Computers Can Conquer Our Lives
1346011 서은지
In all mechanized society, there has been much discussion about dependence on
computers. People debate about whether it is possible to live swimmingly without computers.
Some people say that it is possible to get along without computers, because computers are
only tools. However, if computers don’t exist, most people feel uncomfortable and even the
whole world can’t work properly due to a collapse of network system. In fact, we are overly
dependent on computers.
Firstly, at the personal level, we tend to use computers in most activities which can be
carried out offline. We study, bank, buy something through computers. Moreover, even
though face-to-face communication is preferable to online communication, we tend to keep in
touch with friends via computers because it is convenient. Like this, we want to do any work
through the computer simply because of rapidity and convenience. If computers don’t exist,
we become anxious and experience considerable discomfort.
Secondly, at the social level, our society is overly immersed in the study of the
computer technology and invests a lot of money every year. Korea invested more than 4
trillion won in developing computer technology, even though computers already mechanized
and automatized the tasks which we need. And even, all countries of the world compete with
each other to construct better computer technology. For example, Korea is trying to make the
better artificial intelligence computer than the computer U.S.A. developed. Like this, the
society is excessively dying to get better computer technology.
Some people claim that dependence on computers has not increased, but only the
application range of computers has become wider as technology has developed. However,
this is a short-sighted way of thinking. In a broad point of view, dependence on computers
has increased since computers developed. In fact, the original object of computers was only
calculation, and the word ‘computer’ comes from the Latin ‘computare’ meaning calculation.
However, the use of computers nowadays isn’t limited to calculation, but expands to our
daily life and professional industry. Thus, compared to the early development of computers,
dependence on computers has dramatically increased.
We rely on computers excessively. It is not too much to say that our lives are
‘Computer Lives’. We tend to use computers in every field, and society clings to the
development of computers overly. Therefore, we have to reduce the dependence on
computers.
