The Year 4 Team

Punctuality and Attendance Good attendance and punctuality is essential for pupils to achieve their full educational potential. It is also vital for pupils to form good habits for later life.

We have staggered start times for every year group. For Year 4, the gates open at 8.45am. We expect children to be in school on time every morning. When they arrive, the class teacher sets Early Bird work for them which gets their brains ticking and sets them off for a good day of learning.

School finishes at 3.00pm for Year 4.

However, please DO NOT send your child into school if they have any of the following symptoms: * high temperature* new, continuous cough * loss or change to their sense of smell or taste

Year 4 Expectations

Year 4 Expectations

A reminder that children need to be wearing their PE kits on the days they have PE. This must be trainers and not plimsolls!

Year 4 have PE every Tuesday and Thursday.

Please make sure all school items are labelled with your child’s name and class. Many of the children have the same jumper and coat and will often take them off and leave them in the playground. This will help in returning them to the correct owner.

Have high expectations at home. Encourage your child to complete their homework to a good standard. Homework is set on Google Classroom every Friday and expected to be completed by Tuesday.

Provide them with a quiet place to complete their work, support them and ensure they read every day.

Reading at HomePupils change their reading books at least every two weeks. We expect Year 4 pupils to read a variety of types of books or text types. This may include a chapter book which they may not finish in one sitting or a week. Books are now scanned out so that we can keep a record of what your child is reading. Books must be returned to school once they have been read. There are fines for missing or damaged books, so pupils must look after them. Books should be taken home in a book bag. The book bag should be brought to school every day with their reading book and reading record book. Pupils also have a mini-dictionary which they collect and record new, exciting words to share and use in their writing.

We want them to read at home every day for at least 20 minutes. We are keen for the children to progress in their reading, to do this they need to read aloud daily to an adult. We know our children CAN read fluently but they often struggle with comprehending questions. This means it is important for you to discuss the book with increasing depth through questioning them.Questions are effective because they:●Give children a purpose for reading●Focus children's attention on what they are to learn●Help children to think actively as they read

How can you support your child?

Each pupil needs to write a short comment in their reading record. Where possible, we would like you to also write comments to communicate with the teachers on how they are reading at home.

Times tablesAt the end of Year 4, all pupils are tested in their times table knowledge.Pupils in Year 4 must know ALL their times tables, including the division facts too.

Please make sure you are helping your child to learn their times tables through different games, songs and activities to help them remember.

All children have a logon for “Times Table Rockstars” so make sure they practise regularly.

Quick fire testing will also help with their rapid recall.

“Practice makes perfect!”

How can you support your child?

Remote LearningIn the event of a confirmed case, small groups of children or class bubbles may need to self-isolate. In these cases, children must continue to learn at home. Remote learning (Blended Learning) is essential and this will support children to access high quality education. The school is committed to teach children lessons via Zoom based on the units they would have learnt at school. These sessions will be 30-40 mins long. Tasks will be set linked to this on Google Classroom for the children to complete after the Zoom session. They will need to submit their completed work via Google Classroom which will be marked by teachers. You will be sent a schedule for Zoom sessions with passwords and usernames via Ping. We want you to be prepared so that is why we have shared this information. Children will need a notepad, pencil, electronic device (laptop) and a quiet place to complete their sessions.

Pupils are very confident in using electronic devices that link to the internet. However, pupils that are of a Primary age should NOT have their own account for social media. There are age restrictions of 13, 16 or 18 years old for different apps.

Please make sure that your child does not have an account of their own for apps such as:

However, if you choose to allow your child to use your own social media account, then this must be under adult supervision at all times.

Internet Safety

In Year 4, pupils join their letters to write using joined up handwriting. In school we use a scheme called ‘Penpals’. It is really important that pupils practice to write using a pencil, not only typing on a computer. Please practice letter formation to enable pupils to join their letters accurately.

Handwriting

If your child signs up for a club and receives a place, please ensure they understand that they have made a

commitment and need to attend all sessions.

Year 4 sports’ clubs are every Thursday before or after school.

Guitar lessons are after school every Wednesday.

After school clubs

Due to Covid restrictions, please make sure you line up at the Year 4 gate in a socially distanced manner, wearing a mask. Year 4 hometime starts at 3:00pm

If you are unable to collect your child after school, it is your responsibility to let the school know who will be coming to collect them. Remember, we cannot release your child to

an adult if we have not been informed prior to their collection. Due to Covid restrictions, please make sure this is someone from your household.

Only siblings who are in Year 9 or older may collect your child.Year 4 pupils must be collected before 3:15pm, before the Year 3 pupils leave so we can

keep the year groups separate. If you’re late and the gates have locked, your child will be taken to the KS1 hall to wait

with the Learning Mentors.
