Nose Day in 2009 butclimbed Mount Kilimanjaro along with ateam of celebs raising a whopping £3.3million.

In 2005 Fearne turned to radio and joinedthe Radio 1 team and in 2007 becamethe first ever female presenter topermanently present the Chart Show.Radio 1 has now announced that thebubbly Londoner will take over from JoWhiley on the mid-morning show 10am -12.45pm, as part of a major shake up ofthe station’s weekday schedule. ‘The LiveLounge’, made famous under Jo Whiley’sguidance, continues in Fearne’s newshow, bringing more live music than everto the daytime. Current early breakfastpresenter Greg James will be replacingEdith Bowman in the afternoon slot, adding games and gaming to the existingmovie-related show.

But how does Fearne feel about this hugemove? “I love being at Radio 1 andtaking on a weekday show is a dreamcome true. Jo is leaving very big shoesfor me to fill and it’s nerve wracking.” Johas made a big impact so replacing heras she moves on to take up the weekendafternoon shows must surely bedaunting? “Jo has been a massiveinspiration to me throughout my career,”adds Fearne “so I have a high standardto live up to. The live music legacy willlive on in the new show and I can’t waitto get started.”

Everyone of course sings Fearne’spraises, Ben Cooper Deputy Controller atRadio 1 says - “This is our first big shake-up of the weekday schedule for over fiveyears. Bringing Fearne to the daytimeschedule is really thrilling for us as shehas proven herself to be a greatbroadcaster in the time she has been atthe station.”

But how does Jo Whiley feel about herreplacement? “After eight wonderfulyears the time has come to move on andgive someone else the privilege ofentertaining the nation on a daily basis. Ithink Fearne is fantastic and I couldn’tleave the show in a better pair of hands.”

Fearne Cotton regularly appears in ‘bestdressed’ lists alongside her best pal andfellow presenter Holly Willoughby, due toher quirky rock chick style. Not only is shebecoming one of radio’s leading ladiesbut she is designing her own line ofclothes. RAMBLEWOOD INNOrton Longueville. Tel: 01733 391111

I never did quite understand why a rapper would wantto call himself ‘50 Cent’ – surely it’s better to be a fulldollar – but 50 PER CENT off at the Orton’sRamblewood Inn (courtesy of ESP’s on-line voucherat www.espmag.co.uk) is well worth rapping onabout.

Needing a quick plateful meant that we took a tripdown the road to this pub in the fantastic grounds ofOrton Hall Hotel. All we needed to do was spend aminimum of 25 quid on food and the bill would behalved!

There’s a decent choice of traditional English, alongwith some continental variations, such as pasta, butwe both opted for good ‘ol steak and ale pie with newpotatoes and veg, after a shared starter of hot ‘n’garlicky bread. This pie oozes melt-in-your-mouthbeef in a tasty gravy every time (yes, I’ve tried itbefore) and after that, we need to halve the dessertas well. Jam sponge and custard – mmm!

Compliment all that with a pint or two from the decentreal ale selection and some great rosé wine – whatmore could you ask for?

For fire safety advice call FREE on

0800 328 9208

www.espmag.co .uk ( August )40

What’s the biggest misconception aboutfirefighters? “That we sit around waiting for callsdrinking tea – we’re flat out!” So says firefighterFarsh Raoufi from Dogsthorpe fire station.

More than 3,500 calls are attended by Dogsthorpecrews each year ranging from horrific car accidentsto birds stuck behind fireplaces! In between thatthere are school talks, community work, training, preventing suicide attempts and, of course, battlingfires.

Farsh and his team on Red Watch are a close knitbunch, enjoying a laugh in between dealing withincidents of every description that can stretch thenerves of any of them. During his 19 years ofservice Farsh has seen it all, but one of the mostfrustrating things is when he knows it could’vebeen easily prevented.

“So many incidents could be avoided if peoplejust thought a little more and followed safetyadvice.” A prime example is wheelie bin fires – theymay sound like a joke and hardly top of the major

incidents list, but when they’re left out, up close tothe front of houses they’re an easy target. All toosoon that bin fire can set a house ablaze with asmoke logged bedroom and a family potentiallylosing their lives… makes you think doesn’t it?

Rubbish is a problem for all of us, but for Farsh andthe firefighters in Peterborough it’s a big problem.Dumped rubbish, by people or companies is adream for fire bugs, so if you spot any tell thecouncil so it can be cleared away and you’ll bedoing everyone a favour. Apart from the potential ofany fire becoming more serious (even if it did juststart in a manky mattress!) every time a fireengine’s called out it costs us all dosh, whilethey’re putting out a bin fire they could be neededat something more important, plus any fire damagejust looks bad and the city’s image takes an instantdip.

“You just need to report any fly tipping so it can bemoved and stick your wheelie bin out of sight –it’s easy really,” says Farsh. “You’ve got to

remember that your rubbish is an arsonist’s fueland it’s a pretty pathetic reason for someone tolose their life.”

Farsh has attended plenty of near misses wherethey’ve stopped buildings going up in smoke afterpiles of dumped waste have been set alight, buthe’s also seen his fair share of incidents that havebecome far more serious.

“The most memorable things that stick in my mindaren’t the worst incidents but the personaltouches – the ‘Thank you’ you get when you’vemade a difference or saved a life. I just wish theyweren’t put in that position in the first place.”

So give Farsh and the firefighters a break, don’t belazy – stick your wheelie bin out of harm’s way. After all, if we help cut down on rubbish fires hemight get time to slurp some of that tea everyonethinks he’s drinking!

Fire fighting? Whata load of rubbish!

In September the salon at Hampton will be transformed with the arrival of threestand-up Aurora tanning booths for quick tanning sessions and a Zenith sunbed.

“I have great plans for the salon, it will look fantastic,” owner Ben Nguyen toldESP. “There’ll be a new juice bar, lots of greenery, and sun cream on sale andbecause we have such a high ceiling the tanning area won’t be humid which is aproblem in many tanning salons.”

The Sun Kissed Tanning Studio sunbeds will all comply with the new maximumirradiance level of 0.3W/m² for safety and be housed in a separate area of theScarlet unit at Serpentine Green.

Our lucky Face of ESP, Claire Smith, won £500 to spend at Scarlet Nail Studio andis also looking forward to staying glowing and gorgeous as autumn approaches.

“Having Scarlet Nails in Hampton as a prize giver was a real treat and has meantI can literally pop up the road for the a quick manicure and pedicure!

“Now that the sunbeds are coming in September, as we haven't had much of asummer and my holiday feels like it was a long time ago, it’ll definitely be the rayof sunshine we've all needed!”

The fabulous range of nail treatments remains though, with nail art and extensionstheir speciality. Claire enjoyed a fantastic pedicure and chilled out during thetreatment in their relaxing massage chair. Whether you want a standard Frenchmanicure through to glamorous nail jewellery or artistic designs to match aparticular theme they can come up with whatever you fancy!

There’ll be no need to worry about your nails discolouring when you hop on thesunbed either, as Ben promises there’ll be protective treatments available. So thisSeptember you’ll be looking truly glam from tip to toe.

CLAIRE GETS SOME COLOUR AT SCARLET

Page 43: ESP August 2009
Page 44: ESP August 2009

Having owned a Fiestayears and years ago Icouldn’t resist taking thenew model for a spin forESP, and in this hot magentacolour I certainly got noticed.Wow, how they’ve changed over the years – and Idon’t just mean in the funky range of colourswhich really make the new models stand out. Iwas amazed it actually felt like a much bigger carwith loads of space and dare I say it, a sporty feel.I know this particular colour is more girlie but don’tworry boys, Jeremy Clarkson put a funky greenone through its paces on Top Gear and I dobelieve he stormed a beach with a bunch ofsoldiers, so you can still get the butch factor out ofthe new Fiesta! If you want to show someindividuality and colour’s your thing there arecertainly some fresh exteriors in this range, butme, I just prefer the plain white one.

The Ford Fiesta Zetec has all the mod cons we’reso used to today like Bluetooth, air con andcontrols for the radio/MP3 on the steering wheel. At night we loved the ambient glow of red light on

the roof, glove box and centre console. It has sucha neat and funky body shape, halogen headlights, boasts power operated door mirrors (selectedmodels only) and as standard it has caplessrefuelling. That means no more dirty hands at thepumps girls, plus you can’t accidentally fill it upwith the wrong fuel… not that we’d do that ofcourse!

During development the new Fiesta was certainlyput through its paces – it was driven the equivalentof 87 times around the globe and exposed toextreme temperature over and over again – so it’sfair to say it should be pretty reliable.

You can grab the new Fiesta from as little as£10,595 on the road but the model we had startsfrom £12,895. If you’ve already got a car and wantto get yourself a new nippy little number, it’s worthtalking to the guys at TC Harrison in Peterboroughabout the scrappage allowance in time for a new59 plate in September.

Not only was I impressed with this little gem butthe editor ran off with it to take Claire - our Face ofESP - for a spin, and for once it wasn’t just Claireattracting the glances as she competed with thishot magenta model.

As we celebrate our ten years inbusiness we’re also celebrating tenlocal success stories. This month,ESP’s Rebecca Jane talks tonumber eight in our series, TVpresenter Sarah Cawood…Sarah Cawood is in a car on the AI heading northfrom London. Today she’s heading to Luton airport togo on holiday, but it’s a stretch of road she knowsreally well because it’s the start of another journeyshe often takes – away from her hectic working life inthe capital back to her hometown of Stamford.

Originally Sarah’s family moved to Castor when she was about four and then toMaxey before sending her to Stamford School for Girls. Despite her careertaking her to London she’s regularly back for shopping trips in Peterboroughand to dine out in Stamford.

So why did you move away when you were 17? Was it to get your career going?

“I left to go to the Royal Ballet School in London, where I trained for threeyears before I started dancing for a living. Then I got into television. I only livein London now out of professional necessity, if I didn’t have to then I’d live inthe area – ideally Stamford or in the adjoining villages because they’re all sopretty.”

You’ve presented a huge variety of different TV shows – ladette culture inThe Girlie Show; being a roving reporter for Richard and Judy;children’s shows such as Live and Kicking; guest slots on Big Brother’sLittle Brother; and the winner of Celebrity Weakest Link 2007. Doesbeing so versatile help you to get work?

“No, I think that’s a real problem. They want to be able to box you into a niche. The ‘daytime’ people think I’m a bit too ‘evening entertainment’. If you’re TessDaly you do family shows, but you’d never see her do a late night edgy showlike I did The Girlie Show. Being versatile can be an albatross to be honest. It’sfamously hard for children’s presenter’s to get out of children’s telly. I’veyo-yo’d from children’s TV to The Girlie Show back to Live and Kickingfor children. I got lucky I guess!”

Didn’t presenting The Girlie Show get you a rep as a ladette?

“I hated it! You ask anyone I went to Stamford School with andthey’ll say I was a bit of a swot! I got my homework in on time andI was always well turned out. I so wasn’t the rebel that I wasportrayed to be!”

I saw you at Mama Liz’s a few months ago watchinga band…

“Oh it’s great there, my best friend, who I’m going on holidaywith, well herhusband putsbands onthere.”

... Next month we catch up with another local success story.

PERFECT TEN … SUCCESS STORIESWhere are your favourite local places?

“Mama Liz’s of course… There’s a great Mexican restaurant in Peterborough, but I’ve forgotten its name… and The Burghley in Stamford tends to be a localfor us. For rural areas… the second meadow in Stamford and also SoutheyWoods is really pretty. I went to Stamford Fair in March with my dad, and thatwas lovely.”

They say there’s no place like home, but for you which place is the mostsimilar to home?

“You know what? Crouch End, where I live in London. I love it there. It’s like asmall town and I’ve carved a little life for myself there that mirrors my life inStamford. I know my dry cleaner’s name and I know all my neighbours. I think itwas subconscious but deliberate.”

Who’s the sexiest male presenter that you’ve worked with? Is it Eamon Holmes?

“Ha ha, he does have a certain something! Everyone would say Steve Jones ¬–but I don’t think he is. He’s got too many teeth! I have to say… I did love Eamon,he is such a funny man. Yeah, let’s go with Eamon: the thinking woman’scrumpet! But my guilty pleasure, and I’ve never worked with him but I have thereal, real hots for him, is Alan Hansen the Scottish guy that does Match of theDay. Ah man… he’s so fit!”

If you could steal a TV show from another presenter and host it yourselfwhich show would it be?

“I’d like Loose Women and because I was a dancer I’d do Strictly ComeDancing. And I’d do it better than Tess Daly! Why? Because I haven’t got theaccent for a start! But I know about dancing. I think when you have authorityover your subject matter you always do a better job. A lot of those prime timejobs are just in front of an autocue so they’re not really that taxing, but if youwant a really taxing job it would be to do what Kate Humble does. I think she’san awesome TV presenter, no way is that autocued, she’s thinking on her feet.”

If you were going for a gals night out in Stamford, where?

“The Raj for an Indian.”

… and for a romantic night with a man?

“Oooh, The George, I love The George, I want to get married there!”

Do you have a suitable candidate?

“Hmmm, he hasn’t arrived yet, he’s stuck in trafficon his white charger!”

How busy are you in the next couple ofmonths?

“I’m filming a travel show. We’ve just shotin London and the next one in Alsace inFrance. August is quiet, hence theholiday. And hopefully I’m setting up aproduction company with a friend ofmine so I will start making

programmes as well as frontingthem.”

Tarantino does the Second World War in this unashamedly blood-splattering fiction of a different kind.

QT’s long-mooted war project finally sees the light of day, with theinjection of A-lister Brad Pitt undoubtedly hoping to give him his firsttruly commercial box-office success since ‘Pulp Fiction’ (which is in mytop three favourite movies of all-time).

In this tale of Jewish retribution, Pitt’s Lt. Aldo Raine leads a group ofmercenaries – including Tarantino’s director pal Eli Roth (‘Hostel’) andDiane Kruger (‘National Treasure’) – known to their enemy as ‘TheBasterds’, in violently ruthless attacks on German targets in Nazi-occupied France.

After generally favourable, if unspectacular, reviews from the CannesFestival screening, hinting at a movie that’s equally talky as it is action-laden, it remains to be seen if one of Hollywood’s mosthighly-regarded directors will put the financial misfire ‘Deathproof’behind him, or whether this is one pet project too many…

Game On

ONLINE REVIEWS THIS MONTH: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (WII), Wii Sports Resort (WII), Point Lookout (X360)

Thanks to Ian Hilling for playtesting Fight Night Round 4.

THE CONDUIT: SPECIAL EDITION(PS3)Out NowAs one of the very few first-person shooter exclusives, this has been taggedas the game to take the revolutionary console to the next level.

This much-hyped game (in a nicely-presented Special Edition pack) gets thebasics spot-on, with fantastic controls and arguably the best graphics seenon the Wii so far.

With a tidy, if linear and intermittently dull, single-player campaign, you star ina predictably clichéd story as a trigger-happy, alien-hating, secret serviceagent – but it’s the well-rounded multiplayer game (which utilises Wii Speak)that takes Sega/High Voltage’s FPS to the next level.

It won’t beat the likes of the excellent ‘Metroid Prime: Corruption’ – and if youhave a X360 or PS3 it won’t worry the likes of ‘COD’, ‘Halo’ and ‘Bioshock’ –but this impressive effort, despite a few teething problems, is arguably thebest pure shooter on Nintendo’s console.

LET’S TAP (WII)Out NowWith the MotionPlus getting so much attention, onenew control system that has slipped in under theradar is a worthwhile addition to the Wii party scene.

This aesthetically pleasing – if initially bizarre-sounding – control mechanism of two boxes thatregister the strength of your Wii remote-tappingactually works extremely well throughout intriguingmini-games.

The selection of games, which includes puzzle, rhythm, running and 2D scrolling shooter, aregenerally hit and miss, but due to its quirky nature itwould be a noteworthy addition to anyone’smultiplayer collection.

‘Let’s Tap’ is noticeably a little on the thin side, but ataround 20 quid it’s worth giving the gamingequivalent of Fred Astaire a go.

INDIANA JONES &THE STAFF OF KINGS (WII/PSP/DS/PS2)Out NowThis is one of those games where you put a bunch ofniggling problems aside, simply because it’s Indy.

Fanboy feedback for Indiana Jones’ latest adventure, which takes him to multiple world locales in search ofthe mythical Staff of Moses, has been far moreforgiving for this title which also boasts the die-hardfavourite ‘The Fate of Atlantis’.

Yes, the graphics are only PS2 standard, yes, theoverused whip-cracking controls are frustratingly hit-and-miss, and yes, the co-op and multiplayer modesare crap – but the variety of the level designs andwealth of unlockables just about pulls it through.

Factor in the obvious dosage of Indy nostalgia andfans should lap this up.

ONLINEREVIEWS For the latest movie, DVD andgame reviews from ESP, visit:www.espmag.co.uk/reviews

Special

FIGHT NIGHTROUND 4 (X360/PS3)Out NowYou’ve read about the ultimate golfinggame – well the ‘Fight Night’ franchise hasjust done the same for boxing.

This needs very little explanation as this isthe best boxing experience ever, bar none.Nothing even comes close.

With jaw-dropping (or is that breaking?)graphics which shows every sweat-flyingand cut-opening reaction to the faces ofsome of the greatest fighters of all timeacross all weight classes – Ali, Tyson,Frazier, Lewis, Hagler, Calzaghe, Hattonand Jones Jnr are all included – this is anigh-on flawless arcade representation ofthe sport.

If you’re ultra-picky ‘Fight Night 3’ fans maypick out a differing control system (whichworks great if you weren’t used to the

previous game) and Legacy Modeinaccuracies, but with great pacing andgaming mechanics, sublime slow motionand a fantastic create-a-boxer mode, this isa first class effort from top-to-bottom.

Five star reviews are hard to come by onthese pages, and as it doesn’t get theannual ‘cash cow’ treatment, in comparisonto football, golf, tennis and wrestlinggames, it delivers a stand-out knockoutblow that is simply champion.

TIGER WOODS PGATOUR 10 (WII/X360/PS3/PSP)Out NowWhat do you get when you combine the new WiiMotionPlus with golf’s most famous player? Arguably thegreatest golfing game of all-time. Nintendo’s new controlsystem gets you as close as possible to a true-to-life golfswing with precise draw and fade capabilities, along with amuch-improved putting system. With a plethora of world-renowned courses, dynamic weather conditions and onlinetournaments, you can play as Tiger or other top golfingnames. The X360/PS3 versions vastly improve on the Wii’sjagged up-close visuals (that should really be better), butall formats (including the PSP incarnation) have movedsignificantly in the right direction, despite still having somecrowd atmosphere issues. But for me the immersiveMotionPlus controls give Nintendo’s version the allimportant edge over its graphically-enhanced counterparts– and takes the franchise from a par to a birdie.

ONLY FOOLS & ZOMBIESLast summer I got to meet film director John Landis who in the80’s directed some of my favourite films – ‘Animal House’, ‘TheBlues Brothers’, ‘American Werewolf in London’, ‘TradingPlaces’, ‘The Three Amigos’ and ‘Coming to America’. He’sbeen back in the news recently as he was also the director ofMichael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ video. Since the ‘King of PlasticSurgery’ passed away, the video’s been on non-stop on themusic channels and Landis tells a great story about how the13 minute video was the first to get a big Hollywood moviepremiere -

"Everyone was there from Marlon Brando to Diana Ross andit got a standing ovation. People were yelling 'encore, encore' and I said 'Sorry there’s no encore!' Then EddieMurphy got up and shouted – ‘Show the goddamn thingagain!’ So they sat there and watched Thriller again.”

MONKEYING AROUNDWITH JACKOThe death of Michael Jackson has dominated theheadlines. Some have celebrated his life withcandelit vigils, others by texting hundreds of jokesto their mates. Me? I sent an email to PG Tips.

Dear Mr Tips

Following the death of the King of Pop, surely thetime is right for his pet monkey, Bubbles to appearin an ad. I’ve re-written the lyrics of ‘Beat It’ to suitthe occasion which I’m sure a Jacko sound-a-likecould record. Maybe you could give Lenny Henry acall, we’re so bored of all those Premier Inncommercials. Anyway, here are the new lyrics. Letme know what you think…

When doctors told you that your owner had diedEven though you are a monkey I bet you criedSo have a sit down, flick the kettle switch onAnd heat it, just heat itYou better drink you better drink what you can

Don’t wanna see no bananas, don’t be an orang-utanYou wanna cuppa tea, better getta brew onSo heat it, cos you gonna feel sad(Chorus)Just heat it, heat it, heat it, heat itA cuppa tea picks you up when you’re grievin’Just add some milk and sugar to your brewIt doesn’t matter if it’s one lump or twoJust heat it….etc etc

Yours sincerely S Gonzalez

THATMITCHELL &WEBB SKETCHIn the latest series of their sketchshow, David and Robert were sittingbackstage discussing the runningorder of the show -

"So I thought we'd go with hit, miss, hit, miss, hit, miss, hit, miss," saysDavid, pointing out that all sketchshows invariably follow this formula. When Robert queries this Davidreplies: "Look, if we didn't perverselyinclude about 50% deliberatelyunamusing material people wouldhave to think of something else tosay wouldn't they?"

"Like we're too self-referential," saysRobert.

"Ah, clever."

"And people call us smug," Robertsays smugly.

In another, a man played by DavidMitchell is trying to cook a meal for hisdate and is visited by a vision of TVchef Gary Rhodes – played by RobertWebb with a foot-high spiky quiff. "Sois that what Gary Rhodes looks like?"says Mitchell unimpressed.

"No" smiles the vision, "but this is thebest version of me that yourimagination could piece together."

OI BRUCE OVER HERE – ANDY'S GOT YOU A BEER !As everyone knows one of the best things about Peterborough is that you're only an hour away from Londonby train, so last month myself and ESP’s music writer Andy Slater went to see Bruce Springsteen play inHyde Park.

From the opening cover version of 'London Calling' to the last song of the night 'Dancing in the Dark’ thecharismatic old rocker kept the crowd of 55,000 entertained for over 3 hours... but that's enough about Andyjuggling beer bottles and 'liberating' promotional posters from fences, 'The Boss' wasn't bad either.

JOKESOFTHEMONTH"I think there's something wrong with putting a roof on Wimbledon for thetennis, you're tampering with the very fabric of a national institution – that itrains at Wimbledon. It's like putting doors on Stonehenge. It's wrong. What I'dlike to see next year is that as the roof closes, the ground opens up and thecrowd fall in." – Sean Lock

After a bit of travelling around of late, this month’s column will have a morelocal flavour to it, as two of the annualfavourites take place in August, one ofthem with a big headline act.

The team behind Randall Rootz(August 14 – 16) have pulled a realiron out the fire by getting The NewBeautiful South to headline on theFriday night. A band that has sold 15million albums playing the BreweryTap has got to be a good thing andthe band is looking forward to it.

“We’ve passed throughPeterborough before but we neverplayed, it‘s our first time. It’s alwaysgood to play somewhere new,”singer Dave Hemingway told ESP. Farfrom being a big stadium gig like theyused to play in the 90s Dave is acutelyaware of the benefits of a more

intimate venue – “I like theatmosphere in them… as long aspeople aren’t chucking things at us!”Dave, this is Peterborough, we are fartoo refined for that.

Talking to the guys it’s clear that someof the older songs didn’t quite workwith the new line-up but those luckyenough to have tickets should hearmost of the classic hits as well as afew new tunes – “There’ll still beplenty of the songs to sing along toand we’ll be enjoying ourselves asmuch as you.” It bodes well for thefestival.

On the Saturday and Sunday over atCharters you have a massive amountof music to choose from, and it’s allfree. Pick of the bands for me areKissmet who play a very rare city gigand will be on about 9pm onSaturday. They are now regarded asone of the best festival circuit bandswith their fusion of reggae / banghra /rock. If ever there was a band for abalmy summer night and the skyabove your head, this is it. A festivalband personified. Another good call, and a reason to be there at midday onSaturday (it’s the music I’m going for,not the beer, honest love…) isSaturday openers Opaque. A happy, intelligent, free-spirited way to rock thefestival off to a flyer, Mooney and theboys will set the standard for theothers to follow.

Take your pick then from ChrisWatson, The Malingerers, The StolenGnomes and our very own AndyWhittaker-fronted Motor City Vipers(think Pot Noodle advert in the gym). They’re all worth a trip to see on theirown, never mind as a collective. Dothe whole weekend, you know itmakes sense and you’ll be raisingmoney for Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hallso feel good about yourself too.

ESP is supporting Randall Rootz asone of our ‘Perfect Ten’ events thisyear as we celebrate ten years inbusiness by backing, or staging, anumber of local events, so we’ll seeyou there with our cameras!www.randallrootz.org.

Another local treasure thismonth is the Thorney Livemusic event, now in its 14thyear! Based in the grounds ofBedford Hall this charity fundraiser has eight bands and abar, what else is there?!

Musically you haveBrotherhoods Roundabout(led by everyone’s favouriteplumber, Smithy), The MightyQuinn, Simon Russell, Faze 4,the Big Grin, Irene’s Secret(sounds like a lingeriecollection)The Overdubs andThe Motor City Vipers.

It’s only a fiver to get in andunder 16’s go free so it’s a great family day out as well. It’s onAugust 30, bank holiday Sunday as well, so no work the nextday… lie in! Gates open at 11.30amwww.thorneylivemusic.co.uk.

The other big festival round and about is Summer Sundae atLeicester’s De Montfort Hall on August 14 - 16. Headlined byThe Streets, The Charlatans, Idlewild and The Zutons itpromises to be a cracking weekend. Also playing are The Beat,St Ettiene and The Lightning Seeds and with England hopefullyregaining the Ashes by then ‘three lions on the chest’ should beringing out all over the place. See www.summersundae.comfor the last remaining tickets.

Finally though I can’t miss the chance to comment on a greatweekend I drank away at the end of June in London. Firstly NeilYoung, Hyde Park with Liv and Tracy on the Saturday. Absolutelyawesome, he’s an icon of cool, 62 years old strutting andsnarling through his repertoire like a 18 year-old. The gig wasthe best this year by far. It’s the second time I’ve seen him andboth times I’ve been blown away, should you ever get thechance to see him you should, just to say you’ve been.

Then on the Sunday I went back down again with fellow ESPcolumnist Steve ‘not so funny’ Gonzales to watch The Boss,Bruce Springsteen. He too was amazing, another geezer ofadvanced years he wowed the crowd for three hours. He wasthat good I swiped a Bruce banner off the fence 12’ x 6’ …don’tknow what the hell to do with it but hey ho… good idea at thetime. Anyway Steve, sorry to say, Bruce is The Boss but NeilYoung is a god. ‘keep on rockin’ in a free world; Steve… keepon rockin’!

THE MALINGERERSThere are several bands around that claim to beunique, but few can be more unique than TheMalingerers, who I caught playing in Stamfordrecently. Featuring several members from the nowdisbanded and much-lamented Surgens, TheMalingerers have been busy writing new materialand welding together a fresh and exciting soundfrom the melting pot of old-time country, blues androck ‘n’ roll. Think twisted harmonies and lyrics, wailing harmonica, country picking, bouncing bassand shuffly snare and you’re about there! Theirperformance was simply astounding and if you wantto catch them soon, there’s no better place than atthe Randall Rootz Festival on August 15 & 16. TheMalingerers play on the Sunday at around 1pm.

Darren Ferguson’s side start life inthe second tier of English footballthis month with a trip to Derby onSaturday August 8, while mouth-watering clashes with the likes ofWest Brom, Nottingham Forest,Newcastle and Middlesbroughbeckon in the months ahead.

The team head into the new seasonon a high after back-to-backpromotions under Ferguson’scharge.

“Everyone’s really excited. We aregoing into the season feelingoptimistic – pre season has beenreally good,” revealed captainRussell Martin.

“Last season we set the target ofpromotion, we haven’t set a targetfor this season yet, although thatcould still happen. Our aim is to

just go and establish ourselves –we don’t want to struggle – and wehave enough ability in the squad todo that.

“Momentum is very important. Itcan take you a lot of places in ashort space of time. So it’s vitallyimportant we maintain themomentum we have.”

There have been a few new arrivalsat London Road during the summer, but for the players the mostimportant thing was keeping their in-demand manager where he was.

“Keeping the manager was thebest bit of business the club hasdone,” Russell told ESP. “It wasmassive news to hear he’d signeda new contract – he has broughtmost of the lads here and has a lotof respect from them all.

“He’s going to be linked with otherclubs just because of the successhe has had here, so him stayinggives us a lot of confidence.”

Russell expects tough tests everyweek, but there appears to be onestand out fixture for the players.“Newcastle is the biggest game,”he revealed without any hesitation.

“But every week we’ll be playing amassive club, there are going to beno easy games. They’re all goingto be really tough.

“All of us want to get to the bestlevel we can, and the best way wecan do that is by proving ourselvesagainst the highest level of playerspossible. We all want to play at thetop level. We proved ourselves lastyear and want to do it again.”

The 2008/2009 season is one that surpassed thewildest dreams of all local ice hockey fans withPhantoms winning an unprecedented treble ofLeague, Cup and Play-Offs but anybody whothought the Bretton-based side would be taking abreather in the forthcoming campaign had betterthink again.

As expected, last season's headline grabbingcampaign resulted in a number of big moneycontracts being offered to Phantoms playersresulting in some big-name departures, but forevery quality player lured away from the club, there has been a quality replacement inbound.

Heading the list of summer re-signings wasnetminder Stephen Wall who lived up to hissurname last season and was always the club'stop priority for the new campaign.

On defence, the club lost stalwarts JamesHutchinson and Andy Munroe but have movedswiftly to bring in former Phantom Nick Compton

who, since leaving the club, has been developingstrongly in North American college hockey andAlex Symonds who has Elite League experiencewith Cardiff Devils. Familiar returnees on the blueline will include fan's favourite Dwayne Newmanalong with Julian Smith and Thomas Jeffery.

The early-summer departures of Nathan Rempeland Craig Peacock were significant blows to theclub but fans can look forward to some veryexciting inbound talent headed by highlyregarded and prolific marksman Jason Cassellswho’s joined the club from Elite LeagueEdinburgh Capitals. Joining Jason will be TomCarlon, another highly sought after forward whohas experience at Elite League level. Familiarreturnees to Phantoms forward line will be formerPeterborough Evening Telegraph SportsPersonality of the Year Brent Gough, formerOlympian Maris Ziedins, club captain LewisBuckman, Joe Miller, Shaun Yardley and JamesSpurr.

Further signings are expected between now andthe start of the pre-season campaign in earlySeptember.

Off the ice, the club moved sharply to replacedeparting treble-winning coach Colin Pattersonwith 40 year-old fellow countryman Doug Irwinwho has professional coaching experience inboth North America and Europe.

The 2009/2010 English Premier League seasonwill see the added challenge for Peterborough'sreigning champions of locking horns with formerElite League clubs Manchester Phoenix andBasingstoke Bison, both of whom have chosento drop down from the arena based top flight andwill be viewed by many as the teams to beat inthe new campaign. A tough season ahead butPeterborough Phantoms are shaping up ready todefend their titles and will be in no mood to makelife easy for any of their ambitious rivals!
