October 19th about how we can Serve our neighbors by mentoring
families right here in Boerne. Then Growing Hope begins to serve
our community with a launch event on October 30th. This is a
powerful ministry that will bless our church and community for
years to come. Get involved and be a part of it from the start!
Our church started 90 years ago, and this October 27th we’re
going to celebrate! Pastor Emeritus Henry Schulte will
preach at all three worship services, celebrating both the 502nd
anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation and the 90th anniversary of
St. John Lutheran Church. Then we’ll gather in the Family Life
Center for a birthday meal of traditional German food. It’s a
birthday
party 90 years in the making. You don’t want to miss out!

Picnics and polkas; community outreach and congregational
birthdays…what do these things have in common? The month of
October. This will be a busy, fun month at our church. You don’t
want to miss it!
It starts on October 6th with our annual Church Picnic at the
Miller Ranch. This is one of the events the Waters family looks
forward to year after year, and this year it’s free!—just pick up a
ticket at the church. The picnic is a relaxed event with great
food, leisure for visiting, fun and games…it’s a wonderful time to
Connect with the church. Plan to be a part of it and join in the
fun.
The weekend after that, join us for a Polka Service on October
13th. The Early and Praise Services will be the same that day, but
the Late Service will be completely different. The Boerne Village
Band will lead the Late Service in a Polka Worship, with all of the
hymns and even some of the service music set to polka tunes. We’ll
have a barrel of fun! Come and Worship with us.
The weekend after that we learn how to Serve with Growing Hope.
Growing Hope is St. John’s partnership with Hill Country Daily
Bread. We’ve had a team of people working hard on it for months,
and now they’re ready to introduce this new ministry

Not because you are obligated, or that you can do enough to earn
your way to heaven. We are also not to make a show of all the good
deeds we are doing to gain praise from others like the Pharisees
were admonished for
in Jesus’ day. On the contrary, it seems the point of James’
message is that your deeds will flow out of you because of your
faith and love for God. It’s as if you won’t be able to help
yourself from becoming involved as your faith grows and leads to
action.

This can be a difficult scripture for us to
understand–especially in light of our understanding that we are
“saved by grace through faith.” After all, this is the argument
that kicked off the Reformation. However, it is obvious that
believers are expected to perform deeds that accompany our
faith.

Many years ago, the basketball coach at the University of Utah
told the story of an extremely talented young player. The player
had NBA star potential. But after a year with the Utes, the coach
got a surprise. His star player wanted to go on a church mission
for two years.
The coach had a meeting with the young man and his parents. He
explained that he believed the young man would very likely make a
fortune as a professional, giving him financial freedom for life.
But he would jeopardize that by taking two years completely away
from the game.
The family listened carefully, looked at each other, and then
the father said, “Coach, we understand your assessment. It is very
clear. But what about eternity?”
Eternity is a long time. And our St. John mission deals with it.
We are focused on the eternal salvation of every person on earth.
Which brings me to the St. John Endowment Fund. Like most permanent
endowments, it is intended to last as long as the earth lasts. It
will steadily provide funds for St. John mission work, making Jesus
known to the world. Training pastors, feeding the hungry, spreading
the Gospel, building shelter,
drilling water wells, etc.
Our endowment has a modest start, and it will continue to grow,
bearing more fruit. Future generations, not yet born, will hear the
Gospel because St. John chose to focus on eternity.
We will be hearing more about the St. John Endowment Fund on
November 10th, at all three worship services. Exciting stuff.

The Christian-oriented GriefShare bereavement program, under the
guidance of Pastor Bergquist, continues. Anyone aged 17 and older
mourning the death of a loved one is invited to come at any point
during the 15-week cycle, as each class is a stand-alone unit.

Meeting options are: Tuesdays, 10am-Noon through December 10 and

In Bible class that day Mr. Gary Juhl, Legacy Giving Consultant,
will dispel several myths about estate planning including: “I’m not
wealthy enough to consider planned giving. If I don’t have a will,
my family will be able to figure it out. I’m too young to think
about dying. Our estate plan was completed several years ago. We

Introducing St. John’s new Ministry: Growing HopeWould you like
to make a difference in someone’s life?Is God calling you to reach
out to others in your community?
Operation Christmas Child (OCC)Fulfilling the Great Commission
to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth! What is Operation
Christmas Child (OCC)? OCC’s Mission Statement is: Demonstrate
God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world,
and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good
News of Jesus Christ. Shoeboxes opens doors for presenting the Good
News of Jesus Christ by working in and through local churches where
possible. Shoeboxes are delivered to more than 150 countries and
territories. In addition to giving children a shoebox and sharing
the Gospel, the children receive a colorful booklet that shares
important biblical stories such as creation, sin, the birth of
Jesus, teaching of Jesus, His death, and His resurrection. Many
children are invited back to the local church to participate in a
discipleship program called The Greatest Journey, a 12-lesson,
scripture-based curriculum. The Greatest Journey discipleship
lessons are being taught in over 100 countries and in over 70
languages all over the world.

tournament (cane poles are available or bring your own gear, bait
will be provided) and a dessert bake-off (entries must be turned in

November 3rd is All Saints Sunday this year. As we have done in
the past, we would like to honor your loved one by announcing their
name before the congregation and offering a white flower in their
memory. If you have a loved one who has passed away in the last
year and would like to have him/her recognized in this manner,
please fill out a form in the church office or on our website under
‘Events’.
Please join us for the 90th anniversary celebration of St. John
Lutheran Church. Pastor Emeritus, Henry Schulte, will preach at all
three services and a Congregational Meal of traditional German fare
food prepared by our very own “Grill Guys” will follow the late
service. Be sure to pick up a free meal ticket in the Narthex if
you plan to attend so we can get an accurate head count. Volunteers
